I absolutely love Chicago. But it's certainly got it's problems. In addition to it's social issues. The summers are hot and sticky but short. And the winters are bitterly cold and longer than most would care for. Those beaches are great, but it's lake front fresh water beach, not the ocean.

I never run down Chicago. People who don't live in cities can't understand how one section of a city can be violent and it not affect the daily life of most of the folks in that city. The parts that are violent are the parts you never want to go to anyway.

The key is "major" city. LA is major but it does not have beaches right next to their downtown because their downtown it not next to the water. New York (Manhattan) simply does not have beaches until you get to Long Island and places like that. Miami does but Miami is not considered a world "Alpha City" according to the rankings, it does not have the economy Chicago has and its population is not close to Chicago's. Again, the same argument can be made regarding San Fran. Also I have never seen beach pictures adjacent to their downtown skyline. They may exists so if you have seen some go ahead and post them.
Like I said before, this is rare.

And don't get me wrong, like all major cities, there are problems with crime but what you don't hear about is how those problems are primarily isolated to 2 or 3 neighborhoods that anyone with half a brain can easily avoid.
Chicago has a metro area approaching 10 Million people and the metro land area is vast, you would really have to be looking for trouble to find yourself in those 2 or 3 neighborhoods that should be avoided.

Anyone who's interested in the architecture and layout of Chicago should check out the book Devil in The White City. It's actually about HH Holmes, the serial killer, who built a terrifying murder hotel with trap doors and secret passageways and the like, but each chapter flips with the story of the architect hired to assemble the city for the World Fair they had there in the early 20th century. That fountain and that whole park came out of that fair. And tons of the older architecture in the city he and his firm did and it's still there.
I've got a friend from there who's very well off, and he finances a ton of resturants there, and belongs to a bunch of different social clubs and stuff, and because of that I've gotten way more access to the city than I really have any right to.

I don't think this has anything to do with the man in the White House.
Chicago has been among the top three cities with the most murders since 1985. *
Cabrini-Green was a nationwide symbol of crime since the 1980's as well.
*It's also the third largest city in America, so you need to account for population when you calculate murder rates.
Metro area is not considered when crime rates in a city are calculated.

Good stuff. I have always been a big fan of Rio. Paris is another city that I really like. And most cities in Italy I am a big fan of as well.
There are many great cities across the world. I just thought it was time Chicago got some love. For people who have been to Chicago I have often heard it called "the best kept secret in the country." And really, Chicagoans tend to like it that way.
As someone who has a job that requires me to travel to just about every city in the United States, I tend to agree with them - it is a secret treasure. Sure I have a natural bias but I honestly believe that as far as summer cities go, I would take it #1. Just so soo much to do. I have not even started to touch on the neighborhood scene in Chicago... the pubs, dance clubs, live music spots, etc. Summers are crazy fun in Chicago.

I have often heard it said that Chicago has a European style to its downtown layout with the surrounding beaches. You typically only find it in Monaco and places like that. The only other somewhat big city in the US that I can think of that has this would be Miami -- again, without the size of Chicago and without the economy. And I have also heard it said that Miami's downtown layout resembles a European city as well. NY simply does not have this.

Yes, because it's not a recent reputation. (http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/26400030/yummy-sandifer-is-chicago-any-less-violent-since-his-murder) Chicago didn't become associated with violence since 2008. It's long standing reputation
It doesn't mean the repuation is accurate. Chicago has less than half the murders it had at its peak in the 1990's. Even the 'bad parts' of Chicago have way less crime than they used to.
For outsiders that kind of stuff take a long time to change.
I remember 15 years ago, business colleagues who came to NYC were shocked when my wife suggested they take the subway to a meeting downtown. They still thought they needed to be packing like Charles Bronson in Death Wish.
I just saw some idiot on Twitter spouting idiocy about Harlem in regards to the NYC Ebola case, not understanding what Harlem is about these days and why a white doctor would want to leave there.

Downtown is not Manhattan. Downtown is a neighborhood in Manhattan as is Inwood, Washington Heights and Chinatown. Downtown isn't even the big business district of Manhattan. The financial district and midtown are the big business districts.
Yes, there are no beaches on Manhattan, there's a lot of stuff to do on the waterfront, but no beaches. But something like 7 million of New York's 8.5 million people do not live in Manhattan, so most New Yorkers don't see this as a negative.

Again, the same argument can be made regarding San Fran. Also I have never seen beach pictures adjacent to their downtown skyline. They may exists so if you have seen some go ahead and post them.
Like I said before, this is rare.

New Yorkers never cease to amaze me. They ALWAYS feel like that they have to be #1 in EVERYTHING. Well, the world does not work that way. When people think of downtown New York, they think of Manhattan. Period. Where is the Empire State building located? Wall Street? etc.- all Manhattan. And New York/Manhattan does not have beaches built into it's downtown like Chicago does.
In Chicago, you can leave a Fortune 500 corporation in suit and tie and literally walk less than 100 yards to the beach. And beach goers can have fun at the beach and literally walk to downtown shopping and restaurants afterwards. There is no other major city in the United States that offers that except Miami which is a much smaller city than Chicago.

I am starting to think New Yorkers and their fanboys are a seriously insecure bunch. This was never meant to be NY vs. Chicago but somehow New Yorkers and their fanboys made it into that. To me, Chicago stands on its own. It does not need to be compared to anyone.
NY is cool with me though. I travel there all the time on business. I usually enjoy it when I go but do think it is a much dirtier city (trash everywhere) than Chicago... people are always amazed at how clean Chicago is considering it is such a large city... and I like the way that Chicago offers more diversity between Business, Beaches and Recreational Activities. New Yorkers never cease to amaze me. They ALWAYS feel like that they have to be #1 in EVERYTHING. Well, the world does not work that way.
You might have some reading comprehension problems, because nowhere in this thread did I compare New York to Chicago or claim to #1 in anything.
I was just correcting your mistaken notions of New York. You were claiming you have to go to Long Island to get to the beach.
I don't know how many New Yorkers are on this board, but I would guess at least 80 to 90% don't live in Manhattan. They still consider themselves New Yorkers
When people think of downtown New York, they think of Manhattan. Period. Where is the Empire State building located?
Yes, I agree. Outsiders often have an incorrect sense of what New York is.
Because the Empire State Building is in Manhattan, but it is not downtown. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_Manhattan)
New York is so dense it has two of the four biggest central business districts in the US. Midtown, where the Empire State Building is bigger than the downtown business district which is usually called Lower Manhattan or the Financial District where the World Trade Center and Wall street is. (Tons of Wall Street firms are now in Midtown these days.) Brooklyn has its own separate Downtown. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown#United_States)
This is where New Yorkers and tons of other commuters work. But it's not where New Yorkers hang out. Those areas are for tourists. I think for most cities downtown is where action is, but that is not the case in NYC.

Actually, the beach water is good. Tested by EPA every year and it passes. Now what you are saying USED TO BE true about 30 years ago... but they cracked down on industry that used to do that. Now any company polluting the water will be heavily fined and can even face imprisonment. Moreover, the beach scene is not always about swimming (although people do that all the time), it is more about girl watching, getting sun, socializing and mingling. Also there is a very large professional volleyball circuit that plays on our beaches during the summer.
Beaches run all along the coastline. Some sections have jogging paths next to the beach while others are simply beach. Here are a couple of pictures that kind of show what I am talking about. What these pictures don't show is just how far the beach system extends - it runs the entire coastline of Chicago.

And that column in no way provides any evidence that Chicago is more dangerous than Iraq. Last year Chicago had as many murders as it did in 1965. With 2.7 million people, Chicago's murder rate (which takes population into account) is lower than a bunch of cities and towns.

A heroic homeless man, stabbed after saving a Queens woman from a knife-wielding attacker, lay dying in a pool of blood for more than an hour as nearly 25 people indifferently strolled past him, a shocking surveillance video obtained by The Post reveals.
Some of the passers-by paused to stare at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax last Sunday morning and others leaned down to look at his face.
He had jumped to the aid of a woman attacked on 144th Street at 88th Road in Jamaica at 5:40 a.m., was stabbed several times in the chest and collapsed as he chased his assailant.

Chicago is the murder capitol of America. According to Chicago's own Chicago Tribune, Americans are less likely to be killed visiting in Baghdad than they are Chicago.

Everyone should avoid that place at all costs. It's a gang warzone. I'm sorry but photographs of city lights don't mean jack shit to outsiders when we all know you are likely to be stabbed to death just walking out to get a cup of coffee. No, it is not. In fact, Cleveland has a murder rate, as do many other cities. The sudden focus on crime in Chicago has everything to do with politics and the need to denigrate the president's home base.

Chicago is a great city, but why sell it as a great beach town? It would be like me selling LA as the epitome of high-rise living. It's pretty underestimated on that front actually: http://www.skylinescenes.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/losangeles/losangeles_skyline_006_4214.jpg

We got REAL beaches unlike Chicago, not dirty like NYC's.

New Haven is a great city. I'm there almost every weekend it seems. But it certainly is an example of a place where things don't get progressively worse. It's as if you go from a beautiful area to really bad in about one block. But if you know where you're going it's a great place. It does barely count as a city though compared to Cleveland or Baltimore.

I can tell you have never been anywhere. If you had traveled a little bit you would know that Chicago beaches run all along all 40 something miles of coastline - with some spots being deep beaches that are very wide and spacious while other spots are more cozy. It all depends on what you like and what type of scene you are looking for but it is all right there - you get to decide.
For example:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e244/contractsmart11/Chi229_zps58a8ce03.jpg (http://s40.photobucket.com/user/contractsmart11/media/Chi229_zps58a8ce03.jpg.html)
That ^ would obviously be a more cozy beach.
Another example:

2. With my girl it can be either North Ave, Oak Street or Foster depending upon the mood
3. To shoot hoops, Foster
4. To just chill it is either Foster or one of those semi-private, cozy tucked away beach spots

You don't know what the **** you're talking about.
And that column in no way provides any evidence that Chicago is more dangerous than Iraq. Last year Chicago had as many murders as it did in 1965. With 2.7 million people, Chicago's murder rate (which takes population into account) is lower than a bunch of cities and towns.
Would you same the things about Cleveland as you do Chicago above? Because unlike Chicago, Cleveland is one of the 10 most violent big cities in the US.
Good post Kevin:applause:
And I would just add that the land size of Chicago hardly takes into account the true size of the area in which we live. The metro population for the Chicagoland area approaches 10 million people. When crimes happen people don't just stop at the city border. City borders merge into suburbs in the blink of an eye. And suburban areas can look like the city and vice versa.
But as I said before, most of the crime in Chicago is relegated to 2 or 3 neighborhoods that are easy to avoid. You can live in Chicago and never once venture into the 2 or 3 sketchy neighborhoods. You pretty much have to be looking for trouble to find those neighborhoods.
For that matter almost every city in America (no matter the size) has a neighborhood or two...or three... that must be avoided.

[QUOTE=ThePhantomCreep]Chicago is a great city, but why sell it as a great beach town?
As you can see from the all the posts made by Chicagoans, it is not being sold as anything other than what it is -- an Alpha city with the best skyline and with all the hustle and bustle of super large city... but with the added touch of beach living. Boating, beach volleyball, hoops, jogging, hanging out with friends at the beach, mingling, socializing and relaxing at the beach are a part of the day to day life of Chicagoans. To simply post pictures of the skyline, great restaurants, shopping, and night clubs without mentioning the lakefront lifestyle that we enjoy is not giving a complete picture of our city life. Hitting the beach is a part of the culture of being a Chicagoan.
The fact that Chicago offers beach living at the size it is... with the skyline that it has... is rare. There is almost no other city in the world that offers that. Miami is close but it is too small and it does not have the economy or skyline that we have. Dubai (a manufactured city) is another one that comes to mind. That's it.
.

And you can see girls in bikinis at Central Park too.
Also after he practiced with Central Park, Olmstead went to create his masterpiece, Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
Yes, maybe, but it is not the norm in Central Park. And the girl may be looking at getting arrested. :lol
As for those other areas you are talking about, again, the beaches are not built into the downtown area. That is the difference. In Chicago you can be doing business downtown, walk out of a Fortune 500 company in suit and tie and be steps away from the beach. You can't do that in New York.

Hey KevinNYC ... check this out. You never see Chicago rip off New York. But for some reason New York likes to rip off Chicago. Since you brought up a comparison of cities, that must tell you something about which city is greater. When New York films New York/Gotham City for Batman, they don't film their own city... they film Chicago.

1) Weather
2) Crime, yes i know its more concentrated in the South
3) It offers nothing over NYC.
Chicago is basically a colder, smaller albeit cleaner and more affordable version of NYC.
The debate between the best cities in America is between NYC, LA and San Fran. Maybe Miami due to the beaches.
Chicago is a like a distant 4th or 5th but it is by far one of the only places worth visiting in the Midwest.

I'll give you a few good reason why it isn't"
Reasonable post although I disagree.
- New York - statistically rains more than Seattle. Rains all the time in New York. Dark and dreary plus it is overcrowded, trashy and rat infested.
- LA - too fake plus you have earthquakes and mud slides to worry about
- San Fran - I actually really enjoy this place although there are too many gays and it is smack in the middle of earthquake city. Also you will be surprised but it gets super cold there. Something about the cold in SF that goes right to the bones.
- Miami - too small and too damn humid
- In Chicago, first, crime is generally in 2 or 3 neighborhoods that are easy to avoid. Secondly, Chicago has a good mix of super crowded areas and areas where you can breathe. It also has the most parks out of any city in the US. Thirdly, some winters are mild while others can be cold. This last one was a beast. Just depends. But on average if you can put up with a little cold for no more than 1 to 2 months out of the year, you are golden. The other winter months are no biggie - just throw on an overcoat and you are good to go. And then summer hits and lookout! Best summer city in America by far.

Earthquakes? Mudslides?
Earthquakes worth waking up are extremely rare, mudslides? WTF this aint Guatemala or some shit.
I'd rather deal with a once in a decade earthquake than a killer ice storm that happens for entire months every year.
Oh.. and REAL beaches we're legendary for our beaches.
Venice, Redondo, Huntington, Malibu, Santa Monica, Manhattan, Hermosa etc.etc.etc.

Do you read WND?
Also googling Richard Burr, he told Nation Journal last month, he was running again. (http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics/rumors-aside-burr-says-he-ll-run-again-20140915)
That's 2016 election, which means Michelle would have to move out of the White House to establish residency in North Carolina with her husband still in DC? Does she take the kids? Seems a little far fetched
If you google "michelle obama senate (https://www.google.com/search? q=north+carolina+residency+requirements+senate&oq=north+carolina+residency+requirements+senate&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i64.16480j0j1&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8#q=michelle+obama+senate&safe=off&tbm=nws)", you see a lot of articles about her running for the Senate
In California
In 2018.
However, a lot of this is from a magazine that just started this month and it sounds like a good way to get a lot of publicity.
Burr isn't running. All you need to establish residency in NC is property. Obama will still be in office yes, for 2 whole months.

New York is not grey and dreary at all, unless you are comparing it to Phoenix and not Chicago. And New York has more clear days and more percentage of sun than Chicago. New York has 23 days more clear days than Chicago (http://www.currentresults.com/Weather/US/average-annual-sunshine-by-city.php)
New York has more rain than Seattle, but Seattle has more rainy days. Seattle can have weeks where every day you can a little bit of rain. New York has torrential downpours in the summer where it gets it rain out of the way quick. A town in Long Island got 13 inches in half a day earlier this year.

A city that rains as much as NYC does and snows 27 inches a year isn't a good look weather wise.
Notice that the other cities that rains a lot don't get a lot snow outside Cleveland and Buffalo New York

Without this rather intimidating (in a good way) building, Chicago would be down a few notches no question.
Nice pic! But you can't just focus on the Hancock. The Sears Tower (Willis Tower) was at one time the tallest building in the world. And it is every bit as imposing as the Hancock. Chicago has 4 of the top 7 tallest buildings in the United States.

One of the things I want to point out is that with every city, there are good and bad areas. Some worse than others and these things tend to run in cycles with some areas being down then getting gentrified and coming up while other areas that are better can go the opposite way by trending down some. The key is whether or not your city is responsive and seeks to address issues as they arise.
In this thread (besides Chicago), 5 cities continue to brought up as examples of great cities - New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and somewhat surprisingly, Denver.
Here is a look at the downside of each of those cities:

Your pics of the UK are nice. And agreed, there is a middle ground. But no, it has not been bragging
at all -- the big city way of life is not for everyone. More than anything, I don't know what it is exactly
-- maybe it is due to the fact that the current President of the United States calls Chicago home -- but
Chicago has gotten a bad rap lately so I felt it was time to reveal the true Chicago. Sure we have crime,
but we have a metro area approaching 10 million people. The crime you hear about encompasses a small
fraction of the population and it is generally isolated to 2 or 3 neighborhoods that are easily avoided.
Hell, you can go to a city with less than 50,000 people and they likely have 1 or 2 neighborhoods that
they try to avoid too.
I love Europe bro. And despite the friendly rivalry, I love just about every city in the United States too
-- with the lone possible exception being Cleveland :D

NYC is way better than Chicago is why.
Why is that? Because you say so? Look, I like NYC but my girl hates it. She hates the smog, the fact that it is very trashy, has rats as big as dogs, and the fact that it rains all the time. That's her and she won't change. On the other hand she loves Europe, love Chicago, loves San Diego, loves Phoenix and loves, oddly enough, Minneapolis. But that's her and she is entitled to love what she loves. I accept the fact that everyone won't like Chicago. Just like you should accept the fact that everyone won't like New York.

Miami definitely has its ghettos and its fair share of violence. The same for LA - same for CHI and any other city in America. Regarding LA, the riots were pointed out because nothing happens in a vacuum. Many of the same ills that plagued LA then still plague LA today - all you have to do is talk to people in those areas to know that what I am saying is true.

Probably because, like George Lucas, decades ago Chicago was an amazing and valuable part of our country, but now they produce nothing but misery and fat.
Dude you have been misinformed - believing media hype I see. Chicago has always been and will continue to be MAJOR in every way. Don't take my word it - look here:
According to this, Chicago is the 4th most economically powerful city in the WORLD!
http://www.citylab.com/work/2011/09/25-most-economically-powerful-cities-world/109/#slide4
And according to Wiki:
The city of Chicago has also been rated as having the most balanced economy in the United States, due to its high level of diversification.[139] Chicago was named the fourth most important business center in the world in the MasterCard Worldwide Centers of Commerce Index.[140] Additionally, the Chicago metropolitan area recorded the greatest number of new or expanded corporate facilities in the United States for six out of the seven years from 2001 to 2008.
Chicago is a major world financial center, with the second largest central business district in the United States.[citation needed] The city is the headquarters of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (the Seventh District of the Federal Reserve). The city is also home to major financial and futures exchanges, including the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (the "Merc"), which is owned, along with the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) by Chicago's CME Group. The CME Group, in addition, owns the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), the Commodities Exchange Inc. (COMEX) and the Dow Jones Indexes.[144] Perhaps due to the influence of the Chicago school of economics, the city also has markets trading unusual contracts such as emissions (on the Chicago Climate Exchange) and equity style indices (on the U.S. Futures Exchange). Chase Bank has its commercial and retail banking headquarters in Chicago's Chase Tower.[145]
CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE:

WORLD CONVENTION DESTINATION:
Chicago is a major world convention destination. The city's main convention center is McCormick Place. With its four interconnected buildings, it is the largest convention center in the nation and third largest in the world.[153] Chicago also ranks third in the U.S. (behind Las Vegas and Orlando) in number of conventions hosted annually.[154]
LEADER IN HIGHER EDUCATION:
Since the 1850s, Chicago has been a world center of higher education and research with several universities that are in the city proper or in the immediate environs. These institutions consistently rank among the top "National Universities" in the United States, as determined by U.S. News & World Report. Top universities in Chicago are: the University of Chicago; Northwestern University; Loyola University Chicago; Illinois Institute of Technology; DePaul University; and University of Illinois at Chicago.[220] Other notable schools include: Chicago State University; the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Illinois Institute of Art – Chicago; East–West University; National Louis University; North Park University; Northeastern Illinois University; Columbia College Chicago; Robert Morris University; Roosevelt University; Saint Xavier University; Rush University; and Shimer College.

NOooo.... of course not. All media hype for the negative right now because the man in the White House calls Chicago home. Well I am here to set the record straight. Chicagoans absolutely love our home... despite what the media would like for you to believe.

Found this the other day. Pretty cool article especially since New Yorkers have come out strong in making their case that they have the best city. No problem there... do what you do.:pimp: This article was somewhat revealing to me though because during the many times that I visited NY I always knew that it was kind of junky but I never knew exactly why... it never dawned on me that it could be because you guys don't have alleys.

CHICAGO vs. NEW YORK
Chicago vs. New York, The Windy City vs. The Big Apple, The City by the Lake vs. The City Bordering New Jersey. It’s no surprise that Chicago has had a chip on its shoulder since New Yorker writer A.J. Liebling deemed us the Second City, although taking travel advice from a man who looks like Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit is highly questionable. So, in honor of City Rivalry Week, here are 12 reasons why Chicago beats New York... 12 times out of 12.
1.Lake Michigan is RIGHT THERE - In a matter of minutes Chicagoans can walk from the heart of downtown to sun themselves on the sandy shores of a great lake. If you dropped a bag of diamonds into the Hudson River, it wouldn’t be worth it to dive in, lest you’re fine with spending your life under a chemical shower. And getting all the way to an actual beach is a public transit odyssey.

2. Money money money mooooney... MONEY! - From the beer you're drinking to the apartment you're stumbling home to after drinking said beer, everything's relatively affordable for a city of Chi's caliber. New York has a couple living in a 240sqft, $1500-a-month studio that potential tenants would KILL for.

Chicago hot dog >>>>>>> that boiled tube of rat dick you get from some dude's cart in NYC. I won't even brook a discussion on that.
Also, NYC's snobbery re: pizza is unfathomably misguided. A good thin slice is fantastic...but good Chicago deep dish has an unquestioned place in the Pantheon of Pizza.

Besides all the crime it's cool. Black people ruin everything.
Thats probably why, once again, Oregon was the #1 state people moved to this year.
The crime and gangs have been moving up from Cali since the 90s and it's been going down hill, thanks.
Stay away, go to Chicago!

Anyone expecting quality food from a $2 from a street cart? Regardless if you don't like it, well go to all of the hundreds of other street vendors (which are not available in Chicago)
Chicago is like the little brother jealous of New York's accomplishments and always throws fits b/c come no one pays attention to them.

Lol, you literally took pictures of NYC pre-Guliani from like the 70s to 90s when NYC was up there with Chicago and LA as being the most dangerous major cities. I think Chicago was the most dangerous major city all throughout the early 1990s followed by either LA or NYC most years.
