View Full Version : Do you feel superior to your IRL friends when it comes to NBA discussion?

I do. I feel as though I've reached another level of understanding of the NBA by posting on this forum. Collaborating and arguing with some of the finest NBA fan minds that is on offer. Whenever a friend brings up something about the NBA and makes a ridiculous statement, I quickly shut him down.

An example? A friend was telling me how Lebron was to blame for Miami's loss in the 2014 finals. I quickly countered his statement with statistics and examples from the games. I used my knowledge gained from threads on this site to my advantage and destroyed his argument in less than a minute.

I'd like to thank you all for helping contribute to growing my basketball encyclopedia.

Yes. Most people are just casual fans who bullshit their way through sports discussions, and regurgitate whatever storyline they heard on ESPN last week.

Most people have favorite players and just stick to defending them no matter what regardless of any facts or stats that are thrown at them. On the internet, though, most people have favorite players and just stick to defending them no matter what regardless of any facts or stats that are thrown at them.

Like some people debate me and I just put their shit to rest. I once debated some people about Larry Bird's Celtics and they said they never played Magic Johnson and said I didn't know what I was talking about. Then he said Allen Iverson was the best player of this era and better than Shaq.

Insane numbers. Lebron on that GOAT sauce. You could make a VERY strong argument that Lebron, not Leonard, should have won the FMVP.

:oldlol: no you couldn't if you actually watched the series. LeBron had little to no impact outside of the first two games. He played well offensively sure but it didn't mean much.

To the thread topic,
Yes almost always (casual fans). It's way different than being on here where I feel like a noob.

I feel superior in general to just about everyone, the exceptions being my father and my boss. I haven't surpassed them yet, in terms of basketball discussion, I am known as a borderline savant and have a very high reputation among my friends and family.

I knew there'd be some funny in this. So enough braggers here, but I have a question along the lines of talking about the difference between ish and real life.

Are there any other fan bases on ish that don't match up at all w ISH? I grew up w and am around real life nugs fans, but the disconnect between all real world nugs fans I know and the ish nuggets fans is night and day. I have taken a break from talking nugs on ish because I have no idea where the posters are coming from. During the Carmelo about to be traded times actual nugs fans I talked to where generally of similar opinions. But ish "nugs fans" had a completely different mindset

Does anyone else see a disconnect between their favorite team and the ish crowd about that team?

Pretty much this. I've only ever had two or three close friends who I could completely nerd out with when it came to sports. Plenty of others that are fun to just kick back and watch a game with, but they don't really give enough of a shit about the really in-depth stuff, or they just try to bullshit their way through convos with tired, generic ESPN headlines.

No, some of my friends are actually really knowledgable about basketball and talking to them makes me wonder if they actually post here

Collie
10-28-2014, 04:41 AM
Yeah I do actually. A lot of them are casual watchers who will follow certain players or teams. Most of them know the big things that happen (trades, injuries, etc.). I think I only know one guy who'd debate with me the finer points of winshares or how Tom Thibodeau's system changed how defenses work. And I don't think any of them would discuss with me why I think Bob Pettit should be ranked higher than Rick Barry.

I feel a bit lonely when it comes to basketball talk in general.

I don't visit this forum nearly as much as I used to. There are some that I enjoy reading, but they don't post that much, and are heavily outweighed by those that aren't worth reading. I guess I just don't have the time nor the patience I used to.

However, IRL it's hard to find someone to talk about basketball, let alone NBA. There used to be one good friend in the office I could discuss NBA, and now he went elsewhere... Stupid non-sports watching country (-_-)

And no, none of that makes me feel superior to anyone. That is stupid. Pretty sure other people have other topics they are much more educated in than any of us.

With most friends who follow the NBA, sometimes I do get the feeling of, "Okay, maybe I follow the league a little bit closer than they do" but often it's give & take. I'll have one friend my age who couldn't tell me a thing about Mark Price, but then he'll have thorough knowledge on upcoming draft classes all the way through 2018. Or I'll have a fellow coach who's quite a bit older than me so he gets and understands most classic NBA references, but he doesn't follow the game as closely as he used to. Sometimes I feel superior, sometimes not.

choppermagic
10-28-2014, 10:17 AM
I dont know if superior is the right word for me. Yes, i know more about a wider range of NBA topics and issues than the casual fan, but I always remember that the league is still entertainment and the casual fan is more in number and importance than the hardcore bball fans, sadly.

That means, if the public thinks, just for example, Lebron stunk up the 2014 Finals, yes, that is the perception that will flavour history and storylines.

stanlove1111
10-28-2014, 11:18 AM
Yes and I feel superior to almost anyone on this board when it comes to basketball. I rarely see a post that impresses at all, just simplistic juvivile posts that mostly show a clear lack of basketball IQ.

Yeah you know stats anyone can look at a stat book.

Prometheus

I have friends who follow the league more closely than I do, so I guess they have more tangible NBA knowledge.

But whenever a game is on, it doesn't matter whether I'm surrounded by friends or random shmucks at the bar, I can interpret and understand the game as I watch it better than any of them. People mostly just shut up and let me narrate/explain what's happening - and the game-callers usually end up echoing me.

Pretty much. A few of my coworkers have extensive knowledge (Laker/Clipper history) and keep up with all the headlines though.

Surprised you didn't just say....

" Titles are overrated anyways.....Looking at advanced stats LeBron had higher usage% and Per then TD and KL".....

- If that didn't work you could have used win shares.....next you could also show that Lou Williams is the best clutch player in the NBA because of advanced stats ( that would have really blew his mind)

- If you felt froggy you could have went all in and showed him that Kevin Love has had greater Per then Bill Russell and Moses Malone!!!!...heck K Love had better statistical seasons then Hakeem Olajuwon.

stats>bags of chips and drink.

there are only a handful of people I know in real life that can have intelligent cavs discussions with, but that will change as the cavs grow in popularity. Cleveland is a NFL city first and foremost. Anybody on the street can talk to you about the browns all day everyday, but especially with the way the cavs were the past 4 years it's not easy to find cavs superfans like myself on a regular basis.

Kind of. It's not about being on here though, moreso just the fact that I know that I actually watch the games (and for Finals games...i watch em multiple times) and therefore i know more than my friends who probably didn't even watch more than 3 games all year of whatever player they are trying to evaluate.
