the executives in that room are business people. they dont give a shit about rap music except the reason that it has a market and can sell. not sure why it is necessary to perform like an idiot in front of these people like they give a **** about the culture, and like your bringing some kind of unique performance art. It just shows that you are a retard and can be taken advantage of.

Interesting video. Makes me think. I'm not entirely sure what to make of it yet.
Reminds me of a discussion with my younger brother earlier this year. He has a real deep interest in hip-hop. He does not try to emulate any kind of life he does not lead, but we did discuss perception vs. reality.
Sometimes I think it's good to remember there's a big difference between who these performers present themselves to be vs. who we want them to be vs. who they are. I'm not sure how much it matters though. I suppose it's for the sake of reality and withholding misleading conclusions and generalizations about certain people, places, and things.

Reminds me of the Chappelle Show pixie sketch. The sketch that ultimately changed Dave's life.
He said, he he was dressed up as an old 1800's black man, and dancing and shucking, the laughs he heard from the white became totally different. They weren't laughing with him, they were laughing at him.

Yup, and if you look at who's got money on these prisons you will find people in government or other high ranking people. And the worst part is, private prisons are just like an apartment; you make money when it's full. And you make more money when capcity is overflowing and you build more. In order to do that they need to put more people in jail

All these slave and master references lose steam when you realize that the majority of people in the room are just staff workers who don't sign any checks or make any major decisions. Pretty much more expendable pawns to the company than Shmurda himself. Also, at least one of those execs, including others in the room were not all white.
You guys are characterizing the **** out of a room full of people just to catch feelings over some bullshit. Can someone explain to me why him performing one of his songs in front of the people he wants to sign him is seen as a bad thing?

The manner he performed in and the song he choose.

Would your opinion change if there were no white people in that room?
Why is what he doing here "cooning" different from what any artists does?
He was dancing and singing/rapping. Isnt that what he would do in a concert environment?
The comparisons to the mistral acts are somewhat unfair. its not like his act is promoting racist stereotypes of black people (eg mistrial acts that mocked the intelligence of black people). I guess maybe violence, but promoting violence is almost a staple of rap music.

A group of any people. Black, white, pink, whatever.
His act is promoting stereotypes, therefore he's cooning.
If he came in, and started to spit some Chuck D or KRS-1 flows about how the industry is using the likes of artist like Bobby Shmurda, than that would be awesome.

By your definition of being used, every industry uses everyone.
I am an auditor my firm uses me and my efforts for its benefit. They pay me a wage to do so.
whats the problem as long as its consensual and no one is being forced to do work against their will?
This shmurda guy must have commercial appeal. I dont get it personally but I dont get 99% of popular acts today. (eg. whats the appeal of bieber?)
He went into that room and tried to convince that record company to invest in promoting him.
What is this non-sense about record industry using black artists? are these artists not paid? Are they not working of their free will?
If you define that as being used, than everybody is being "used"
Record companies (and also other forms of media and any business) is concerned with only one thing, to be profitable and make as much profit as possible. They aren't trying to make great art or promote stereotypes. they just try to pump out what they think is popular.
His act is promoting stereotypes, therefore he's cooning.
What anti black stereotypes is his act/performance promoting? The only one i can see an argument for is the violence in his songs. But violence is promoted/glorified in a lot of rap music.

I think you know what I mean by being used. Homie is just following the dumb nigha that rap role. He ain't talking about nothing and they just gonna find another tool to do the same since je just went to prison.

So basically the only rappers that arent being used are the ones that rap about important issues/are socially conscious?
I mean whats the big difference in this guy shmurda's act and someone like little Wayne? Dont all musicians of all types at one time have to go in front of a record company and show their act?
Doesnt everyone have to treat the person that they get their income from with some level of deference? I know I do.

Wayne is a coon too. One of the biggest.
Some perform some don't.
The music industry just gives the people the music and acts they want though. Record companies would be fighting over the new KRS-One if that was what sold records.
Cooning is what the audience craves, cooning is what the audience receives. There is no conspiracy or deliberate ill will behind it.
