This game will literally get worse ratings than the irrelevant Saints-Panthers game tonight. What a joke.
Although I do find it amusing that LeBron is probably the 1st person in history to leave Cleveland for a period of time and then decide to go back. That just doesn't happen, for obvious reasons.

Rating will be up for sure though. And honestly, I wish he was right about what he said. It would be amazing if the NBA could draw that much interest.

It will be interesting to keep track of the ratings throughout the NBA season considering all the historical teams, Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, 76'ers, Pistons etc... are all expected to miss the playoffs this year.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if ratings are still respectable.

Irving will never be the player Wade was and Love can't play defense like Bosh. This isn't going to work out the way people think. Chemistry matters and this team has no shot in hell against the Spurs. I'm not even sure this team will beat Miami.

What's your point again? Lebron didn't say this was the biggest sporting event in America did he? I haven't watched the interview maybe he did but if he didn't then your post is irrelevant. When people are here saying NFL is more popular than NBA they can't just ignore the entire world and focus only on America. One is a global sport and the other is a domestic sport. NFL/American Football and it's athletes have no global appeal:oldlol:
The top of the NBA endorsement food chain is led by LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Both are global superstars who made $42 million and $34 million, respectively, last year from endorsement partners. James has been one of the NBA’s top endorsers since he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. His current partners include Nike, McDonald’s, Coca Cola, Samsung Electronics , Upper Deck, Audemars Piguet and Dunkin’ Donuts.
The four-time MVP is the NBA’s top endorser.
Five championships and 18 years of All-Star play transformed Bryant into the most popular player in China with a little help from his main backer, Nike. Bryant also has deals with Turkish Air, Lenovo, Hublot and Panini for merchandise.
The NBA’s top 10 endorsers pulled down $155 million last year by our count. It dwarfs the totals in baseball and football. MLB’ s 10 biggest endorsers earned less than $30 million off the field last year with only Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki (all in Japan) making more than $3 million from sponsors and merchandise. The NFL’s top 10 made $55 million from endorsements, led by Peyton Manning at $12 million in 2013. The NHL lags even further behind with the 10 biggest stars making $15 million cumulatively
.
“It’s gotta be the shoes,” Spike Lee told us 25 years ago, as his alter ego Mars Blackmon in a series of Nike commercials. And the gap between NBA players and others in team sports all starts with the shoes. The NBA’s biggest stars can command more than $10 million annually from Nike and Adidas . Nike represents almost half James’ off-court income, and James was the NBA’s leading shoe salesman in 2013 with $300 million in retail sales in the U.S. of his Nike signature shoes, according to research firm SportsOneSource. Rose signed a 13-year, $185 million contract with Adidas in 2012. A $1 million a year shoe deal is extremely rare for an NFL or MLB star. Basketball players move product unlike their counterparts in other sports.
Basketball players can also take advantage of the global nature of the sport. Bryant has made trips to China the past eight years for Nike and he is one of the brand’s main chips in its battle against Adidas in China. Bryant partnered with Turkish Airlines in 2010 and has been featured in commercials with global soccer star Lionel Messi. James’ Dunkin’ Donuts deal is for Asia only, and he entered into a new partnership with Chinese Internet services firm Tencent last year. These deals are not available to football and baseball players.

Who is the Most Popular Athlete in your State?
Athletes rank right among the biggest musicians and movie stars when it comes to fame. Michael Jordan, perhaps the greatest NBA player of all time, is one of the most recognizable figures on the face of the earth. With that in mind, which players are the most popular? Using Google search volume data from the last 12 months (April 2013 – April 2014), the chart above illustrates the most searched-for athletes in each of the 50 States.
LeBron James dominates the competition, showing up as the most searched athlete in 23/50 states. Next in line is Peyton Manning who claims seven states, then Adrian Peterson and Tom Brady who tie for 3rd with four states. Andrew Wiggins (two states) and Johnny Manziel (one state) are the only athletes to win at least one state despite technically not having made the transition to professional sports yet. Tiger Woods (one state) is the only athlete on the map who doesn’t play one of the “Big Four” North American sports. Below, the top ten most popular athletes overall.

Uh..that is due to basketball being a secondary sport with very few true fans. It is not in the top 5 of sports in America in terms of "favorite sport" and the vast majority of its fans only follow it in the offseason of their favorite sports. As a result they have no ties to a real team and migrate towards an athlete.
This is exactly why the NBA markets itself on players and not teams. The cities where basketball teams are located are either markets dominated by baseball or football. Therefore they attempt to familiarize fans with an athlete, someone they can relate to as opposed to an inanimate team.

Do you know why sports exist? Or television for that matter? To generate revenue which requires a particular viewing audience. And the viewing audience of interest do not include those that are destitute.

Uh..that is due to basketball being a secondary sport with very few true fans. It is not in the top 5 of sports in America in terms of "favorite sport" and the vast majority of its fans only follow it in the offseason of their favorite sports. As a result they have no ties to a real team and migrate towards an athlete.

.....
They market it based on players because it's a sport that relies on individual stars a lot more than other sports. Especially true under the NBA's current rule set that encourages flashy plays and high scoring. It's also a sport where players are clearly visible and don't wear helmets or anything obscuring the face

It is a sport that relies on individual stars because the sport itself cannot compete with baseball or football. Plane and simple. There is a reason the NBA was even more irrelevant before it started marketing its stars as the primary attraction, something that will never be done by the pure sports because it's rudimentary.

Ok let's play by your logic and flip the situation. I am going to exclude America from all the viewership ratings because you seem to think we can randomly pick and choose which people in the world matter. NFL now has no viewers it sucks!
Next point using your logic, NFL doesn't the same level of individually marketed players. Let's pull a random bullshit statement that fits my agenda to explain that. How about it's a bullshit sport that just requires big fat tough guys to run into each other thus it's so easy to play that all the players are brain dead imbeciles who are unmarketable to the mass public.
Wow it's easy to post on message boards when I just make up bullshit reasons for everything based on an ignorant and bigoted view on the world!

The popularity of sports is based ENTIRELY around money. If it can't generate money, it won't be broadcast, and therefore it will not reach each generation for interest. Imagine if televised basketball stopped making money tomorrow, its broadcast would cease shortly thereafter. That means no more NBA, no more FIBA, no more NCAA, etc. How many people would play basketball in 50 years?

You must not be very well versed in History. Pretty much every sport that goes back 100 years was played by amateurs and part time players back in the day. A lot of them used to throw benefit exhibition games to help pay for their retirements or get a part time job through teams sponsors.
If the NBA closed it's doors people would still be playing in their local leagues. People play sports even if they don't watch them. Basketball itself is a sport that has a huge number of people world wide who play it but wouldn't follow it. Sports don't only exist for money, big leagues maybe but not sports.

I'm not sure Kyrie and Love can carry Lebron the way Bosh and Wade did. They actually had Championship and Playoff experience before Lebron teamed up with them unlike Kyrie and Love. If Lebron wants to win a ring, he is going to have to be the sole leader of this team and I don't think he has what it takes. He is going to choke like he always does and there will be no one to step up for him when times get tough in the Playoffs.

I remember when two seasons ago the Heat get blown out by the Knicks, dude goes practice after the game with the media there, he gives this speech on how his team needs to get better, then couple weeks later when teams meet again, he and espn feed the revenge narrative and Heat get blown out again, it was hilarious... and the reason Knicks were victim of a massive ref job against the Pacers, because Knicks shitted all over the Heat regular season and the league was scared Lebron couldn't do it.
