View Full Version : Can money make you happy??

Absolutely.

People keep harping on about how money isnt everything. this is correct
But then people also say that money cant make you happy. well let me ask you a question: If i dropped 100 million dollar into your bank right now would you be happy??? if you never had that amount of money then the answer would be yes (or if your spiritual as hell then no).

But its not really money that can make you happy its more what money can offer you. see when i never ask people what they want in life because they either say something to avoid sounding materialistic or they say money (or a certain amount).

I usually ask people why do you want money (what would you do with it) and they say that so they can have more freedom and more time. and have whatever they want (material wise) and THAT is exactly what money offers.

Money free's you from the task that you are repeatedly doing everyday for no other reason but to try and get some more money. its called a job. while some jobs provide a sense of achievement and purpose for some people. the majority reason we all work is for money.

Count how many hours you would spend in a lifetime A LIFETIME that you are spending trying to get money. thats how important it is to you.

Money is freedom, with the right amount of money you can do what you WANT <-- keyword. not do what you have to do.

Will money bring you fufilment ?? no
Will money make you happy?? yes

Money can bring you a lot of the stuff humans need to be happy. But it can't bring you everything.

Money can bring you a lot of the stuff humans need to be happy. But it can't bring you everything.

But money can bring you a better quality of life and a better life for your children. It depends on who you give the money to, how good they are at managing it.

We're happy when things are going well in life. In this day of age, money is equivalent to success in many cases. If you live in a nice neighborhood and you can provide for your family, don't have to work long hours or multiple jobs to support your kids, you'd be a lot happier. That of course is just one scenario out of many others, but you get the point.

People bust their asses off at work just to get by. Imagine not having to do that and having all the free time in the world, pursuing your true interests and not having to worry about your financial situation.

You can do a lot of good with money as well....

Of course it isn't the end of all things. There are things money obviously can't buy you like health, true love and happiness. But if you know what you're doing, you can use it to your advantage to take care of your body(nutrition, working out with the help of the best trainers), improve your social status, etc...

Overall I agree with your statement, but I wanted to expand upon what you said.

Money won't make you happy long-term, but it will cure the extreme misery caused by not having any.

People who don't agree with money providing some semblance of happiness are extremely rich or extremely dumb.

need money for that upgrade huh? believe me, we love you as you are, you don't have to change.

I've never been of the impression that money flatly makes one happy forever. I've always compared it to unlocking the "all guns" or "infinite ammo" cheat in video games. Crazy awesome fun at first, but possibly subject to boredom and a yearning for more still.

I think a lot of us are living lives in a manner for which those of previous generations would have been in awe. Many jobs have never been easier (compared to jobs of yesteryear), cars have never been better, televisions clearer, computers quicker, and the world more accessible. Yet no matter how good we may actually seem to have it, many of us always seem to find a way to want more.

I have many thoughts on this matter - not all on point or totally fleshed out - but I'll try to keep this brief for the sake of readability. I read a Time article this year suggesting that money can buy some happiness, but mostly when it's purchasing experiences as opposed to products. Also, regards to those living in poverty, I think I read money, according to surveys, makes people happier up to around a family total of around $70,000, then it levels out (could be totally off on that). http://time.com/money/2802147/does-money-buy-happiness/

Anyway, here's a short interesting article written by a guy who claims to have made $15 million at a young age. It could be a fake response, but I feel his logic and reason may hold true just the same: http://www.businessinsider.com/i-made-15-million-before-i-was-30-and-being-rich-wasnt-as-awesome-as-youd-think-2014-7

Some excerpts:
Here's my answer: being rich is better than not being rich, but it's not nearly as good as you imagine it is.
The next thing you need to understand about money is this: all of the things you picture buying, they are only worthwhile to you because you cannot afford them (or have to work really hard to acquire them). Maybe you have your eye on a new Audi — once you can easily afford it, it just doesn't mean as much to you anymore.

Everything is relative, and you are more or less powerless to that. Yes, the first month you drive the Audi, or eat in a fancy restaurant, you really enjoy it. But then you sort of get used to it. And then you are looking towards the next thing, the next level up. And the problem is that you have reset your expectations, and everything below that level doesn't get you quite as excited anymore.
Most people hold the illusion that if only they had more money, their life would be better and they would be happier. Then they get rich, and that doesn't happen, and it can throw them into a serious life crisis.

If you're part of the middle class, you have just as many opportunities to do with your life what you want of it. If you're not happy now, you won't be happy because of money.

Whether you're rich or not, make your life what you want it to be, and don't use money as an excuse. Go out there, get involved, be active, pursue your passion, and make a difference.

I enjoy the comforts that money brings but the best things in my life, friends and family, were free.

I'd love to have enough money to not have to work for the rest of my life. I don't know how much that amount is. I'm not sure if anybody does.

I mean the richest man on the planet, Bill Gates, he still works. Oprah, one of the richest woman in world also still works. Steve Jobs worked until his death.

Money can bring happiness to what current problems and current goals you have but I think money will bring other problems to your life. More money equals more responsibilities, more people will depend on you. Whether it's the homies you grew up with(athletes and rappers) or the men and women in suits who work for you(corporate employees).
Biblical thought right there..."to whom much is given, much will be required"

Absolutely yes.

Rich people who are unhappy are unhappy for completely unrelated reasons that they conflate with being wealthy
poor people who are unhappy are often unhappy primarily because of financial struggles

It's the only thing that makes women happy.

Exactly this is why money can buy you love. People get all technical and say that girls dont love rich guys for them. But being rich is a part of them and it is what they are. Being rich isnt just having a tone of money if you look at the patterns and habits of the rich they're all very similar. And women love them for it and they love the lifestyle thats involved.

Rich or not family is family you'll always have them.

As for people having tonnes of money getting bored... well thats because their original purpose or goal has been achieved (lots of money) so alot of millionaires go to work but this time around its not for money its for purpose and fun. And thats what money can offer..... working for fun. Not for money. Thats why it can make you happy.

Money can help you be happy, but it is not a fix-all. There are certain holes it cannot fill, no matter how much of it you have, and no matter how many things you buy to try.

They don't(didn't) work, they do what they're most interested and invested in. That's why they got so much money in the first place. The combination of your hobby and demand for your hobby by the public generates alot of money.

I really believe all of your mentioned people and almost any genuine artist, musician, filmmaker, ... etc would still do the same if they only got enough for it to lead a simple life.

OT: Of course money can make you happy in a sense that it takes away the daily stress to get some for a living. If you're not settled in life, though, and suddenly you receive enough to "never work again" it will even get you more depressed. Your day consists of waking up eating taking a shit and questioning anybody entering your life, because you don't know if they're not only in it for the money. Your friends have to still work everyday or you give them some of your money 'till it's actually not enough to not work anymore.
