Was having a discussion with some friends about D-Schrempf, and they seem to have forgot how good he was. One guy said he was below average, another three said he was just average and the lat said he was above average.

One guy compared him to Tom Gugliotta and another to Keith Van Horn. I told them all y'all must be legally blind.

How good was he in the 90s' compared to his peers? Who were his peers? Who'd his closest comparison in today's league?

Schrempf was a beast! Good shooter and could handle the ball pretty well 6'10 and had a beast shot and could also post up smaller players

indeed.... and a 3-time all-star in 95', 97', and 98'.

40% 3-point shooter... could play shooting guard.

member of Seattle's big 3 (Kemp, Payton, Schrempf) that went to the Finals in 1996.

exactly. not only he was a good shooter but a good ballhandler as well.
he was never a franchise player, but he was everytime an important piece of the teams success.
unfortunatelly he is forgotten by most

Boris Diaw reminds me of Schrempf. Except that Detlef was more aggressive and better. He did a little bit of everything well. Good second/third option to have.

He was a very solid player, and you best not leave him alone at that 3 point line. At times Ray Allen reminds me of him, but Ray is a better player over-all.

It's been a while. That Sonic team was damn good.

I would say maybe Danilo Gallinari level. Shrempf was 3rd best player on an almost championship team.

He was Toni Kukoc before Toni Kukoc

He was really good. Versatile, skilled, and a solid defender. I remember him throwing down some pretty impressive dunks too.

I think he was better than Kukoc.

How good? Pretty good... 6'9 mobile forward with plenty of skill; dude was a pretty good overall shooter, he could handle and pass the rock, could post-up smaller players, rebounded at a good rate, decent defender...

Comparison in today's league? I'd say something like a mix between Danilo Gallinari, Boris Diaw or even Chandler Parsons (at their peak), and cleary overall better than any of them.
At his best, Detlef was capable of putting up something similar to 1990-1992 Larry Bird's stats.

he was the anti-lebron,one of those guys who played his game inside the team game and did not make everyone change for him. everyone games were maximized and his teammates were not taken out of their comfort zone.

yes. Schrempfs stats from 89-98 (his prime) in regular season and playoffs are really good.
his 92 season is amazing. 19 points, 6 assists, 10 reb a game. he had similar numbers over some years.

In his prime he would have been paid a max contract or near it if he played in today's league.

He was very consistent. His best year was the season he had before he was traded to Seattle in 1993 in which he was the best player on his team, averaging 19/10/6. Comparable Power Forwards that season were Larry Johnson and Danny Manning.

At his best, Detlef was the third best ALL AROUND SF in the world after Pippen and Hill in that early 90's era. And similar to Pippen, he was a very good scorer but not a true alpha dog. For many years, he was a top 10 SF in the L who would often swing to PF. And when u think about SF's who combined scoring, passing, and rebounding the best, he MIGHT have a case in the top 10-15 SF's of all time. I know that many won't agree but other than Bird, Bron, Barry, Hondo, Pippen, and Hill, who else FOR SURE would u rank over Det? At his peak he was gettin 19 points, 10 boards, and 6 dimes a game. I think Parsons is a good comparison, but Det was much more physical a player at this point.

just solid all around, built like a machine. the guy had no weaknesses.

he could shoot , drive, pass, rebound, defend, and do everything at nba level.

and he was efficient. if you were a coach, you didn't have to tell him, "hey detlef, we need 28 from you, so we're gonna run a lot of iso plays for you."

he played withing the flow, and he didn't need to go out of his way to get his, but he'd still end up giving you nice production by the end of the night, simply due to the fact he knew how to play and knew where to be at and he hustled and attacked the boards.

dude was a fine player.

LOL!! Well I am glad that you called them out on their BS. Being a Sonics fan and being in the Midwest, I had the pleasure of watching or hearing a lot of Pacers and Sonics games. Detlef was way better than Gugliotta and Keith Van Horn. To be honest, he is equal to Dirk Nowitzki, without as many shot attempts and shorter. His peer(s) would be Chris Mullins.

Detlef had great court vision. He could pass like Larry Bird. He had handles. He had great shooting form. He had great footwork. The dude was a beast. I can't believe someone would compare Detlef to Tom Googs or Keith Van Horn.:facepalm

I don't think they remembered the same Detlef I was talking about. They must remember him his last season with Portland.

Schrempf was so much fun back in the day. I especially loved watching him in Seattle.

Great all around player. Not a good defender, but not a liability on that end. He was really a guy who could do anything for a team, like an all-star caliber glue guy. The one who said Boris Diaw was kinda right, only if Diaw could also score.
