second, if there's anyone in the NBA who's more than just the sum of their numbers, it's duncan. his and pop's attitudes make that whole team work and make them the envy of the league in terms of a successful org.


what you should really be doing is turning your question inside out-- how could someone with the relatively modest numbers of tim duncan have such a huge positive impact on a team? especially compared to all the stats-heavy players who rarely make it out of the first round...

His PER and per 36 minutes have been relatively consistent through out his whole career. I hardly think "role player" when it comes to the impact he has on the game.

More importantly you should be asking why more coaches insist on riding the wheels off their superstars when this has served as a prime example of the value in managing your star players minutes going into the final 3rd of his career.

Duncan is a bit overrated here, but duncan maybe has the right to be overrated. dude made in combination with the goat coach the spurs to the most consistent nba team for over 15 years.

duncan is not the MAN anymore since 08, but its ok.
Duncan ist VERy important for the spurs, he is one of the most important pieces for the spurs team and still have important impact in spurs success.

nevertheless he doesnt have to carry the franchise anymoe since 07 like he did it the years before. his numbers are still great, but spurs are a system team, everyone contributes in many ways.
so duncan has the luxury knowing to have the best coach, best system and best team around him for stepping up in clutch situations.
he doesnt have the whole franchises succes on his back like DIRK for example. But that is nothing against Duncan (saying this before duncan stans are running amok)

duncans playing styl is so efficient, that he could play until 45 or so. he will always rebound well and will always be a thrill under the rim
