When did it first become pervasive?

Its not a problem.

If there were two leagues, a PED league and a non PED league, which would get more viewers?

Let them take whatever.

Don't get me wrong, not trying to make it an ethical issue. Just wondering when people think it became mainstream.

Late 90s make sense? There seemed to be a lot of "big"-ish players at that point that you wouldn't see in earlier eras.

Late 90's Jordan was using the shit. If you think baseball was the only one at the time then you are mistaken. Malone, D-Rob...

I would honestly say if they came on to the nba scene it was probably the 70s as with any of the other sports, steroids weren't even considered bad back then. And NBA already was having other illegal drug incidents, so why not steroids?, a simple not-yet-vilified-or-illegal performance enhancing substance?

The 80's. Similar to all the major sports.

PEDs are usually manufactured in Europe (advanced pharmaceutics) but they're only legal to consume in USA. So unlikely.

It's only american sports where they don't test for this shit, for the record.

Once a year is not that bad compared to Lebron who use it like it was candy.

I would guess it started in the late 70's and became rampant throughout the 80's. I remember reading about an International Track and Field event in '83 (?) when the IOC introduced a new steroid test and like 30 athletes dropped out of the event and another 20 or so tested positive.

Well, he'd been asked about use (of any kind) of drugs in a few interviews such as his interviews with Bob Costas and he states pretty clearly that he was not in favor of smoking/drinking/using drugs nor interested in using them, and he seems very honest/open about it. Considering when he talks about his vices he goes so far as to brag and exaggerate (20,000 women claim despite the aids epidemic making the topic a huge taboo, sucked his thumb til he was 14, etc) there's little reason to feel he lied about it.

That said, I think at least some NBA players and trainers could have been introduced to performance enhancing drugs in the 1970's before they were even widely known or considered bad. They were available at the time. Who knows if NBA players took them back in the 1970's but I can easily imagine just a "here take this to heal quicker/regain some strength" kind of thing, considered no more of a competitive edge in the athletes/trainers minds than a cortisone shot and some tape. Just like smoking, it wasn't until a few years of long-term studies being made known to the public that steroid use became something considered bad. Arnold has talked about how it was just a normal part of body building back in the 1970's for example, it wasn't tested for, it wasn't considered bad, it was just part of the times, at least for that specific competitive sport. I don't know if it was widely available or in use by NBA players back then or not, but it was in use by at least some athletes at the time.
