Across the board people are saying that most of the young players who are getting "max" contracts aren't worth the price. But actually is's opposite.

The 4 and 5 years contracts being signed now will got pretty deep into the new television deal the league is about to receive. With this new deal both players and team owners are in for a big pay day, we the customers generate this money in commercial value.

What it means is that both the cap and max contracts will increase by a sizeable amount, the moment that happens players in currenct contracts go up in value as their contract will be much closer to the league average than now.

It doesn't make sense for teams like Golden State not to retain Klay Thompson because you maybe have to pay a bit more than value for a short time, it will even out as soon as the new deal goes into effect.
Everyone in the league knows this, the agents, the players and the GMs. This is why you see so many players drive a hard bargain and still get their contracts in the end.
