"Missed shot" is such a negative way of thinking about it. I prefer the nomenclature from hockey or my own native football: "Shot on goal". This terminology is preferable because it is a positive (or, as you Americans say, "turn that frown upside-down!"). A "shot on goal" is a desired stat, for it indicates an opportunity for success that wouldn't otherwise be there.

Also, let's not forget how many of Kobe's "shots on goal" are thrown with such ferocity and inaccuracy that they ricochet off the stanchion into the waiting hands of his teammates, leading to an easy basket or (preferably) another attempt by the Bean. The self-proclaimed Kobe assist isn't named for the self-proclaimed Black Mamba for nothing!
