View Full Version : Why didn't Boston rebuild like the Spurs?

Instead of trading KG and PP and letting Ray Allen sign with the Heat why didn't they keep their core together and rebuild around them like the Spurs have done with Parker, Ginobili and Duncan?
They started to, it seemed with Jeff Green and Avery Bradley. Why didn't they try and add a decent C and rebuild their bench?
That summer in 2012 they could have kept Ray Allen and signed a C like Spencer Hawes and a SG like O.J. Mayo. Get a back up C like Nazr Mohammed.
Starting lineup:
C: Hawes
PF: KG
SF: Green
SG: Mayo
PG: Rondo
Bench:
C: Mohammed
PF: Bass
SF: Pierce
SG: Allen
PG: Bradley
They could have easily competed with a team like that.

What the Spurs have done is not what anyone would call a rebuild.

How? It's a complete rebuild around their big 3. Splitter, Leonard, Green, Mills, Diaw, Belinelli, Joseph.

They didn't let Allen walk, Allen signed with the Heat for less than what Boston offered.
No doubt Boston wanted to bring all three of them back and build around that core in the 13 and 14 season.

The only member of the Big 3 that is still starter quality is Pierce and he can't carry Ann offense Amy more. Ray Allen might not even play. Players get old.

Danny is on record saying that Pierce and Garnett were coming back and he put the Brooklyn trade to them, and they agreed to go.

Also Danny shipped Ray's a$$ out mid season but the trade fell through.
Danny wanted those carcasses out... and he was right to do so as they are all basically finished.

Maybe they knew KG was done?

They would've kept Pierce and KG if Rondo's ACL didn't tear. There was no shot for them without Rondo so they wanted to let them go after another ring, and get picks in the process.
Ray's a bitch though.
Plus it's impossible for them to build the way the Spurs did, because the Spurs didn't rebuild. They had their big 3, all in prime status at different times, and a strong system that could plug players into.

OP was talking about why they didn't keep Allen, Pierce and KG in 2013. They were looking for offers, but they definitely wanted to keep them all in 2013 to make a final run with Rondo. They made an offer for Allen, and Allen refused the offer to sign with Miami instead.
Even so, they signed Jason Terry in the offseason to replace Ray Allen.
It wasn't until Rondo blew his ACL in midseason did Ainge decide to ship Pierce and KG out to rebuild. Even so, he gave them one last run in the 2013 playoffs.

You should also ask why other teams don't rebuild like the Spurs or the Thunder.
