View Full Version : I honestly think peak Anthony Davis will be better than peak Kevin Garnett

Call me crazy all you want but I can definitely see Anthony Davis one day becoming a better overall player than peak KG. We're witnessing something special with Davis here. The kid is freaking 21 years old, which means he's far from entering his prime/peak years, and is already playing like an elite player. 7 games into the long year, and Davis is already averaging 25 pts/13 rebs/4 blks/2 stls/2 asts. That's ****ing disgusting.
When Garnett was 21, he averaged 18 pts/10 rebs/4 asts/2 blks/2 stls. Now I know the season is miles from over for Davis, but if he consistently plays like he has so far, then the sky is the limit for him. I'm even gonna go as far and say he has a chance to be a better player than Tim Duncan. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it'll definitely happen... I'm just saying there's a possibility. What he's done so far into his short career is beyond amazing. In the end, the dude is extremely talented and has unlimited potential. You can say he's overrated and hate him all you want, but you gotta respect his game. The Pelicans (Hornets at the the time) really won the jackpot by picking Anthony Davis. So excited to see what he'll be like in a couple years.

That's one thing I fear for Davis and every one of the good, young players. Really hope none of them suffer a major injury. The NBA is definitely less fun without the talented young guns.
not impossible but yall must have forgot how good KG was

I'll never forget how great KG was in 2004, his peak year. He could literally do it all. Score, pass, rebound, and he played some of the best defense I've ever seen any player play. The way Davis is playing right now really reminds me of how Garnett used to play. The only thing he doesn't have that KG had was his passing ability. Garnett at one point was averaging like 6 apg... Crazy number for a PF.

I highly doubt it but it's possible maybe even few more years down the road when Davis keeps improving his game while entering his prime years. The dude is a freak and a special talent you don't see very often, I love his game and mindset. Lets take a step back and wait until the season is over with first only been 7 games.

It's really not that crazy.
Hell I said he has a shot to surpass Duncan in terms of peak play, accolades/accomplishments/legacy aside.
He's outplayed KG age for age and season for season, every year since he's been in the league. If he follows a similar trajectory to KG's career, he could be around 7-8 years away from his peak..which is just scary considering where he's at right now. Considering how much room his game has to grow but still being so damn good.
Obviously he's not gonna sustain what he's doing right now, but if he settles in at something like 24/11/3/3/2 on 56-58% TS and the Pelicans are a 46-50 win team, at 21 years old...how ****ing good is he gonna be after 7-8 years of improvement?

I think barring major injury Davis will go down as an all-time great. The dude potential is off the charts and scary thing is he's only 21 years old how frightening is that.

If Davis wants to be better than peak Duncan/Garnett he needs to rely less on his teammates for baskets.
Other than that, he has a very good shot.

Kinda feeds into what I said above.
I don't think Point Guards like players with buck teeth demanding the ball.

Peak KG in my book is a top 3 PF of all time with Barkley and Duncan. And in general, KG is in the top 5 GOAT PF's. One thing that I think Davis has on KG is the fact that he controls the paint like an elite center on defense. As of now, Davis isn't the passer KG is though. I do think Davis is the closest thing to KG i've seen. And he also has a bit of Duncan in him for the way he can control the paint from the PF position.
In a sense, peak KG's secondary position was ACTUALLY as a big SF in my opinion. Davis's secondary position for me (especially in this era of the NBA) is center. Even though Davis could play and defend all three frontcourt positions and DOMINATE! KG and AD are on their own level in terms of their versatility and freak athletic ability for 7 footers!

Put it this way... We'll know if he's good as KG real soon. With the team he has right now, they should win 55 games as of next year. I think this Pelicans team is as good as anything the wolves put around KG... Actually I think it's better. That T Wolves team supporting cast... comparable to Lakers 05-06 surrounding Kobe. It was KG, Sam Cassell, and a bunch of scrubs and chuckers

I don't think teams have really tried that hard to game plan for Anthony Davis. For example if the Pelicans played the Spurs they would shut Anthony Davis down. He hasn't really dominated a team that focuses in on stopping him. Garnett actually carried the Wolves far in the playoffs.
I give prime KG more respect than Davis. Davis has to prove it in the playoffs. Remember, even Kevin Love had beast stats but never once made it to the playoffs.

ya, and teams aren't game planning for him? everyone knows he's the #1 option. everyone knows he's gonna get the ball. this isn't his rookie season. who are teams game planning for exactly when they face the pels?
it's almost scary how good he is. he's leading the league in rebounds and blocks (by a damn good margin on blocks and a decent margin on boards). oh ya, along with 2.5 steals per game. he's doing that while almost scoring 25 ppg. 21 years old. he's a monster.
he's going to win multiple MVPs and DPOYs in his career imo. he's so absolutely quick on the perimeter on both sides of the ball. he can close out like no other. i'd like to see him get a stepback J but it even isn't really critical at this point. his jumper and shooting mechanics of shooting so high are elite for his size. his post game continues to progress. the rest is just gravy, man. if he develops an elite post game, what do you do with him? double him? you'll see his assist #s leap. once he gets a post game, it's game over. you tell me how you guard him. foul him? oops, 81% FT shooter. he's a freak.
how do you do that bballreference thing? how many guys have scored 24>pts, 12>boards, 4>blocks and 2>steals in a season? i think those #s are actually pretty sustainable for him.
alright guys, i found it. i knew it would be elite company but damnnn. good luck, nba. players to average 24>pts, 12>boards, 4>blocks and 2>steals in a season:

I think the kid is up there easily. If his peak is 5 years away I think he will be the best PF ever. But I think a healthy Embiid is a Duncan/Hakeem hybrid (that's my analogy) with even a higher trajectory (hard to imagine what either peak will be - but their trajectories will probably be higher for now). The thing with both of them is that they will be doing their thing in a league that seemingly doesn't have guys that will be near the HOF. Remember DH was winning every DPOY award, block shots, rebounds that was in grasp and was too fast and too strong offensively for anybody to keep in front of them. So trajectories are always a hard figure.

KG was the best player in the nba ( or atleast arguably ) after what?
1995-96
1996-97
1997-98
1998-99
1999-00
2000-01
2001-02
2002-03
2003-04 ( MVP... finally argued as best player )
and he fell off a year later.
anthony davis
2012-13
2013-14
2014-15 ( MVP? ... already argued as best player.. averaging 25/13 with 4.4 blocks? )
hell f*cking yes anthony davis will be better than KG. hes already reached peak KG levels asside from less range and 2 less assists

One other thing about projections, Blake Griffin had a better ppg/rpg than the greatest PFs in his rookie year vs them at the same age. Blake went in reverse for two years, when better players joined the team.
