Nikka seriously calling out Kobe's mentality, after what he himself did in 2004? He was so damn horrible for us and if he played up to his usual standards, we're looking at a different Finals series..

Dude couldn't play under Phil Jackson...

This team is tanking on purpose. You seriously think that guys in that locker room expected this team to be a contender or something? Really?

Kobe's doing the Lakers a favor, he's shooting them to the top 3 pick in the draft. Appreciate greatness

He's right though. The Lakers are gonna suck regardless, but you cant say that Kobe is currently helping them. So do you wanna suck watching Kobe chuck or suck playing as a team. The latter will net you what 5-10 more wins of a lost season? Doesnt really matter.

Get that record Kobe.

I kind of agree with you. The Lakers will suck regardless, and that's where they want to be.

But Kobe's play means they'll need to re-do everything again next summer (assuming they get a good pick and sign a big name). They really should try running their designated offense whilst still sucking. It will make things easier in the future when they become competitive. :confusedshrug:

Kobe's obviously not playing winning basketball and has no trust in his new, shitty teammates.

But theres not a player in this league that could make LA a formidable team. This team is worse than his 2006 and 2007 teams.

So honestly, who cares?

If kobe played like he did for stretches in the second half of 2013.. 20ish ppg, 10 assists per game.. just looking to set people up and do everything outside of scoring at a higher level.. what would LA be? 2-6? Maybe 3-5 at best? What would they finish the season at? 30 wins absolute max? In a conference with

Spurs
Rockets
Warriors
Clippers
Grizzlies
Mavs
Blazers
Thunder

And then to a lesser extent up and comers with dominating bigs

Pelicans
Kings

and even the suns who just missed the playoffs last year...

Who is LA better than? You could add lebron james to this team and theyd have no chance at making the playoffs. So, honestly what does winning matter given these circumstances?

LA needs to lose as much as they can to make sure they keep their draft pick this year. If they go 30 wins and fall out of top 5 draft order? They lose their pick and become the hawks of the west floating in mediocrity.

Most of the team will be cut after this season, so running the designated offense will not do anything for us. Randle's out anyways, so it's not like we have a lottery pick to develop right now.

When Young comes back, the chucking fest will be a tad bit more entertaining

Wrong, it was Luke Walton who won Game 2 for the Lakers. Lakers would have gotten swept.

Kobe hit the shot to get it to OT and Kobe sealed it in OT, dropped 33/4/7 on 52% shooting

Walton played what, 27 minutes?

Who came through, when it mattered the most? Kobe.

They were getting their asses stomp little after halftime. Guess who stopped the bleeding? Luke Walton.

Without Walton, Lakers don't go to overtime and get blown out like every elimination game Kobe's been in.

payton's right. kobe's attitude this season is atrocious. he's playing for a losing team, he knows it, and he's playing like it. he'll get his stats at 80% which is reasonable coming off surgery, he'll ride his teammates with one part motivation and one part intimidation alienating himself from them in the process, and he'll go down as quickly or slowly as the ship does... but with a giant paycheck in his pocket.

what payton doesn't explain is how/why he can get away with this. but the answers obvious. it's because massive support has been invested in him by diehards. the ownership, the city, the fan base, the entire basketball world will go to bat for this guy no matter what he does. past laker players have learned that you don't compete with kobe for the spotlight in l.a. it's not a good idea... least of all because even guys who weren't actively seeking the spotlight have been burned (pau is the case in point)

the only groups that aren't going to bat for him are a) fans who don't care his attitude/style of play and b) media programming/pundits who see an opportunity to build up a heel for their 24 hour soap opera nonsense

none of this takes much away from kobe btw. he still makes a huge impact on the floor; and its not just his scoring.

what demonstrably took away from kobe was the contract he signed last season that ruined his team's cap space for the next two years. because once he signed that, it was easy to predict what this season would bring... exactly what we're seeing. and if management knows its going to lose, but still wants to fill seats and excite the city, it only makes sense to fill the roster with scoring and acquire marketable assets (jeremy lin, nick young).

kobe made a clear decision to lose ball games by taking that contract. and now he's topping it off with an understandably shitty attitude.

and don't give me any "the city owed him" or "he could have demanded more elsewhere" or "hes worth that much on merch alone"..

kobe could have taken less like dirk. he could have negotiated something still reasonable but not excessive. he chose not to.

he seems really angry on the court, in the press, all the time. i dunno if he's putting on a charade or if he's actually pissed off about his circumstances. either way i have no pity since he made his own bed.
