I love when people say the move was unnecessary
like the windmill or 360 dunk isn't a sick play cause you didn't need to do that action in order to score.

It was unnecessary because he had a lay up, and then changed his lay up to shoot a lay up on the other side.
Nobody was defending him. There was no basketball reason to do it.
If someone was on a fast break and did a windmill, then stopped mid swing, and switched hands and shot a lay up, nobody would claim it was spectacular and everyone would question WTF he did that.

Jordan thought the big man was going up to attempt a block. That's why he switched hands.
In hindsight, it might have been unnecessary, but he wasn't really doing it for show.

There's no reason to do a windmill at all though if we're simply judging things by what makes "basketball sense" and not taking the artistry of the game into account. Why do a windmill when you could just lay it up? No one is defending on a fastbreak. What's the point? You could just lay it up. :confusedshrug:

The move was aesthetically pleasing, like a dunk can be if done with grace. He went up with the idea that even if he gets contested he will pull the under hand switch and finish with the off hand. The move also has a degree of difficulty to it and requires the proper hang time to accomplish. This was the cherry on the top of an already dominant performance, and he was pumped with adrenaline ready to accomplish the impossible.

This is why I laughed when somebody tried to make a thread on ISH a while back that Jordan was the most "movement efficient player ever" - "no wasted movements"
:lol
He's the antithesis of. Guy wound up on dunks, changed uncontested shots in mid-air dribbled between his legs and pump faked 2 and 3 extra times sometimes just for the fans... he was a great showman. Great showman are the antithesis of not wasting movements, they deliberately ADD unnecessary dramatic movements, just to get a crowd reaction/tv ratings/etc
Movement efficiency is Tim Duncan or Oscar Robertson. Simple moves. For points, not for fans.

Don't forget: LeBron James
Lebron does get theatric from time to time and did so especially he was younger. Just the action of cocking back on a dunk, isn't really necessary. Let alone some of his chest pounds and roars following them. Though he seems to be a bit less theatric with his finishes than Jordan. Part of that is body control though, he's so big he doesn't have the body control to do some of Jordan's finishes even if he'd wanted to.

Firstly, its not really that hard to pull off. Anybody half athletic can do it. Not at rim level, but if you cant pull off changing hands to shoot a lay up on the other side of the basket, then you're either fat or you dont know what youre talking about.
The rest of your post after 'with the off hand' had absolutely nothing to do with why it was unnecessary. You then go on to talk about the game and his performance, which again, has nothing to do with his shot.
Clearly, you cant understand because you either cant read or cant relate a thought with a relevant reply.
Point being, it was unnecessary.
As per the bolded part, he wasn't contested, at all, by anyone, and did it anyway. Thats what makes it unnecessary.

And it was all about the moment- NBA finals against Magic and the Lakers, he had just made 12 consecutive FGs and this was the capper. Plus, he explained here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7vsjOHq5E0) why he switched hands. He saw Perkins react like he was about to contest it, while in mid air he made a move to counter that but Perk seemed to have given up once he saw Jordan take off, probably didn't want to end up on a poster.

Come on now. I'm sure he was cognizant of the fact that people were watching and wanted to put on a show for them. You think Wilt in his 100 point game made sure all of his movements were purely for basketball reasons? Legend has it he f*cked 10 women on the court during that game while scoring buckets at the same time.
It is a spectator sport after all, but the majority of Jordan's movements were efficient (thus his high on court efficiency) and done to beat defenders/defenses. If they were aesthetically pleasing, even better.

Exactly. Artistry and efficiency don't have to be mutually exclusive. If it looks good but still goes in the basket at a high clip, more power to the player

Well, you're right his moves are simple up and unders and reverse pivots etc... a dream shake for example is just a sequence of several extremely basic fundamental skills all players are taught. He just had quick reaction time, a generally quick body considering his size, and was fluid for his size. So it all came together and looked great when he was at his best. Look at regular game break downs of him playing though and you'll see, all his career highlight moves are not the way he always played, he usually kept it simpler than that. Most of the time he was just like any other center, simple catch the pass in the post look to see if another man is open in the lane or on the wing to shoot and if not, simple quick drop step and soft hook or layup attempt, or fade-away jumper. He did not bust out a slick series of up and unders and pivot combos we call the dream shake often - the David Robinson sequence for example, does not appear to be part of his game to game repertoire as far as I can tell.
And some of his dream shake combos did have a little extra something on them, though I'm not sure if his aim was to please fans as much as it was to gain tactical edge. Some of his more dramatic spins and up and unders I've watched were borderline, or blatant travel violations when viewed in slow motion (such as aforementioned David Robinson fake). I believe he was acutely aware of his body to the degree that I think he would probe refs pushing the envelope with some of his moves, not unlike Shaq was pushing the envelope with his elbows shoulder dips and other would-be offensive fouls. If you've got a natural gift at something see what the refs will let you do with it. Just like with AI's crossover dribble (once a carry) that seems to be the way the league works, and how some rules gradually change or get re-interpreted over time.

Let's see you do that move in a game. I don't expect you to get as high as MJ did. Shouldn't be too hard to do specially for someone with "half athleticism".
Couple of things:
You need to attack from the center with a right handed dunk or layup.
Then while going down switch the ball to your left and make a lefthanded layup off the backboard.
And you need to make it. All this in the flow of a real game. Pickup is fine.

I grew up being forced to use both hands, as should any decent ball player. Dribble with both hands. Shoot either handed. Pass with either hand. The fact that he shot a left handed or right handed lay up should make no difference.
I don't know why you find it so amazing.
Granted I never dunked in a game, or even tried, but its not like you need to hang in the air that long to change hands.

lebron takes the most time of possession to get his points and assists of any all-time great that isn't a point guard.
based on time of possession, he's one of the least efficient players of all time - time of possession isn't given any attention by the main stream right now, but it probably will some day soon.
the spurs defeated miami because they scored so much easier and the heat couldn't keep pace - this was due to the fact that everyone on the spurs had low time of possession other than their PG tony parker... whereas for the heat, lebron, chalmers AND wade all had high time of possessions, which was also a primary factor in the underutilization of bosh.

Cavs, check out Bernard King. Here he scores sixty points and he only pump faked once. Only dribbled more than twice, once (pretty sure). He lead the league in scoring (more than 32ppg) and had many games like this. He was in a separate universe. He would go quicker and still score 50 if McHale was on him, and go stronger if Dominique was on him, a minor tweak but the same game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-U86VQSFHc

When we're talking about top-caliber players all time, showboating or adding a bit of flair to your game or a particular play = / = effectiveness. To players in the class we're talking about effectiveness comes first and is priority number one. Ones who indulge the fans have already gotten to the spot they want to be in the game first (in a position to win). Even Wilt and Kareem would wind up or do something extra from time to time. But not at the expense of the game. Jordan's hand-change layup in the OP for example, was his 13th field goal in a row... the Bulls were up with a good margin. It really wasn't a crucial play.
And yeah, a lot of good keeping their game simple did (regardless of their position to win) for Timmy and Oscar let's all pretend to be unimpressed at them in light of almighty Jordan because we all know they never came close

If Oscar was that good shooting layups and just making the right pass it's amazing to think how many more MVP's he could have won if he tried to tomahawk dunk and dribble between his legs in blow outs or on fast breaks "like-Mike". Is that the point you wanted to make?

There is not a single player in the league who can make that layup exactly as-is (take off from the same distance with no gather step, same extension with the right hand before switching to the left, and landing in the same spot). No one. Only maybe one or two players of the last DECADE could have even ATTEMPTED to replicate it.

what you said is completely ridiculous - jordan didn't do any extra movements "just for the fans"...
even the switch-hands shot was an instinctive move he made in the moment.
certainly, he doesn't throw in an extra pump fake or put it through his legs extra for the fans - you have no clue what you are talking about and sound ridiculous saying that he'd throw in an extra pump fake for the fans... that's just dumb.
also, oscar robertson was the most ball-dominant player of all-time... good thing he was a point-guard so he at least was justified somewhat in his ball-domination - but in reality, no one took more time of possession to get his points and assists than oscar.
NO ONE wasted more time with the ball than oscar.

certainly, he doesn't throw in an extra pump fake or put it through his legs extra for the fans - you have no clue what you are talking about and sound ridiculous saying that he'd throw in an extra pump fake for the fans... that's just dumb.
also, oscar robertson was the most ball-dominant player of all-time... good thing he was a point-guard so he at least was justified somewhat in his ball-domination - but in reality, no one took more time of possession to get his points and assists than oscar.
NO ONE wasted more time with the ball than oscar.
um... how do you know?
can you prove it?

i just watched highlights from this game..they reconfirmed what i originally believed - defenses on average were highly mediocre.
http://gifsforum.com/images_new/gif/other/grand/layup-546b9345d2b6c.gif
for example in the above *gif, there is nobody even contesting jordan at the 3pt line - but that isnt whats deplorable - look at as his drive to basket which is met with NO resistance or or rim protection. SMH.
a) he passes on an open 3, with no defender in sight
b) no resistance at the hoop - free reign to do whatever (hence "the move" - which was completely unnecessary i might add).

Who cares why he did it?
So even if it was unnecessary, only shows how dominant he was. It's like a big "f*ck yo defense. Im fina do some unnecessary shit just because I wanna style on you bitch ass muhgughas"
To the doofus saying it's easy.
Not too many people can begin to palm the ball like he did first of all. Once you eliminate the number of people that can even palm the ball like him, then you have to narrow down the list of people that have his instincts, after that you need to narrow down the list to people that are athletic enough to even pull that off.
Yes it's doable, but not as easy as some people make it seem. It isn't the motion itself that's the issue, it's palming the ball combined with the motion and the distance. But what's forgotten here is the 'hang time' needed to jump from where he did, read the defense, react switch the ball and lay it in.
Yes, doable by a select elite (handful).
And like others pointed out, it has to be taken within 'context' to fully appreciate it. MJ's had a number of better moves.
Don't know if you've ever heard the account from MJ but he said he thought Perkins was going to jump to contest it, so he switched hands........So it wasn't unnecessary......I also can't believe this went 4 pages without somebody mentioning this......
Also not surprised to see a thread full of Jordan haters/Lebron stans......Whats new......

It would look so dumb if he missed, but if it worked out then you just enjoy it. 360's on the break aren't necessary either. Hell a layup or a simple tomahawk would be quicker, but it sure is fun to watch.
Not saying everyone needs to go out of their way to try fancy shit, but when it happens and it's amazing... just enjoy it for what it is.

indeed...
"Cliff threw it back to me, and i saw a clear lane to the basket, so i was going to dunk the ball... i exposed the ball, but then i saw long-armed Sam Perkins there, and uh, it was just instincts to change it... i changed it to my left hand, and was able to get it off."

3ball not going for the bait
Today's defensive 3 seconds rules prevents players from camping in the lane - today, a paint defender must be within "armslength" of an opponent to stay in the lane.. http://www.nba.com/nba101/misunderstood_0708.html
The original rule from 1982 was different, and ALLOWED paint-camping: (http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html)
1981-82
"Defender on post player is allowed in defensive three-second area (A post player is any player adjacent to paint)".
So just by substituting the rule's own parenthetical reference, the rule translates EXACTLY to: "Defender on player adjacent to the paint is allowed in defensive 3 second area."
.

in this clip, Klay Thompson's dad (#43 in the middle of lane) would get a tech after 3 seconds in today's game because his man is out of "armslength".... but back then, he was legal because his man was "adjacent to the paint", which is all that was required at the time - notice how there is no need for Thompson to tippy-toe in and out of the paint.
in previous eras, guys didn't have to worry about staying out of the lane or tippy-toeing - the 3 seconds rule was very simple back then: as long as their man was "adjacent to the paint", defenders could stay in the lane... so usually, they could camp in the lane for the entire possession because the paint is huge, and "adjacent to the paint" covers a ton of ground... Furthermore, "adjacent to the paint" could mean right next to the paint, a few feet outside the paint, or all the way out to the 3-point line - defenders routinely camped in the paint while their man was behind the 3-point line (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10695139&postcount=1).
contrastingly, today's rule makes sure defenders can physically touch their man to stay in the lane, by requiring defenders be within "armslength" of an opponent - since players that are outside, or "adjacent to the paint", are out of armslength to defenders inside the paint, players in today's game are not allowed to stay in the lane if their man is outside the paint.
