Hakeem had a nice one IIRC, Cousins has a good stroke on his hooks as well, Sky Hook though is a different story.

Kobe's hook shot is one of the greatest among guards, imo.

Magic has to be up there, too.

McHale could throw the jump hook over either shoulder as good as anyone. A little like how Duncan uses the jump hook.

Karl Towns through in a really sweet sweeping sort of old school mini-sky hook last night for Kentucky. Like a much smoother version of the one Dwight hurls at the rim every once in a while, which I'm sure he learned from Ewing, because Ewing used to use a similar face up, one bounce, two long stride prance that he'd jump off of, and just sort of throw it at the rim.

Shaq? Either hand over either shoulder, could use the glass and could do it from quite far and from difficult angles

Shaq's baby hook wasn't bad and Bird too.

thats nice, I wish more players could use it and look that smooth. Wonder why the move is not taught and mastered by todays players.

This is why Kobe's the GOAT. Last night he put up 2 excellent hook shots which causes people to talk about it.

This thread is prime example of how influential Kobe is.

Sabonis, but he had pretty much every move anyways.

McHale is the first one who comes to mind. Jerry Lucas gets points for the longest consistently accurate jump shot.

Nobody comes close to Kareem, though. I can't for the life of me figure out why no modern 7-footer has perfected that same shot.

It's not just about practice the talent must be there as well, Kareem has a knack for finding the rim.

McHale is a good choice. Yao had a mean hook shot too.

Lanier was the first to come to mind. Sabonis also had a good hook shot that he could use from decent distances.
Many 40's and 50's guys used some kind of hook shot, including even guards like Bob Cousy. George Mikan was using the hook pretty often.

George Zidek had one of the most legit go-to hook shots I've seen in my lifetime. I mean that in terms of - it was a fuller, sweeping hook (as opposed to a Dwight Howard jumphook push side shot) and his hook tendency was very high. He wanted to unleash the hook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jOzZFSY_G4

I'm not sure I've seen anyone use it in the same effective manner since Zidek. Jump hooks, yes. But those sweeping legitimate hooks? Tough to think of many who relied upon it like he did, not just one-offs.

This is true. McHale's entire post game, which is often considered among the best of all time, was really just a random sequence of about five moves. The hooks, the drop step, the turn around, the inside turnaround. That's about it. He could just use them in sequence incredibly quickly. His famed up and under was just a string of the turnaround into a step through.

He also had incredibly long arms, and I don't think that accounted for how weirdly high his shoulders were. So he could get shots off more quickly than it seemed possible. And he had a real knack for creating contact. He almost slid along defenders when shooting those jump hooks.

He's a fascinating player to watch. One of my favorites.

Kareem's the clear #1 but I can't name a clear #2... There's Lanier, McHale, Hakeem, Mikan, Shaq, Sabonis, Lucas, Walton, Duncan so on... I'd probably say Lanier and McHale are the next best two.

As far as perimeter players you got Magic, Bird, Dantley, Maravich, Kobe, Westphal...

Pau hook after fake spin is one of the most beautiful moves i've ever seen, and deserves a mention.

In the game today, I'd give Al Jefferson the nod for his right hook over the left shoulder. He's so right dominant that you know it's coming every time, but if he gets good position and you don't bring a double, it's going in 9 times out of 10

Although he never made much of an NBA impact and was limited offensively, the Croatian Stojan Vrankovic often used a high release hook, among the most famous in Europe.

Russell also had a pretty decent left-handed hook, some (ignorant) people say he couldn't even do a layup though :confusedshrug:
