EDIT: i should mention for the sake for full disclosure, since this thread is intended to point out that the united states is thought to be the world's greatest threat, that the same study also found the united states to be the most desirable country to live in. i don't consider this paradoxical, on the contrary it's actually not entirely surprising. but these facts together explain that the world isn't afraid of AMERICA. it's afraid of AMERICAN POLICY. two very different things, and the average joe, such as those of whom were presumably included in this poll, isn't incapable of making the distinction.


i've seen this graphic before, perhaps others have too, but i thought it was worth posting. i have no info on methodology so take the whole thing with a grain of salt. nevertheless extremely interesting results.

a few observations

a) that indians and afghans both consider pakistan most dangerous is no surprise (and their large populations help account for the 8% total figure)

b) that japan and parts of southeast asia both see china as their gravest threat is also not a shocker

c) that americans and canadians chose iran again is pretty conventional

d) that the french are still scared shitless of the germans....

e) but that australia, spain, mexico, brazil, indonesia, argentina, south africa, turkey, ukraine, germany, china, finland... among others... all regard the united states of america as the most dangerous threat to world peace?

Obviously the country with the biggest gun is going to be considered the biggest threat. Countries like Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, etc. may be considered volatile threats... but let's be honest, the U.S. would crush these Nations in a global conflict.

The only real threats to world peace are The United States and China.

Well, the more powerful the country, the bigger the threat to the world as a whole, so makes sense. Places like Somalia may not be peaceful, but they aren't powerful enough to be a threat to the world.

I'd take Somali pirates over ISIS any day of the week. ISIS is all about traveling through sandy, dusty roads on jeeps waving flags and shit. Somali's be getting on the boats and going into deep waters to get yo ass. Nothing to lose mentality.

Not that surprising. The United States has a stronger military than probably the rest of the world combined. Of course other countries are going to be a wary. Even ISIS is a regionally based group. Only the United States has the ability to mobilize its forces to anywhere in the world within a few days

Iran has one of the most activist foreign policies in the world. Whether you feel it's justified or not, Switzerland they ain't.


Iran is currently at war in at least Iraq and Syria, deeply involved through proxies in Afghanistan and Lebanon and has sponsored terror attacks all over the world including Thailand, Nigeria, Kenya, India, Saudi Arabia and Washington DC.

I am too lazy to find stuff that contradicts this but I do find some of this surprising.
I am surprised Pakistan doesnt consider india their greatest threat. I guess our drone striking and special forces violating their boarder explains it.

This is not surprising to me. China imo is correctly viewed as a threat. the chinese of declared areas of the south china sea their own Air Defense Identification Zone (East China Sea).

The East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (abbreviated ADIZ) is an Air Defense Identification Zone covering most of the East China Sea where the People's Republic of China announced that it was introducing new air traffic restrictions in November 2013. The area consists of the airspace from about, and including, the Japanese controlled Senkaku Islands (which are known as the Diaoyu Islands in mainland China and are claimed by mainland China as well as Taiwan) north to South Korean-claimed Socotra Rock (known as Suyan Jiao in China). About half of the area overlaps with a Japanese ADIZ, while also overlapping to a small extent with the South Korean and Taiwanese ADIZ. When introduced the Chinese initiative was controversial as requirements were imposed that other countries with air defense identification zones do not impose[1] and it included contested maritime areas.[2] Critics said the move escalated the Diaoyu Islands territorial dispute between China and Japan.[3][4]


The U.S. said it would ignore the Chinese ADIZ and disregard Chinese orders, although the Obama administration differed from Japan and South Korea in deciding to advise American commercial airlines to comply with China’s demands out of fear of an unintended confrontation.[57] A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman complimented the U.S. decision on airlines saying "The submission of flight plans to the competent Chinese authorities by airlines of relevant countries including the US shows their constructive attitude and cooperative will..."[58] The Wall Street Journal on 1 December reported that "the U.S. carriers are filing flight plans with both Japan and China. At the same time, affected routes are being modified to avoid disputed airspace as much as practicable."[59]

A U.S. State Department statement called China's establishment of the zone a "unilateral action [that] constitutes an attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea," adding that "Freedom of overflight and other internationally lawful uses of sea and airspace are essential to prosperity, stability, and security in the Pacific. We don't support efforts by any State to apply its ADIZ procedures to foreign aircraft not intending to enter its national airspace. The United States does not apply its ADIZ procedures to foreign aircraft not intending to enter U.S. national airspace. We urge China not to implement its threat to take action against aircraft that do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing."[60]

United States defense secretary Chuck Hagel declared that the Chinese announcement “will not in any way change how the United States conducts military operations in the region.” He also reiterated the official stance that the US would support Japan in the event of a war with China over the Senkaku islands. [61]

The United States sent two B-52 bombers from Guam to fly through the zone on 26 November.[62] Although a Pentagon spokesperson claimed that "the planes had not been observed or contacted by Chinese aircraft",[63] the Chinese government claimed to have monitored the U.S. flight,[64] saying that while it took no other action in this case,[4] it "has the capability to exercise effective control over the relevant airspace."[65][66] The Chinese Defense Ministry also said that with respect to enforcing the zone, its military would take "corresponding action in accordance with the situation and the level of threat".[67]

On 29 November 2013, the U.S. Department of State issued a statement titled "China's Declared ADIZ - Guidance for U.S. Air Carriers" that the U.S. government generally expects that U.S. carriers operating internationally will operate consistent with NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) issued by foreign countries but also stressed that this does not mean U.S. government acceptance of China's ADIZ requirements.[68]

On 4 December 2013, American vice president Joe Biden discussed the issue at length with Chinese president Xi Jinping.
