9 times out of 10 the award is going to a big man (10 times out of 10 it should go to him).

Should there have been an award just for wing defenders? If so, who would've won the most?

thabo sefalosha
Jimmy Butler
Lebron James
Russell Westbrook

Some names that would have definitely be considered.

its funny how the DPOTY is biased towards big men and tim duncan never won the award. hes obviously not as great as OP thinks he is

but to answer your question... yes. it weighs blocks/rebounds way too heavily

theres more to defense than catching a ball off the rim or getting 1 or 2 blocks out of 20 shots

defense 95% of the time has nothing to do with stats

It's not biased towards big men. If the award is explicitly based on contextualizing defense per position, then yes, it would be (Tony Allen was better at guarding wings than Noah was at defending bigs/anchoring the defense). Problem is the award doesn't do that. It's for the player who impacts the defense most, meaning it should always be a big man (unless you're really stupid enough to think a guy guarding his man on the wing has anywhere near the value of what Wallace/Robinson/Hakeem/Russell/Duncan/Walton did).

So no, it's not biased towards big men. And it's not about rebounds or blocks either. I say this whilst caring 0% about either of those things (unless done rightly, which maybe only 2 or 3 players in the NBA do).

The one and only exception would be for someone like World Peace or AK47. Guys who could guard 4 positions and supply incredible help defense...whilst also making their teammates better/covering their asses. And it would have to be a weak big man year defensively for them to win it.

Duncan stays living rent free.

What's ironic is 6 of the first 7 winners of the award were perimeter players, but since '92 the only perimeter players to win DPOY are Payton in '96 and Artest in '04

Of course you 'stopped' reading there...because my follow-up is inarguable.

You probably think Kobe had a bigger defensive impact than Shaq during the 3-peat. :oldlol:

Lebron would add to his legacy with this.

kenneth avoiding direct questions like the plague...that's usually what people do when they have no basis for what they're saying. :oldlol:

-Rips award for being biased
-Uses Kobe's All-D selections to prove a point

:biggums:

i didnt mention kobe once in this thread

but since you brought him up

kobes 1st team all defensive selections > tim duncans

and thats with kobe only being able to make G/G

while duncan can be voted F/F/C

:lol

Two things: Duncan has never made the All-D team as a C.

So by your logic, Kobe is the greatest defensive player ever, yes or no?

No, it shouldn't. The award isn't "biased" towards big men, it's just a fact that big men usually impact the game defensively more than small ones. It's like saying that discussions on the game's best shooter or dribbler are biased towards small men or that dunking contests are biased towards smalls.
It's not even as if, had this award existed, people wouldn't correctly have been pointing out that the X guard "award-pads", since there would be no way he'd have won it, say, 5 times, had the award been all player inclusive, like in the older days.

Btw, what would happen to a 6'9 player who would be able to play both forward positions and loves individual accolades (like most NBA players do)? Would he stick to being a SF so that this boosts his chances of winning DPOY's?

i know. but tims made the all nba as a center cause hes a F/C... his votes count towards each position for some reason. which makes no sense

and no. kobes peak defense isnt nearly as good as others.

but as far as guards.. hes the GOAT longevity/overall career on ball defender
