It actually came from some guy in the comment section of an article, but the idea is that for players who've been with a certain team for x amount of years, be it 10, 12, whatever the case would be, basically allow them to receive a portion of salary that doesnt count against the cap.

Obviously guys like Duncan and Dirk take discounts to continue competing, but they end up sacrificing a significant amount of money despite having huge impacts on team revenue. On the other hand if a guy like Kobe goes for all he can get as someone who does generate huge profits for the organization, he ends up being criticized and also handicaps the team, making it difficult to compete.

So should players whove been the face of their team for a long time be able to eventually receive a portion of their salary off the salary cap books? Im trying to think of any potential drawbacks and Im curious if anyone out there knows any.

I think that is a pretty good idea, and also rewards players who stay with one team their whole career. Maybe OKC has a better chance to keep Durant if he knows, in 5 more years, he can receive millions more from them off the cap.

Drawbacks, well, it basically helps the rich get richer. The Lakers could have their cake and eat it too. Overpay a bunch of free agents while Kobes salary stays at 20 million or whatever it would be. The cap is no longer a deterrent for certain teams, while it remains so for others. Kind of an easy mode for certain teams, an unequal playing field.

Overall I think it is a good idea.

Seeing the Lakers spiral downward into completely irrelevance is great. They've had enough success and are not entitled to more.

In with the new, out with the old.

also people who have a lot of endorsements like LeBron should count for more money against the salary cap in case they decide to take a "pay cut" to team up with say idk, 2 other all-stars.

Lakers, much like any professional sports team in NYC, will never be irrelevant.

With a bigger salary cap coming soon, they'll probably be contending for a title in the 2016 season.
