NBC Chicago news article (http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Teen-With-Cancer-Claims-He-Was-Fired-For-Needing-Time-Off-for-Surgery-283562931.html)

[quote]A 19-year-old delivery driver diagnosed with cancer claims he was fired from his job at a suburban Chicago restaurant when he informed his employer he needed to take six weeks off work for surgery.
Jonathan Larson was diagnosed with cancer of the brain and spine. He has had several rounds of radiation and now needs back surgery, he said.
The surgery would require him to take time off of his job as a delivery driver at Naperville

The guy makes it sound like they were pricks about it and if thats the case that aint cool.

But as far as letting him go, what are they supposed to do? Hes not some executive with in-demand skills, or a long tenured employee, with a mortgage and a family to support. Hes a 19 year old delivery driver. Is it seriously a big deal that a restaurant had to let him go and replace him with someone else if he cant work for six weeks? Dude can get a hundred similar jobs as soon as hes able to work again.

This is a story designed to make bleeding hearts and moral elitists feign indignance from a soapbox. The shit isnt really a big deal. Its a delivery job. Good luck to the kid with his treatment tho.

All he did was request time off. They could have kept him as an employee and not pay him. They could just give him his job back after he got done with the surgery. Most jobs have this thing called "medical leave."

It seems to me that this employer was being a dick about the situation, I mean the dude has cancer. How much more of a reason do you need for medical leave?

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if a lawyer gets in this guys ear and he tries to sue the restaurant.

Modern America, ladies and gentlemen.

The Boomers need us to pay their pensions. But if one of us has intractable cancer we should be fired.
