View Full Version : Wilt on Conan O'Brien. He's a giant.

Conan O'Brien's a tall guy, over the years he has had many NBA players come on his show and they generally don't look that big next to him. According to google Conan is about 6-4 and that is likely an honest height unlike NBA list info which according to draftexpress would make him the approximate height of most NBA shooting guards.

Talk about presence in the room holy shit. The top of Conan's head doesn't even come up to Wilt's shoulders ... even Scottie Pippen only looked a smidge taller than Conan, and Kobe looked virtually the same height as Conan. Even they would be straight dwarfed by Wilt. Also... Wilt's hands :wtf:

Wilt also talks about playing against Shaq, playing with Michael Jordan, and how his era differed from the current era and how Shaq and Jordan's games would have had needed to adapt with such differences.

babyshaq, look at Shaq now, that dude is huge. Dude's are way bigger in their 30s-40s than they are 20. He's taller than Shaq tho, sure.

I think it's funny how Shaq became an old man tho. Just like at some point he was chirping gaddammit out of the side of his mouth during games. And now he continues to be an old ass man.

I wouldn't have expected it to go down like that.

Edit: lol Wilt is funny tho in that vid.

Kareem: "I wasn't a 300lb giant in the middle like Wilt"

And here's another angle from that same event:
http://i45.tinypic.com/2dqttet.jpg

Kareem was tall, about a half inch taller than Wilt. But Wilt was a giant and immensely wide and strong, not just tall.

All I got from this is that every player says the same thing every time (the Conan interview) - "yeah sure he's good now but if he was playing against the guys I played against, he wouldn't be so good" - players of the 90's say that about today, players of the 70's said that about them, and I'm sure if players in the 50's were interviewed as often, would say that about the 70's. End of the day they're all egocentric and think their generation was the greatest.

Well, generally speaking it's true.

Think about it. Players of a specific time played under specific rules. Players playing a game say, 20 or 30 years removed from that time play a game with slightly different rules, trends, etc and if they were transported back in time as far as past players are concerned would have to adjust those habits to play "their" different version of the game. Any player 20 or 30 years removed from an era or more would need to adjust no LESS if you put them back in time vs forward in time. There are quite a good number of players that could adjust with ease, but adjustments would be necessary particularly by players taking advantage of certain era-specific rules or patterns to be certain. Wilt points out that the center game and some of the terrible opposition in the 90's allowed for more bullying (see Shaq's dunk/push over Chris Dudley). Wilt is saying that stuff would not fly in his era... at least not against him with his immense size and strength that Shaq, to that point in time, had never even encountered before. And he's probably right. He's just as right about how Jordan played and how everyone would have viewed it differently in his own time, everyone from coaches to fans to the players themselves.

Cavs, I appreciate all you've done to bring to light highlights of Wilt and other legends. However, is this thread really needed? Did anyone really think Wilt didn't dwarf Conan, or Kobe, or Pippen, or Barkely? He's 7'1" and probably about 300 pounds or more on that show with Conan. We get it; Wilt was one of the biggest players of all time. It's not really that controversial. The only high caliber centers that I can think of who were clearly "bigger" than Wilt are prime Shaq and Yao Ming. The former being clearly heavier and bulkier, and the latter being clearly taller and/or heavier. But Wilt was a physical beast, we all get that.

this weekend there were like 40 threads on Bryant. Granted he's still in the league but how many of them were needed?
There's more fun in this thread with sir charles and Walton and Kareem and Wooden than in all those Kobe threads combined - he's even in this one too

Don't get me wrong, I love the Wilt debates and posts regarding all the legends. Very astute points made; although I dislike how both old school fans and modern game fans disparage players from both eras.

However... I would make the same point if someone posted the same thing about Shaq. Wow, look how Shaq dwarfs Karl Malone or Jordan, or Lebron. Really? Is that earthshattering or tell us anything we didn't already know? It's not that I really dislike this thread; I just wouldn't want it to be used to somehow assert that this "proves" how great Wilt is, just the mere fact that he's a lot bigger than most everyone else. Same thing with Shaq. Both those guys feasted on and dominated their competition; but both proved to have their weaknesses too, just like any other player.

I agree that it's not a really useful topic, other than that it shows a Wilt video (so, it still has some value in it), but this board is so full of useless topics that have been done to death or "prove" something that doesn't really need any proof (e.g, wait till the next dominant LeBron performance and someone will probably use that as a "proof" that LeBron is still dominant) that it makes little sense that someone should bother about a similar "no shit?" thread, but dedicated to an old-timer.

People make threads about players interviews/appearances, heck people make threads about journalist tweets or their own random opinions on here, this is a new-to-YouTube Wilt interview. Thread worthy. I merely commented on his size because it immediately stood out, even to me a guy who has tirelessly researched the topic so that there would one day be a point where it was common knowledge (believe me ..it wasn't always common knowledge.) To me Wilt still looks impressive to see in comparison to others rather than just reflected as a number. Disagree? Okay, but this interview is still thread worthy.

Oh this interview is brand new to Youtube? Didn't realize that. I retract my statement with an apology. :) Definitely threadworthy. Still, it's hard to believe that anyone really didn't know how big Wilt was, it's pretty obvious in any picture you see of him in his prime to retired years. He doesn't look as big in his early years imo, because even though he was tall, he was rail-thin. Hard to believe he could put on so much muscle mass looking at his early years.

Actually just did a recheck.. (basing on Conan both instances)

http://i.imgur.com/a3d0fhA.jpg

Kobe and Barkley are virtually the same height. Indistinguishable really.

But Kobe's eye level is a tad bit higher, while Barkley has a bigger upper dome.
Barkley, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant are all imperceptably the same height.

Michael Jordan measured 6-4 and 7/8ths without shoes for 1992 Olympics

Charles Barkley measured 6-4 and 5/8ths without shoes for 1992 Olympics and has further verified in an interview with Chick Hearn when prompted about his 6-6 height that he is actually "about 6-4 and 3/4"

Kobe Bryant in an interview in 2008 described that his wife had him stand against the wall and measured his height without shoes, and he too was 6-4 and 3/4

And in pictures all three tend to look the same height as one another.

Also, 6-4 and 3/4 was the height of Oscar Robertson without shoes. So 6-4 and 3/4 seems to be a good basketball height for great all-around abilities. Conan looks a little bit shorter than Kobe and Chuck, but not much so he might be 6-4 and some change as well.

Arnold is only about 6' tall. His height was always reported at about 6'2" when he was an actor and then later when he was running for office and began appreaing in public more often, people noticed that he was nowhere near his purported height of 6'2". A friend of mine worked on True Lies with him and told me this 20 years ago. He's reported to be anywhere between 5'10" and 6'2" but there is no way he's 6'2". So he is a jacked child compared to them. He's somewhere around Jameer Nelson's height which is 5'11.5" no shoes. I only use Jameer as a reference because he's a basketball player and I know his actual height because I know him and we are the exact same height. I know his barefoot height only because his wife and I were talking about it and how neither of us are really six feet tall and we both always wanted to be six feet. Anyway you can read about Arnold's height here.
