View Full Version : So who started the pendulum/rub dribble style?

Can this be traced to a single player, or was it more of an osmotic thing?
I know keeping the hand on top was strictly enforced but what about swinging the ball out wide ala Allen Iverson but still keeping your hand on top or to the side of the ball?

Technically that isn't palming as the player is using the momentum of the bounce to suspend when the ball hits the floor.

So would they call discontinued dribble, or was it the sort of thing that was so revolutionary refs wouldn't even know what to do?

Kind of like it took a while for them to catch on to AI.

It's been a common dribbling drill since at least the 60s.

I seriously doubt it. Swag dribbles were not apart of their cultural...at least nothing remotely close to it being "common"

I've seen KJ do it some. I'm totally guessing someone like Michael Sugar Richardson was the first.

Tiny Archibald probably... Big O did something similar.

Phil Chenier, Archie Clark, Isiah Thomas, Dwayne Washington, Sleepy Floyd...

Random street ballers in the big cities back in the day (NY,Philly,Chicago).

Huh? So all this stuff that I see from the old guys on here saying players in 60's having to keep their hand on top of the ball in that pit pat style isn't true?

How come I see no one dribbling like this from 60's/70's footage if they were drilling like that?

Because they didn't. The 60's era was weak as shit

Jerry West was called for palming on that. He just got on the side of the ball. Called like that Derrick Rose has 15 turnovers a game.

That angle looks like a legit carry. You can see the ball going upwards as he crosses.

No it isn't. Modern player's handles are much smoother and more coordinated then whatever the f*ck that was.

They aren't more coordinated and smoother, it's an evolution. Plenty of those players like West et al would be able to do moves that are commonplace today but just didn't exist yet. That doesn't mean they were uncoordinated it just means that no one had done things like that yet. So with each passing generation there will be new developments. It's like saying that players now are incapable of being good shooters. No they aren't but developing their jumper isn't really part of what goes on with younger players.

Isaiah Thomas was the first to really rock it hard and have the BBall camps go crazy about it. Kevin Johnson brought it to the next generation. Shamgod took it to a whole different level from there.

I noticed in the Wilt films that he hardly ever took more than a dribbless step before his release. It would look cumbersome today.

what the hell

are we looking at the same gif

they called a palm because he DID palm BLATANTLY that would get called in any era. You're likening that to the typical dribbling style of today's player :biggums: .

So in your mind

this: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img716/4164/03fi.gif

is equivalent to this?:

Jesus Christ, ok so I can cross you and other rambling old dude Lazzeruss off the list of people I can listen too regarding previous eras.

Who said it was equivalent? Look at it full speed:

Now look at this :

Rondo, rose, Kidd and others got away with those super carries so often people stopped even looking for it to be called.

Its not an issue of if West carried or not...the issue is...if he carried what are these guys doing? Especially on the break. Guys do more egregious shit than West did there every game...

Dudes just get under the ball and run with it. Watching old footage...the number of carries called on normal plays...I cant see Jerry getting away with shit like that.

Rose is my favorite player...but hes seen him cup the ball 3-4 times straight standing in place. Grant Hill did it too.

There was an NBA commercial years ago showing Grant slow motion spin the ball in his palm before dribbling....he dribbled....picked it up and spun it a bit hand under the ball....turned it back over and kept going.

Nobody cared. You just couldnt do things like that back in the day. Not a then vs now...quality issue.

Just a....watching how those games are called vs ours...thing.
