View Full Version : Report says Wizards willing to offer Beal a 5yr Max extension

Hey Yo
11-27-2014, 10:49 AM
"As league executives believe in Beal’s ability to command a maximum salary extension, the Wizards have made clear around the NBA that they’ll do whatever necessary to secure Beal’s long-term deal."

"Beal, 21, is already one of the NBA’s top shooting guards. As important as his ability is, his age puts his value on a whole other level. There just isn’t anyone at Beal’s position who nears his combination of production and potential.

Think about what James Harden was doing four years ago and Klay Thompson three years ago, when they were Beal’s age. Beal is on a special track, and his value is magnified by the relative dearth of quality shooting guards league-wide.

However, Beal will be eligible next summer for a contract extension that begins in 2016-17 – the first season of the new national TV contracts. Based on salary-cap projections, a max extension for Beal would pay more than $118 million over five years.

If the Wizards are truly willing to give him a max extension next summer – when they’ll know the 2015-16 cap will skyrocket, but won’t know exactly how high – they’ll be showing quite a bit of faith in Beal. Understandably"

he will have earned it too

a couple years back when derozan, curry and conley got paid, people said it was too much, and those guys are all earning their money.

He's not worth $118mil over 5 years sorry. I see no argument for it either.

Max for Beal isn't going to be that much. That's the Melo supermax.

So he's going to get paid more than John Wall?

Rookie max deal well worth it.

I really like him and think that he will get it and earn it. He doesn't deserve it yet but I think that he's a guy with a lot of upside and a guy like him is valuable to a team. While I don't see him as a superstar player, I feel like he will be one of those guys who anyone would want on their team. I mean shit, bums like Bledsoe and Parsons and Gordon are getting ridiculous contracts, this guy will be better than any of those clowns. Lookout for Washington. They somehow have managed to assemble a good team and even that awful coach Whitman has grown into a decent coach. And hell, Otto Porter even started to play well, or at least show signs of life as a player.

I'm all for any player getting their money regardless. The only caveat is that my team doesnt do these mistakes.

IMHO he isnt worth the Max though. Elite players should get max deals.

Read the OP...

Beal is not worth that money AT ALL

the argument is so silly though...

think of how many young players have had great early years and then translated into irrelevancy
That is totally true although luckily for Beal he can shoot which is usually the thing that is lacking from players' games.

Otto who? :lol
hahha no seriously, he played well in summer league and has actually been contributing this year. I'm serious. I mean when you average 2ppg your rookie year, the only way is up but he's actually looking like he can become a decent player.

Their trying to lock him up before the new tv deal. There's going to be alot of threads for current free agents with people saying so and so is overpaid but it will make sense down the road.

Whats the hurry?Let him become a rfa, or at least let him prove he is more than just an average 2. Same story with Wall. Didn't like that deal either.

Grunfeld is such a wimp in contact "negotiations". He is like, take our money please. How this clown still has a job his beyond me.

beal is a top 10 2 guard. I wouldn't call him an average 2 or average player.

I do agree with your post though. Let him prove himself to be a max player first.

Can he shoot? His career field goal percentage says otherwise...

I mean he's worth about $12-$13 million a year, but no more. Crazy that some of these guys are getting paid so much.

Haha yes it does but he can. He shot 40% from 3 last year. He's a skinny young guy learning where and when to get his shots off. Nash who was one of the best shooters to play the game, didn't exactly set the world in fire with his fg% his first few years either but everyone knew he could shoot. So yes, I get what you're saying but I think that you will only see his % go up.

Last year among 2s beal ranked:

21st in PER
54th in TS
32nd in rebound rate
36th in assist rate

he averaged only 2.6 foul shots in 35 minutes.

What is the rush to give this guy a max deal? Grunfeld is a b!tch.

He seems really overrated to me. Like a Kevin Martin player with injuries, but with far less efficiency. Don't get his hype.
