Has it ever been explained why changing your email is such a long process?

Normally on other boards similar to this one, when you get a new email address you just change it and that's it. On here once you change it you have to wait for your account to be activated again which can take 3 weeks lol

So I see no reason right now why I would have another email anytime soon but was just wondering has it ever been explained why the process is not simple?

It only took you 3 weeks to get your account activated? I had an alt that took literally over a year to get activated
