The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Bulls offered guard Jimmy Butler a four-year, $40 million extension earlier this year which Butler decided to decline.

According to a source, Butler turned down a four-year, $40 million-plus offer from the Bulls. After watching Klay Thompson get the max four-year, $70 million contract from the Warriors, Butler was willing to test the market as a restricted free agent and force the Bulls to make the tough decision.

Butler looks like a genius to turn down the offer now. He's played like a top-five shooting guard this season, adding consistent scoring to his defensive chops. He's helped a banged-up Bulls team stay above water with a long road trip. His growth has been phenomenal this season and he looks like a legit star next to Derrick Rose if both can stay healthy.

The Bulls will likely try and slow down any offers for Butler by making it known that they will match any offer. They are notoriously brutal in negotiations, and often succeed in getting players to take paycuts despite thost tactics. Butler looks to have made the right move by turning down the extension, but getting significantly more money will be a challenge.

Jimmy Butler has been playing out of his mind lately and has been a huge part of Chicago's success. I don't think he's worth more than $11 million a year, but if I was Chicago's front office I would do anything to keep him. Butler has really come out and shown that he's a good player. This season, his offensive game has improved tremendously and as a defender, he's one of the best the league has to offer. Looking like one of the best 2-way players out there. Overall, the kid is special and he's gonna play a huge part of Chicago's future. Give the dude his contract.

He deserves to get payed. Been playing hard for the Bulls for a while now. If Parsons and Klay got so much, he definitely should. Best thing is you know Butler won't just get lazy either, he will continue working even harder, guy a tough SOB.

He deserves way more than Parsons, Hayward, or Bledsoe.

I'd turn it down too.

He could get 4/60 mill offers from multiple teams so good choice.

Houston needs to offer Butler and trade Jones for a some bench depth. Sign some back up post player in the offseason and move Ariza to the 4.

Beverley
Harden
Butler
Ariza
Howard

Best defensive starting lineup in the league. Spread the floor and fire away.

Harden is a good defender this year.

Still, I can't see Ariza guarding many 4's.

Houston is #1 in total defense THIS season.

Imagine if they had Butler and Howard playing instead of Donatas Montijuneas and Tarik Black.

Psh, like Terrence Jones does now?

He gets beasted by everyone he faces. Only reason he starts is because hes solid on the offensive end and a good rebounder. His defense is atrocious.

I would agree with you regarding Parsons and Bledsoe... but Hayward?

Remember Jones in the Portland series last playoffs?

I doubt it, since Aldridge torched him in the first two games and he spent the rest of the series on the bench.

Pay this guy what he wants. As a Bulls fan I do NOT want to see Jimmy Butler play for another team. EVER.

Bulls are going to lose him or have to pay a ton more for that weak offer.

Yeah.. I honestly thought this was a bumped thread from the off-season because that's such a lowball offer for the way he's been playing so far this season.

He'll get the max from somebody.. whether he deserves it or not is another question but if I'm the Bulls.. I pay up.

I hope the Heat offer him a max.

You got it. Dwight was a monster, and Asik had to come in and guard Aldridge. He only averaged like 22 or something after game 2, as opposed to the 40 whatever in the first two games.

I think Butler is the third best SG right now, easily. Swap the two and Butler would be balling out of control.

Who is better? Klay and Harden? Not sure about THIS moment, but Butler the last 2 weeks is in discussion for top 2.

Like Sprewell years ago, the man can't feed his family on $11 mil a year. Cut him some slack please.

Former NBA all star Latrell Sprewell must have choked away millions of dollars because he failed to make monthly payments on a house and a boat. He went into foreclosure on the home and the yacht was sold at auction. Sprewell received harsh criticism after saying "I've got a family to feed" while turning down a $21 million contract.

We're going to lose him ... whatever contract he's looking for is absurdity. And I like the guy.

Will be interesting who gets paid more/more sought after, him or Kawhi Leonard.
