I always thought the MVP was stupid being the top award. Why not just make it the best player of the year award? Makes more sense than trying to measure value which is almost impossible to measure

The MVP should be the best player award. Unfortunately the voters sometimes fall in love with a good "story" (Nash, Rose) or reward a guy for having great teammates.

Maybe it's to underline the fact that basketball is a team sport. And if your team isn't successful, you can't be the best in basketball.
Just speculation.
MVP allows story lines to grow.

That's just blatantly false. It's enough to take the award from those who deserve it most though
