Ah, back to a time where it was totally acceptable to dunk the ball at the end of the game even after victory had already been decided without anyone batting an eye lash.

He's probably the most underrated player of all time...and JUST BECAUSE OF ONE SEVEN GAME SERIES. He's pretty easily the greatest rookie of all time. He is possibly the greatest player of all time as far as an 82 game regular season goes. Elite defense and offense every year from 90 to 2001.

Wilt is Wilt...but Magic..really? Magic is a joke compared to Robinson head to head as rookies. David Robinson is pretty easily the greatest rookie of all time in the past 40 years.

David Robinson indeed had one of the craziest rookie seasons in the last 40 years.

I'm still picking Bird's and MJ's rookie season. Bird straight up beat Magic's rookie season, put up crazy stats averaging double double while shooting 40% from the 3pt line. I mean come on, before his arrival the team reached 29 wins, with him they got 61. In the competitive east I would say.

Speaking of Robinson's rookie season - do you guys feel his statistics may have resulted from the advantage of being a 24 year old rookie (he served two additional years in the Navy after graduation).

Or, do you feel it's amazing he was able to perform in the manner he did after essentially taking two years off form competitive basketball (aside from the '88 Olympics)?

Or does it all even out in the end?

Robinson had the misfortune of having a front office that had no idea how to build a team around him. Similar to Lebron in Cleveland the first time around. His supporting casts were historically bad and he still carried them to 50 win seasons. What DRob really needed to open his game up was three point shooters and SA had none(none that were reliable anyway). Compare that with all the great shooters Hakeem played with. Spacing is vital and DRob's team's had some of the worst spacing I've ever seen an all-time great big play with.

For proof of prime DRob's impact, here's the plus/minus per 100 possessions for a few notable stars in 1993/1994 NBA season:

Malone 7.3 -10.3 17.6
Hakeem 7.0 -7.5 14.5
Shaq 5.5 -2.2 7.7
Stockton 6.3 -1.0 7.3
Pippen 5.4 -1.5 6.9

Anyway, D-Rob is one of my favorite players ever... His efficiency did have some big drops in the playoffs, and his defense dipped too via numbers.. But as far as the regular season goes, perhaps the most complete player ever.

2009 Lebron was a beast for sure - probably the most impactful season in NBA history. Carrying a team is a back breaking chore though and it takes it's toll on the player come playoff time.

The mid 90s Spurs made some awful decisions putting together those rosters just like the 2000s Cavs. IIRC, the Spurs once had a deal to bring in Barkley and the owner turned it down because it was too expensive. That franchise didn't deserve to be handed Duncan with the kind of incompetence they were displaying throughout the 90s.
