I'm still a long-term believer in Elfrid Payton as long as he's given the time to develop. I would have taken him a bit higher in the draft even.

He's still a good defender and a good playmaker and those are arguably the two most important things you need out of a PG in the context of winning a championship. He can develop the rest of the tools along the way. No reason to think he won't with his size, athleticism, and length.

I agree that free throw shooting is one of the grossly underrated aspects of prospects and players in today's game.

For me its one of the easy ways to see who has a solid work ethic and who doesn't. Of course that doesn't apply for every player and every situation (some guys just have god awful mechanics ingrained into their muscle memory and have either big hands or some other problem making it hard), but it's always great to see a kid improve his FT% by 20+% while in college or after a few years in the pros.

If I remember right, they asked Jordan what he wishes he would have spent more time on while in the league, and his answer was free throw shooting.

He'll learn. I'm still high on him, he already looks like he can lead a team and run an offence. Some of the moves he's shown as well have been really nice, he can get to the rim when he wants he just needs to learn to hit the free throws or finish through contact/alter shots around defenders. If he can do that he will be very dangerous. One thing to remember is he has been working with the shooting coach trying to alter his shot mid season, usually it's a bad idea to change your mechanics mid year because it just messes you up more but I guess he didn't have a jump shot to begin with so it's worth doing. Still embarrassing but not the end of the world hopefully he uses it as motivation to work harder on that aspect. To be honest though right now people could just hack-a-payton if they want to beat us down the stretch.
