View Full Version : the solution to tanking

To stop tanking we need a method that doesn't penalize sucking but making sucking a long term(multiple seasons) tactic, like the sixers. We want to punish the horrible managers/owners that make a living out of this, not a team on a couple of down years (e.g. lakers). We also want to prevent b2b2b2b top5 picks (cavs).

My solution is to implement a weighted penalty scheme based on previous years of lottery position. Each consecutive year in the lottery should add an exponentially increasing penalty to the chance of getting a good pick, such that if you suck for 5 years in a row your chance of getting the #1 pick with the worst record should be 1 procent.
Furthermore, if the team doesn't win any of the top 3 picks, it shouldn't draft 4th (very high pick) but, for example, (4+2*year of consecutive sucking).

The kicker is that getting in the playoffs would reset all these penalties. Also, a decrease in penalty based on team record improvement should be considered.

An example of penalty for a team getting the worst record in the NBA b2b2b2b:
1st year in the lottery: 25% chance for 1st pick, picks 4th if not top3 (LIKE NOW)
2nd year in the lottery: 12% chance for 1st pick, picks 6th if not top3
3rd year in the lottery: 6% chance for 1st pick, picks 8th if not top3
4th year in the lottery: 3% chance for 1st pick , picks 10th if not top3
5th year in the lottery: 1% chance for 1st pick, picks 12th if not top3
this caps at 5, so 6th, 7th, 8th etc all identical to 5.

What do you think?

reward the teams that make effort to make the playoffs. 9th seed should get #1 pick. The good thing about it is that the same teams won't be back in the lottery next year.

There's no good solution to tanking, unless you find the legit way to legitly judge whether a team is tanking or it's just really sucking.

A team that really sucks can technically go sucking for b2b2b2b years, and I think they still deserve the top picks.

Horrible managers/owners need not be punished by bad draft picks, or any means. Horrible management will eventually be punished by the owners. Horrible owners will eventually be punished by reduced revenue from poor performance by the club.

The potential 8th or 7th (or even the 6th) seed teams would probably "tank" for the 9th place.

In case anyone here doesn't follow the Sixers, they tanking stuff is overblown. What I mean is that the Sixers aren't trying to lose as in the players are actually trying. What's happened is that they're fielded a team of non NBA players. So yes they are tanking in that their players are embarrassingly awful but the dudes try hard that's for sure, they just suck. haha

I think the #1 pick should be based on a similar weighted lottery system that only includes teams who have missed the playoffs 3 straight years. The #2 pick should be a lottery for teams that have missed the playoffs the past 2 years. The #3 pick should be based on those who missed the most recent playoffs. The rest should be in order of most recent records. This formula would help teams that struggle for years and truly need help, yet would help prevent teams who are having a single off year from tanking (example: Less incentive for 1997 Spurs to tank or this year's Thunder if Durant/Westbrook injuries were worse).

Tanking isnt a problem at all. Just ignore the tanking teams. The greater problem in the NBA is that franchise stay terrible for long periods of time

Eg. lack of parity

and 2 the NBA does a poor job scheduling attractive games for national television.

The NFL has tanking too. its the most popular and profitable american league by a wide margin.

The NBA should move away from max contracts and towards a hard cap and a salary floor. (this alone would eliminate super teams, and better distribute talent around the league)

Its easy for great players to take less money if they know that they have a maximum they can make. With no maximum an indivdual can make and only a maximum for a team, it will be harder for them to team up.

The sixers tank because they are a terrible team. even if they tried their best to win they would struggle to get 20 wins.

If anything the NBA should just get rid of the lottery and go towards the NFL draft model of worst team best pick, second worst team second pick, ... champion last pick

This would be the best way to get bad teams to turn around. Nobody likes losing but if you finish with the worst record and get unlucky and dont get the best player in the draft it will keep your team bad for a longer period of time.

nah, you think owners/coaches/fans/players would allow a tank and miss playoffs? shitstorm would occur.

the only way to tank=front office deliberately builds a shitty team like Philly has. Players and coaches don't tank. All of these guys play for future contracts, nobody would tank cuz front office asks them to.

Penalizing teams is dumb. It just ****s over teams that legitimately suck.
Just put the teams in tiers. The bottom 10 have an equal chance, the middle ten have a lesser but equal chance, and the top ten have a very low but equal chance.

Top 10 teams get a 1% chance each. Middle 10 get 3% each. Bottom 10 get 6% each.

Although that makes 10% chance that a top 10 team gets it, so that seems high. I'd rather they have 0% chance. I'd also like more tiers.

relegation. lulz.

could work if a smaller, more organized relegation league was constructed. Make it 2 divisions. First 6 promote, last 6 relegate and get a great pick => great chance to promote while also develop talent.

Seattle, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Tampa, st luis, fayetville, baltimore, nashville, cincinnati, austin, louisville, vegas....... these are all markets bigger than memphis and okc for example.

Ofcourse they are terrible. THey have a 32 Mil payroll, chose injured draft picks so they can't help at all.
Gave away players, Holiday, Vucevic, Hawes etc etc at thier peak for peanuts.
did NOT ACQUIRED ANY GOOD FREEAGENTS in the summer. :rant
