Top 5 protected.
but lets face it, the team as a whole is horrendous. lack of effort and IQ on the defensive end. and with the new starting 5, a lack of offensive output. but kobe still has the skill and determination to will his team to a handful of victories.
with that in mind, do you think the lakers will be bad enough to steal their pick back from the suns by snagging a top 5 pick. or will Kobe and the JV ballers surrounding him just win enough games to take them out of contention for their pick.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade it before the deadline

In the first weeks of the season it looked like obvious the Lakers would kept the pick but right now, with those east teams and the Wolves looking so bad, I really don't know.
Those 2 lately loses did help though. These were games that I was worried the Lakers could win.

Definitely. Just Philly and Pistons are playing worse than them.

Kobe may be doing a solid for the organization by backing off a little. May have been part of the contract.
If he went full speed, Lakers would easily make the playoffs.

Too early to call + even if they don't finish with a top 5 worst record, they could hit the lotto like the Cavs did last season.
Right now? I don't see them being worse than the Pistons, Sixers, Knicks, Wolves & New York. Hornets only have 1 less loss than the Lakers as well.
So potentially, Lakers could finish last in their Conference and still not keep their pick. That's just ridiculous.
I wonder if there's a way they could get their unprotected pick back if they traded the Houston pick + a player to the Suns? I'd appreciate if someone with more knowledge could give me some insight on this part.
If I were the Lakers FO, I'd look to make some moves to guarantee that they don't lose their top 5 protected pick, because it's the only thing worth playing for this season with the current roster. There's no point in running Kobe to the ground for the sake of finishing with the 8th/9th worst record instead of 5th.

Kinda worried...then again, we are the Lakers, even if we end up #11 we'll still get a top 5 pong ball.

again, you cant ****ing trade the pick. You already traded it. You could trade the player after the draft. I think they will probably not keep their pick. I think they will win enough that they are out of the top 5 (granted they might have a chance in the lottery, and the nba may rig it for them).

I'm talking about the first round pick via Houston in the Lin trade... not the pick they sent to Phoenix
Same trade Lakers also got the clippers second round pick for 2015 that Houston had recieved in trading the rights to a euro player
2015 first round draft pick from Houston
Houston's 1st round pick to the L.A. Lakers protected for selections 1-14 in 2015, 1-10 in 2016, 1-10 in 2017, 1-5 in 2018, 1-5 in 2019 and 1-3 in 2020 and unprotected in 2021 [Houston-L.A. Lakers, 7/13/2014]
2015 second round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
L.A. Clippers' 2015 2nd round pick to the L.A. Lakers (via Toronto to Houston) protected for selections 31-50 and 56-60 (if this pick falls within either of its protected ranges and is therefore not conveyed, then the L.A. Clippers' obligation to the L.A. Lakers will be extinguished) [L.A. Clippers-Toronto, 1/7/2009 then Houston-Toronto, 7/28/2010 then Houston-L.A. Lakers, 7/13/2014]
