View Full Version : Melo vs Durant argument

People pile on against melo because he never won anything. What exactly did Durant win? Okay so he go to the finals once where lebron embarrassed him.

Durant gets ALOT of help from the refs whereas melo hardly EVER gets any calls his way. If Durant was refereed the same way melo is refereed, he would get 5 less points a game.

I realize melo will never be loved by everyone, but for people to think that Durant is head and shoulders better than melo is just silly.

Look at the supporting cast, has Melo ever had an equal supporting cast? Where is his Westbrook, Jackson, Ibaka?

KD competes on both ends of the court. KD uses his supporting cast even when WB went down. There are a few quality players on the Knicks. Low iQ though. Amare was healthy when Melo first got there. They couldn't coexist on the floor. Melo just doesn't have a winner mentality. I don't even know if his game has actually improved. He's more polished than his rookie year, but his overall game nah. Just a volume scorer. Melo sucks as a leader. He needs to be on a team with a leader so that team can succeed.

melo is a terrible finisher around the rim. i dont know if there's another "superstar" who misses so many shots close to the basket.

KD is an all-time great talent. Melo isn't a legitimate superstar in terms of impact. Knicks fans deserve better.

I don't like Melo but even if you give him only Westbrook, they would compete in the Eastern Conference Finals every year. Melo is not the leader I/we thought he was when he was first came to the Knicks.

As much as I dislike Melo, he's the only reason to turn on MSG. That supporting cast is pure garbage. :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

Going to be great for you guys to shed a lot of dead weight this summer. Hopefully you can rid yourselves of J.R. too, but at worst one more season after this one of him.

I'm convinced JR will re-sign for the minimum here on the Knicks because he gets to party in NYC :facepalm

That's when I hope Phil says, thanks but no thanks now gtfo here :oldlol:

Us Knicks fans have suffered long enough. We need a winner. I think every NY sports team sucks this year... I don't watch hockey :oldlol:

How the hell did Lebron embarrass KD? I know KD didn't play as well as his numbers would suggest, but nor did Lebron. He shot less than 20% from outside the paint, depended heavily on the referees and his teammates' ridiculous shooting. KD's supporting cast (other than WB) laid an egg, and Lebron's teammates made an omelet with it in the shape of a ring.

There has not been a reasonable argument to be made with Durant vs Melo for like 3 years. A case could easily be made that Durant was as good as Melo ever was by his third season. This question will be laughable in retrospect.

It really wont even be worth talking about unless Durant falls off soon due to injury.

Durant could be in top 15 all time discussions.

If the NBA did its top 50 all time over right now Melo wouldnt make it. If you wanted to ignore accomplishments you could drop maybe 6 guys from the first list of 50 for Melo...but you would have to add too many before you got down to him.

Melo is a HOF player along the lines of Alex English...

Kevin Durant is gonna end up next to some of the best of the best.

That is because it is the Eastern Conference. Heck, if you REPLACE Melo with Westbrook the Knicks may be able to make it to the ECF.

every stat I posted are nearly identical, okay so carmelo averages ONE LESS basket than Durant, but yet Durant flails/flops and gets alot of bs foul calls and earns alot of cheap points at the line. Melo doesnt get the same calls. People acting like Durant is another level than Melo but their numbers are almost identical.

Durant's assist numbers are watered down from earlier in his career. He has much better vision and is a much better passer/playmaker than he was early in his career. Melo, on the other hand, has showed little to no improvement in that area.

Durant's APG stats:
08: 2.4
09: 2.8
10: 2.8
11: 2.7
12: 3.5
13: 4.6
14: 5.5

Notice the rapid increase in assists from 12-14, showing his huge improvement in that area.

Carmelo's APG stats:
04: 2.8
05: 2.6
06: 2.7
07: 3.8
08: 3.4
09: 3.4
10: 3.2
11: 2.9
12: 2.6
13: 2.6
14: 3.1

Notice how there is very little overall long-term difference. The difference between his best and worst year is just 1.2 APG.

This also does not count making good passes in the flow of the offense and moving the ball around from player to player effectively to get yourself or a teammate an open shot. Have you seen some of those pretty bounce passes Durant makes? It's basketball poetry in motion.

Easily Durant! But a few years ago when Durant was getting his feet wet, Melo had the edge. Those that say Durant WAS ALWAYS better than Melo are sadly mistaken. The evolution of Durant's all around game is the main difference. But in terms of total scoring skillset, I think Melo has the edge. Durant is the best scorer in the world don't get me wrong. But I think Melo's scoring skillset is more varied. Durant totally revolutionized the SF position. There was never a pure shooter damn near 6'11 with his handles and slashing ability.
