Heck, I probably could've coached those 90's Bulls teams to a few rings. Not sure why he's praised as much as he is.

If he's so great, let's see him lead the current Sixers team to 30+ wins.

The year after MJ's first retirement and the Lakers first title after the Jazz had swept them two years in a row. Sadly they didn't have to go through the Jazz. Kobe has done nothing without Phil.

Kobe happened to play most of his career (his best physical years) under Phil. so you're going to use that to discredit his legacy?

Kobe was what, 20 years old when Phil came to LA? And Lakers won 60 games the year prior :confusedshrug:

Lakers got swept in the 2nd round with Phil. A year later they at least won a game in the 2nd round under Mike Brown (should have went at least 6 games but Blake missed wide open 3).

Phil was great at managing superstars and his system surely helped, but it's not like Kobe couldn't have been successful on any other good team while in his prime.

He averaged 20/5/4 on 47% FG at 20 years old, the year prior to Lakers getting Phil. He was already on his way to becoming a great player.

And most GOAT-tier players had great coaches. Duncan's had Pop all his career, MJ had Phil, Shaq had Phil, Magic & Kareem had Riles, Lebron won his 2 rings under Riles..So you're going to say they couldn't win with any other coach as well?

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but what do you make of what's going on in NY? you'd think Phil would at least be able to help this team get to the playoffs, but Knicks players seem so immature

Great scorer without Phil certainly. Won nothing without him.

He took over a really good Bulls team who couldn't get it done and in two years one his first championship. Then he kept winning them and then he won some more in another city with different players. Pretty sure the only common denominator in that equation is him.

Phil is old and doesn't want nor have to work hard anymore.

You have that, plus the fact that the Knicks were already pretty tapped out when he got to them, they can't be overhauled in one offseason.

I've said this a million times before, but this Knicks situation is the exact same with Mike Holmgren and the Browns. Perennially struggling franchise goes out a hires a quasi retired champion coach as president, said president hires his buddies into important positions, president makes millions off the franchise without really doing anything, president leaves and franchise stays more or less the same. Obviously Pjax is much more of a bigger name in the NBA than Holmgren was in the NFL, but its the same deal of hiring a near retired guy who doesn't really wanna work and really has nothing left to prove. I don't care what anybody says, a team "president" with a GM already on board is a totally unnecessary position.

If Phil is actually successful he's going to get all the credit. If the knicks suck he's going to get none of the blame. It's really a win-win for him.

The difference is that the Bulls were close. The Lakers didn't appear to be close after getting swept by an aging Jazz team in consecutive years.

The fact is that 65% of the NBA titles have been won by the 4 major coaches so the truth is that most great players have never done anything without a great coach.....The 2004 Pistons won, Doc and the Sixers won, the Blazers won with Jack Ramsey who is also a great coach....

I've heard many anecdotes from his former players that explain why he is who he is. Sure the majority of his teams were stacked, but that alone doesn't guarantee victory. He was a special coach who was very cerebral in his approach and they loved him for it and ate it up like turkey on Thanksgiving. Shaq once spoke about the trust that Phil instilled in his players. He noted that he truly believed that if he did exactly as Phil instructed that a championship was the inevitable end game. And it often was...

Just google quotes from his former players and you'll pull up some answers...

Yeah, anybody who pays attention the NBA should know how highly his former players speak of him......

Kobe has been a lottery team/first round exit without Phil. We aren't just talking titles.

what's happening in New York is that Phil is not coaching that team. why would you think he'd be able to get that team to the playoffs when he's not the coach? he's management and so far, all his moves have been busts.
