View Full Version : Who are the superstars of the league?

Im Still Ballin

I'm talking about that elite top tier class. The best of the best.

Lebron
Durant
CP3
Westbrook
Griffin
Cousins
Davis
Curry
Harden

Anybody else? Was thinking maybe Melo, but he really hasn't shown much this year

Once DRose gets back to his old form, you can add his name to that list.

You have to be elite offensively, great defensively and be leading your team towards a respectable record to be considered a superstar.

So..LeBron, Durant, Harden, Paul and Howard once he gets healthy.

Lebron
Durant
Kobe
Wade
Rose
CP3

Maybe Dwight

Those are the first ones that come to my mind. There are a handful of players that are transitioning into being a superstar and some are transitioning out of it.

I think to be a superstar you have to be fairly known among casual fans, so that excludes Cousins.

MMM

Maybe Curry as well

I would say Melo too, but his attitude and leadership this year has really ticked me off man. 4-19 for no phucking reason.

You realize that 4 other players on that list are on a team with another superstar?

To answer OP:

LeBron, Durant

potentially Davis

I just can't consider 8 guys to be superstars. I consider the best 2-3 in the league to be superstars. It has to be someone you could ask non-NBA fans about and they will still know who he is

Lebron and Durant.

Then you have all the other names on the next tier. Davis is still on the next tier for me but he looks like he will hit superstar status soon.

Kobe
Wade
Rose
CP3

Maybe Dwight

Wade's still a good player, but he misses way too many games and imo hasn't been a "superstar" since 2011, when he was unquestionably one of the 3-5 best players in the league. Same goes for Rose, you can't really be a superstar when you never get to play

Just Lebron and Durant.
Westbrook, Curry, CP3, Griffin, Davis, Harden, Dwight, etc. are in the next tier.

Superstars are a super selective group.

brownmamba00
12-10-2014, 06:02 PM
Rose, Kobe, KD, LBJ and Melo (and maybe Blake and Wade too)

Being a superstar is more about popularity/jersey sales and name recognition instead of actual play imo.

Lillard, Curry and Wall will be big tho when they achieve some success in the postseason

Fudge
12-10-2014, 06:04 PM
Durant
LeBron
Irving
Love

Soon to be 3.

Popularity is pretty high on my list when it comes to defining a superstar.
For me, it goes like this:

1. Popularity
2. Past success
3. Stats
4. Respect by his peers and coaches

Lebron is on the top of the list followed closely by Kobe, then Wade, Durant, and Rose. World wide recognition by the non-fans, casual, and hardcore fans.

It depends on how you define superstar. I think there's two ways to do it:

1.) Truly elite, once in a decade-ish type players who you know can be put on just about any team in the league and take them from where they are to the next step -- i.e. a bad team to the playoffs, a non-HCA type playoff team to championship contender or fringe contender status, or a fringe contender to a true contender. Not necessarily generational/transcendent players, because that's being a little too selective in my opinion; but I do think the term "superstar" is used a little too liberally these days. Anthony Davis is on his way to being one of these type of superstars with one caveat: He has to start consistently making the playoffs and winning more games.

2.) Then you've got the type of superstars who are pretty well-known and marketable because, to the casual basketball/NBA fan, they're just as good as a LeBron and Durant. That, and/or they play in a bigger market and have commercials and a fairly popular shoe line, etc., or maybe a once transcendent/generational talent on their last legs in the twilight of their career. I think that's where pretty much every other possible superstar not in the LeBron/Durant group is at right now. Guys like CP3 (although you could argue he's in the LeBron/Durant group, Westbrook, Curry, Davis, Harden, Howard, Carmelo, Kobe, Dirk, KG, Duncan, and Wade.

So I guess Jordan's legacy should be tarnished because he had Pippen, Rodman?

Lakers had Worthy, Johnson, and Jabbar

Celtics had Bird, Parrish, McHale

How come you never try to knock down these guys legacies? Or I'm guessing the argument only applies to LeBron according to your agenda

:applause: Those 80's Lakers and Celtics are arguably the most stacked teams in NBA history, yet no one EVER criticizes Magic or Bird for the help they got. Imagine how much shit LeBron would get if he played with a 6x MVP AND a Finals MVP?

Rodman was no Bosh scoring wise bro, so you lost already with that invalid point.

Yeah but his defense and 17 rebound average compensates for that for sure.

If you think scoring is all there is to basketball/all star style play... then damn. No wonder you defend Melo

GrapeApe

The term "superstar" is obviously subjective. To me, a superstar is an all star caliber player with name recognition that goes beyond basketball fans. One or the other isn't enough, it has to be a combination.

It isn't. I'm not talking about Lebron, just merely the fact that he listed Love and Kyrie as superstars and not Lebron. His agenda is that Lebron is being carried by two superstars, which is not true. Love and Kyrie are not superstars, they are stars.

AintNoSunshine

I'd put harden, cp3 on the next tier. blake, love, wall, etc on the tier after that
