View Full Version : Need Help - Calling out Hip Hop Enthusiasts

So i'm completing a major assignment for an urban music course which requires me to find and summarizing 80 songs that relate to a number of different categories. So I need 10 songs per topic.... I know this board is charged with knowledgeable hip hop heads - Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*One catch - All songs must be recorded/released prior to 2000. Anything from 1999 and earlier suffices.
Here are some of the categories im tracking down songs for. I've compiled a decent list but this is actually a little more tedious than I assumed it would be.
• Hip-hop music and culture has been instrumental as a means of political and social awareness and evolution.
• Hip-hop promotes profanity amongst youth. Even children who are properly raised learn new cuss words through listening to Hip-hop.
• Violence, murder, and the criminal element are all imbedded within the messages, lyrics and themes of Hip-hop music.
• Battling and Competition has always been an important force driving Hip-hop and an important component inside of it.
• Misogyny and abuse of women
• Hip-hop music promotes positivity and self-confidence.
• Rap music exposes the inescapable horrors and harsh realities of living in the ghetto.
• Hip-hop promotes and advocates the use of narcotics and drugs as beneficial to one's lifestyle.
Cheers

I'm not an expert but I'll try
Political/social awareness
2Pac before All Eyez on Me
Ice Cube
Public Enemy
Profanity
Big L - Ebonics
Wu Tang Clan
Violence
DMX
NWA
Battling
You wanna listen to diss tracks such as 2nd Round KO, Hit Em Up and No Vaseline
Misogony
Snoop Dogg
Nas - You Owe Me
Positivity
Run DMC?
Harsh realities
Ready to Die - Notorious BIG
Illmatic - Nas
Use of drugs
Snoop Dogg
As I say, I'm no expert but I'm a fan. Hope it helps though

edit: before 2000 did not see that phhht
that is a neat assignment, something i would love to do. though i imagine if i actually had to do it... i wouldn't want to so much anymore. funny how even your favourite shit can feel tedious like that
some out of the box takes on a few of those topics
• Battling and Competition has always been an important force driving Hip-hop and an important component inside of it.
masta ace - dear diary (niiiice moody blues sample) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzl5-ll40nc)
i love that song because it takes the spirit of a battle rap but puts a twist on it by making it a diary entry. all kinds of angles to take on that; the inner monologue that must haunt young aspiring rappers telling them they just aren't good enough... it's a hard road to make it let alone with that shit eating you alive; are battle rappers really just enormously insecure? should angry rappers really just settle down and get themselves a diary?
i dunno seemed like an interesting choice.
another one that springs to mind is eminem's battle rap at the end of 8 mile... now everybody in the 313, put your mother****ing hands up and follow me... that allows you to explore the whole narrative of the movie out of which that climax springs
• Hip-hop music promotes positivity and self-confidence.
another one that can be taken different ways. i'll try to think of a few songs that actively engages and listener and inspires self confidence.
but there is also music that is just fun. think about all the club music from the past five years, incredibly upbeat, catchy and fun, no glaringly negative message attached (necessarily)
and then there's funny.. like goofy. eminem in his zanier less violence form. de la soul. jurassic five.
i've always loved this song (http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Worry+Not/6RPSKr?src=5) which sort of inspires a gritty "get over yourself" mentality. its technically about anxiety... gotta learn to live with it.
• Hip-hop promotes and advocates the use of narcotics and drugs as beneficial to one's lifestyle.
split this one up 50/50, those who promote it to glorify their status and image against those who promote it in a sincere attempt to explore through music the effects of drug use. nothin coming to mind on the latter front atm..
yea i dunno what else but id like to come back to this thread and see what others have to say.. g'luck in any case

For the category of political and social awareness and evolution, do you want positive or negative?

That's exactly how I felt at first until the tedium vibes set in. As a life long hiphop head I initially brushed this thing off as a pushover assignment.... And then I started it lol

Dead Prez are a great example you can use for the political part of your assignment.
They are right on the verge of 2000, but they do have a few great songs prior to 2000 illustrating some points that you can cover in your assignment.

Ridiculous isn't even the word lololol
"Girl you must have lost yo f'uckin mine, cause I know that ugly mutha f'ucka aint mine"
Like are you kidding me right now
It's far from the worst of it, but the hook is just so brutally redonk/callous with the whole "I aint claimin shit". Such a dry ass thing to say to a girl who's contending that she's pregnant with your child :lol
