Scientists have created a chemical that can be added to food to make people feel full.

Initial tests showed it helped people to eat less and slow weight gain.

It harnessed the power of a proprionate, which naturally makes us feel full when it is produced by breaking down fibre in the gut.

This is pretty interesting. Seems to expand upon how important gut bacteria is for being overweight.

Googing "propionate" I found this paper from a few years ago. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21521227)

Propionate as a health-promoting microbial metabolite in the human gut.

Propionate is a major microbial fermentation metabolite in the human gut with putative health effects that extend beyond the gut epithelium. Propionate is thought to lower lipogenesis, serum cholesterol levels, and carcinogenesis in other tissues. Steering microbial propionate production through diet could therefore be a potent strategy to increase health effects from microbial carbohydrate fermentation.Lipogenesis is basically fat-creation.

So this stuff is created when fiber ferments in your gut. A lot of recent nutritional advice is to eat fermented foods like pickles, sauerkraut, kim chi, keffir, etc.

Good for if you're fat and can't stop eating junk. I wonder how much muscle mass someone could lose using that to trick their brain to think they're full when their body needs food.

There are loads of chemicals which suppress appetite, nicotine being one of them.

How is this interesting or useful? It doesn't help anyone, merely excuses the need for self-discipline or personal responsibility. If someone can't exercise these most basic human qualities then whether they are fat or slim is of no importance whatsoever.

I can't think of one major food company adding this to their foods. People would consume less of their product, why bother? :lol

Honestly, feeling full is not generally a good thing anyway unless youre about to go to bed. It makes you lethargic and tired. Who wants that feeling at 1 pm when they have to head back to work from a lunch break?

How bout these people just stop eating like pigs?

I had a friend who used to say eating is a chore and it always sounded crazy to me. I mean I believe you, peeps have different biologies and some people have very large appetites and others very minimal, at the end of the day regardless where you fall you gotta do what you gotta do to stay healthy. But I honestly cant imagine feeling loathe to eat. Eating is ****in glorious. Just cant do it round the clock or youll look like kevinnyc. And that aint good.

Why is feeling full before going to bed, a good thing? You're not supposed to eat anything a couple hours before bed.

Im sayin the feeling of being full would be useful before bed. If you could get that feeling without having to eat a shit ton, thatd be pretty useful.
