Jay Z has some sick tracks but lyrically I think there are better rappers out there. His background soundtracks though are always popping. The end of Dirt off Your Shoulder song when it turns nighttime has one of the sickest background soundtracks I've personally heard.

Lyrically, I think the best albums I've heard from rappers of Jay Z NYC time in the 90s/00s is Nas-Illmatic and Blackstar by Mos and Talib. But all three of those rappers have had more bad albums then I would say Jay Z. Jay Z has had a few down albums but probably is the most consistent rapper of his time. If Biggie was never killed, I'm curious who the real king of NYC rap would have been.

Mos Def is my favorite rapper but most of his stuff post-BlackStar was weak.
