I recently had a situation where I severely rolled my ankle and had a pop in my knee too.

Doctor said the popping sound I heard was cartilage being torn/damaged. I'm guessing it wasn't severe as I felt fine after about 4 weeks in terms of knee movement and flexibility. Although my knee injury came from the initial ankle sprain, where as his seems to have just buckled.
