Hourly benefits: Getting paid for every hour you actually work, overtime potential, come in, do the job, and leave

Salary benefits: Usually no need to punch in, flexibility, paid holidays

I love flexibility, but love getting paid for all my work.
I hate timecards, but hate having to attend 3:00AM conference calls with clients in Europe.

Can't decide, ISH. :confusedshrug:

How much are you getting paid? I probably would choose hourly. Plenty of times I've been screwed into working hours I didn't get paid for.

unless you are a highly skilled specialist who makes obscene money by the hour, salary usually means real job while hourly pay means shmuck.

Pretty much sums it up. I get paid by the hour at a nice rate. Plus, overtime and a monthly commission if i meet goal (an easy goal at that). The commision check comes on the Friday BETWEEN paydays.

Salary, but just be careful because they might have you working 50-60 hours

I say salary. It is nice being able to take time off and not be stressed about "but I'm not making money right now." Plus, most salary jobs tend to be better anyway.

they both have their benefits if you have similar pay.
let's saying you make 50k a year on a salary, which is roughly 25 dollars hourly.

Pros:
Salary: alot of companies don't require you to clock in/clock out. So you technically don't have to work 40 hours a week/8-5 days, you could leave early if you have you stuff finished, or come in late, etc. Year end bonuses, raises, etc.

hourly: biggest PRO for hourly pay is overtime pay. That's where you make the most of your money (if your company has alot of overtime). Regular overtime pays are 1.5 times your normal pay. On certain circumstances where they need people to come in for overtime, they will pay double, or even triple the pay. So that 25/hour pay suddenly turns into 75/hour, which is retardedly high.

Cons:
Salary: few companies forces you to work overtime due to tight deadlines. And you get no overtime pay.

Hourly: if a company doesn't have any overtime opportunities, then yeah you are fcked. No raises. Some companies don't give you paid vacation. If you land on one of these then you are fcked. But jobs that require degrees usually give you paid vacations.

Unless I love my job, hourly. Plus if you are working with anyone, hourly. Less stress everyone is getting paid by the hour = better working environment.

I've done the same exact job under different titles as hourly as well as salary.

Hourly is incredible if you travel for work. You get paid from the time you leave home till the time you arrive at your hotel. I had to fly to Allentown in the winter of '11 and because of the frost I ended up getting delayed by 3 hours. At the end I got paid 8 hours for that on top of the 8 hours I had already put in. My coworker on the other hand was salary and got cheaper by the hour.

That said, salary is great in other ways. I used to have to put in a certain number of hours a week so I could get overtime and my paycheck was bigger. Now I make what I used to make with all the overtime but am only required to put in 40 hours. Sure there are times I've had to work lots of extra hours plus weekends in order to pull off miracles, but overall I come out ahead compared to a couple of years ago. Not to mention I qualify for the company bonus now.

Ultimately though, as others have said, this conversation only matters if you're not interested in working in your field long term. If you want a career you're eventually going to have to suck it up and go salary. I got lucky that my company matched what I was averaging annually with OT so I didn't lose any money, but there people who make the switch and lose up to 30% of their pay for a good 2-3 years in order to advance their careers.

hmm interesting so thats how it works in the US? here where i live hourly salaries usually mean that you are just a temporary worker, and are usually unskilled an easily replaceable.

That's in America too. Those who would prefer hourly probably never had a decent career in their life.

Well that's pretty much bullshit. Do you not consider being a technical expert a decent career? Most technician jobs I've come across are hourly.

The best jobs are salary based.
