TIGERS BAG DUREMDES, CABAGNOT, CALIMAG IN MULTI-PLAYER DEAL

Miranda, Ramos, draft pick to Sta. Lucia

Thursday, 05 April 2007

When Sta. Lucia and Coca-Cola collide on Wednesday, Kenneth Duremdes will be donning the red and white Tigers jersey alongside former teammates John Arigo and Ali Peek.

Confused?

While most people were preoccupied planning their vacations this Holy Week, the Realtors and the Tigers were busy on the negotiating table.

Apparently, the two ballclubs reached a deal Tuesday night with Sta. Lucia dealing Duremdes – the 1998 PBA Most Valuable Player – along with sophomore guard Alex Cabagnot and reserve forward Ricky Calimag to Coca-Cola in a multi-player swap.

"It's great that we got talented players whom we feel can help us big in our campaign not only this conference but in the seasons to come," said Coca-Cola coach Binky Favis.

"We got a veteran player in Kenneth who, with his experience, will bring leadership to the team, while I believe Alex is one of the best playmakers in the league," he added.

In return, the Tigers, who were removed from the San Miguel Corporation umbrella following the sale of Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. to The Coca-Cola Company, gave up former Far Eastern U point guard Dennis Miranda, substitute center Manny Ramos and Coke's second round pick in the 2008 Rookie Draft.

Trade documents have already been forwarded to the Commissioner’s Office for approval.

"I had no other choice but to sacrifice one of my marquee players because of our bulging payroll. Had I decided to keep Kenneth, we would be forced to play with just a nine-man lineup next season. It can’t be done," said Sta. Lucia governor Buddy Encarnado.

"Sayang si Cabagnot dahil bata pa. But no one would take Kenneth on a one-on-one trade," Encarnado added.

Before the trade, Sta. Lucia was the only team in the league still paying players a maximum amount of P500,000 a month. Duremdes, and Dennis Espino are guaranteed of that pay up to December next year. Marlou Aquino used to receive the same amount until the expiration of his old contract last season.

Aquino now gets the maximum pay of P350,000 a month under the revised salary cap rule.

Also under the revised cap rule, Cabagnot, the second round pick overall last season, is guaranteed of the maximum package of P8.5 million in his first three years in the league.

The same package went to Kelly Williams after being picked No. 1 overall by Sta. Lucia in the most recent Rookie Draft.

"We’re really having a hard time getting players we need because of our bulging pay ceiling. With this trade, we opened up some room to maneuver next year," said Encarnado.

"Of course, I was saddened by what happened, both players are close to me. But it’s really management’s call to make the deal because of the salary cap. Dennis and Marlou now have bigger responsibilities on the exit of Kenneth, Alex and Ric," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

Duremdes, now 33 and one of the league's 25 Greatest Players, said he feels sad about the development but at the same time excited to face a new challenge in his career.

"Nang dumating ako sa Sta. Lucia akala ko doon na ako magre-retire. Five years ko na sila (Realtors) kasama kaya medy malungkot tayo," said Duremdes, who spent most of last season on the injured list. "Sa isang banda parang bagong buhay ito sa akin. Panibagong challenge."

Coca-Cola is Duremdes' fourth team in a career now spanning 13 years. He spent his rookie year with the now disbanded Sunkist, which made him the league's third pick overall in 1995 before trading him to Alaska in 1997.

Duremdes played a key role in the Aces’ rotation and, in seven years helped the team win two of its 10 championships before Alaska dealt him to the Realtors on Draft Day of 2003 in exchange for Sta. Lucia's first round pick (fifth pick overall). (DBC/NC)

SAN MIGUEL FINALLY BREAKS INTO WIN COLUMN

McMillan stars as Beermen check 10-game skid this season

Wednesday, 04 April 2007

The breaks San Miguel Beer had long been longing for finally came its way.

It came aplenty at crunch time as the Beermen checked their 10-game slump in the 2006-07 PBA season, withstanding the Talk N Text Phone Pals, 106-98, in their Holy Wednesday tiff at the Araneta Coliseum.

Paul McMillan scattered 41 points and the Beermen watched the Pals self-destruct on their endgame charge as the Philippine Cup runners-up nailed their first win in seven starts in the 2007 Talk N Text Fiesta Conference.

"Finally, we got one," said coach Siot Tanquingcen as his Beermen stopped their bleeding.

KINGS REPEAT OVER BULLS SANS MENK

By Bianca Marie Teodoro
GOL Official Newswriter
08 April 2007

The Barangay Ginebra Kings had a restless Holy Week to prepare hard for this game. To add more pressure, their most dominant local big man Eric Menk suffered a sprain in his right calf muscle. Johnny Abarrientos was not yet able to suit up and there were still no reports about Rudy Hatfield's possible return.

These turn of events, however, were not enough reason for the Kings to give in easily. They beat the league-leading Red Bull Barako for the second time this conference, 100-84. These two teams are now tied at first place in the standings, with six wins and two losses.

Rod Nealy had another stellar performance, outplaying the Barakos' import James Penny for the second time around. Nealy nailed in 38 points as compared to the supposed "imports' yardstick" Penny, who led his team in scoring with 22.

The first and only time that the Barakos were in the lead was at 2-1, in the first few seconds of the game. Ginebra grabbed the lead after Egay Echavez was able to convert three freethrows. The Kings were in the driver's seat since then.

Penny was in foul trouble early in the game and was forced to sit down in the first quarter due to the two fouls he committed with over eight minutes to go. His absence made it possible for the Kings to outnumber Red Bull in terms of assists, 7-1, and they even shot better at 56% compared to the Barakos' 32%.

Ginebra had their highest lead in the second quarter at 24, at the 4:26 mark. They finished the first half with a 17-point lead, and Nealy leading all scorers with 20. Ronald Tubid led all locals with 12 points, including 7 rebounds to top all players.

Red Bull tried to catch up with Ginebra in the second half, as tighter defense was applied to Nealy. The Kings also suffered a 4-minute scoring drought in the third quarter, to which the Barakos tried to take advantage of. However, Sunday Salvacion's three point specials and Nealy's hardwork made it possible for them to hold on to the lead, and eventually end the game in a large margin.

Nealy finished the game with 38 points and 16 rebounds. This is his eighth consecutive double-double performance, and the eighth game of the Kings this conference. Tubid, on the other hand, had a spectacular all-around game with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. He shot 50% from the three point line.

Next game will be in Dubai, April 13 against Purefoods.

The scores:

Ginebra 100 - Nealy 38, Salvacion 21, Tubid 19, Echavez 10, Chia 6, Mamaril 4, Seigle 2, Macapagal 0, Santos 0, Holper 0.

Red Bull 84 - Penny 22, Baguio 10, Valenzuela 10, Sharma 8, Villanueva 8, Fonacier 6, Robinson 6, Cruz 6, Hrabak 5, Najorda 3, Alvarez 0.

STRONG FINISH BY KINGS BRINGS DOWN GIANTS IN DUBAI

Nealy, Tubid star in come-from-behind win which hands Uichico All-Star
Game stint

Saturday, 14 April 2007

DUBAI, UAE. -- Coach Jong Uichico had said in jest that Barangay Ginebra would bring in more heat to this tiny emirate.

True to his words, his Kings, relying on a big wind-up, beat the Purefoods TJ Giants 92-82 Friday in a Talk 'N Text-PBA Fiesta Conference first-ever sortie in this sunbathed, yet energetic emirate that is home to around 265,000 registered Filipino workers.
The Kings, with four of them turning in double-digit outputs, took three full quarters to size up the Giants, and then went to the trio of Rod Nealy, Ronald Tubid and Jec Chia for the big baskets that pushed the Giants to kingdom come and which delighted around 5,000 Filipinos

2007 PBA Mock Draft

1.Joe Devance (Welcoat Dragons) - Height: 6-7 DOB: 1983, Last year he could have been the top overall pick if he already complete all the major requirements in his citizenship case. The 6-7 Devance is a former PBL Most Valuable Player Devance is averaging 15.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in his last PBL Stint in 2005-06 Seasons. I think Welcoat in order to booster their frontline will select Devance in this years draft.

2.Rob Reyes (Coke traded to SMB) - Robert Reyes 6-6 Harbour Centre / Jacksonville. If Reyes made it to the deadline, they would have selected Reyes 1st first overall. SMB is in love with Reyes' game - no-nonsense, great rebounder, loves the dirty work inside and has full of energy, something their current big men lacks.

3.Marvin Cruz (Alaska Aces)

SYDMAN’s TOP TEN: The best Top Overall Picks

The PBA Draft started in 1985 with Santiago “Sonny” Cabatu becoming the league’s first top pick. Incidentally, it was his teammate Leo Austria who bagged the plum.

Left out from the list are duds Alex Araneta and Apet Jao. Later top picks like Yancy de Ocampo, Mike Cortez, Rich Alvarez, Jay Washington, and Kelly Williams are too inexperienced to make the list. Paolo Mendoza, Sonny Cabatu and the late Jack Tanuan almost made the list but not quite.

My Top 11 is Andy Seigle. He should be my number ten since he did made then-newly christened Mobiline Phone Pals (formerly Pepsi) to new heights but he’s spelled out by a pretty controversial choice.

The Top Ten starts… NOW!

10. THE BIG PUNISHER

Earl Sonny Alvarado (Batch ’99) – The Big Punisher. I had to put some controversy, right? He seemed to be the perfect choice. What a **** up. Then-Tanduay coach Alfrancis Chua salivated on the former Texas Longhorn standout when he saw his name on the draft list. Tanduay was set to debut that season. From the PBL he has elevated most of his roster led by Eric Menk. Came draft day, he quickly pounced on the 6’6 leaper. He didn’t disappoint Chua as he has been great just like what he expected. However when claims of his falsification aroused he quickly bailed the league (he said he’ll clear his name but to this day he has been unheard of). After he left Chua and Tanduay boss Bong Tan severed their ties with Chua eventually leaving the club. Tanduay then dismantled their franchise.

Funny thing about this is: just when you think you found your savior, he turns out to be the living proof of the apocalypse.

Blah! Chris Cantonjos must be dying to punish Alvarado for taking away his precious minutes that could have saved his PBA stint…

9. THE TANK

Noli Locsin (Batch ’94) – The Tank. The old-school Ginebra bad boys have either retired or now playing for other teams, with only Robert Jaworski, Pido Jarencio and Jayvee Gayoso (Jarencio and Gayoso are in the barely stage) as the last links of that storied era. Locsin, a burly forward coming from DLSU topped a draft which included Rey Evangelista and eventual Rookie of the Year winner Boybits Victoria. He technically became Ginebra’s first piece for greatness that served as prequel for the acquisitions of Aquino and Wilmer Ong (via draft), Benny Cheng and Vince Hizon (via trade), and Bal David (free agency) to form the formidable Ginebra ragtag/glamour group of the 90’s. Locsin was then traded to Pop Cola for Vergel Meneses where he drifted to other PBA teams. Before the Fil-Am invasion, The Tank was collared as one of the top bruisers of his time.

8. THE SKYSCRAPER

Marlou Aquino (Batch ’96) – The Skyscraper. Pushed thru the spotlight because of his 6’9 frame, this goggled giant was a fixture in the PBL grounds playing for such teams as Nikon, Otto Shoes, Sta. Lucia, and the 1995 PBL Grand Slam team Stag. He finished his UAAP career with controversy, as Adamson was forced to sit out a season with his eligibility in question. His entry to the Ginebra team gave them a dominant force to gel with Locsin since their 7 foot monster doesn’t loom as a marquee guy (in 1995, Ginebra took its second choice and drafted EJ Feihl). In his then-promising career, twice did he almost make the MVP award his after powering the Gin Kings to multiple championships. When he was traded to the Sta. Lucia Realtors (the PBA version) , he helped to give the team its first league plum. One of the amateur players that played for the national team in the 1994 Asiad, his jolens shot and that once in a game three point attempts are basically his distinguishing moves. But his defense, if motivated, makes him the force that he is.

7. THE REAL DEAL

Jun Limpot (Batch ’93) – The Real Deal. The Surigao native started his collegiate career playing for University of Manila, then getting a crack at the DLSU lineup. Despite heavy competition led by NCAA MVP Benny Cheng, FEU and Crispa (PBL) stalwart Vic Pablo, and future MVP Johnny Abarrientos, Limpot became the top pick for the novice, Sta. Lucia Realtors. Leading the group anchored heavily on him, he averaged supreme numbers and eventually became the Rookie of the Year that season. One weakness in his arsenal proved to be his inability to lead his team to a championship. Add the fact that despite his frame he is said to be afraid to mix it up in the paint. He waited for that title to land on his grasp as a second stringer at Purefoods.

6. THE MENACE

Dennis Espino (Batch ’95) – The Menace. He led the UST Tigers to an unprecedented 14-0 win loss record which immediately annexed the title for the Espana based dribblers. Playing for Magnolia in the PBL, he played great ball to emerge as Sta. Lucia’s second top pick ever in 1995. Despite losing to Jeffrey Cariaso in the Rookie of the Year race, it’s hard to not give a damn on the 6’6 slotman. He has played in numerous international jousts and even helped the Realtors to its first ever title, months after the trade that shipped out Jun Limpot. Currently he is the longest cager to perform in a team that he has played since day one, lasting 12 years.

5. THE THRILLER

Willie Miller (Batch 2001) – The Thriller. This giggly speedster started out as a supplement for the Chris Calaguio-led offense of the Letran Knights. Unstable and often unheralded, the only thing that stands out for him is his color and foreign-sounding name. That changed in 1999 – with the addition of the Nueva Ecija Patriots in the MBA he quickly became a brand name. His moves became more furnished and his game got a little better. It was no surprise for everyone that Red Bull took him number 1 in the 2001 PBA Draft. As a Jimwell Torion backup, he quickly became a starter. His development was so rapid that merely a year after being drafted he became the league’s MVP. He is the first and only MBA player to be drafted top of his class. Although, his MBA career disqualified him from getting the Rookie of the Year award, as pick number 3 Mark Caguioa garnered the recognition.

4. THE AERIAL VOYAGER

Vergel Meneses (Batch ’92) – The Aerial Voyager. Forget that he simply vanished from the league unceremoniously – his mark in Philippine basketball is legendary. Supplied with an amazing vertical leap, Meneses was a star even when he has yet to jump in the PBA. In 1992, he was crowned as the top pick. He teamed up with Allan Caidic to create a great slash and shoot combo for Presto. However, they failed to get the necessary help from their teammates. Add the fact that San Miguel played extremely well throughout the season, Meneses lost the Rookie of the Year title to arch-nemesis “The Cosmic Avenger” Bong Ravena. Ravena however, was in fact a reliever for the likes of Samboy Lim and Ato Agustin and basically was not a focal point in the San Miguel offense. The former JRU Bomber got back at Ravena though, having a great playing career (until the end) with the 1995 MVP Award serving as its highlight.

3. THE RAISE THE ROOF KID

Danny Ildefonso (Batch ‘98) – The Demolition Man. The Raise the Roof Kid. One half of the Danny Boys. From my last take, I saw some controversies with my choices but despite that according to my criteria, he should have landed on the second spot, I can only drop him to three. Anyway, if the lawsuit fell right into MBA’s favor, the former NU Bulldog should have played for the Pangasinan Presidents. Turns out, he became Shell’s third first top pick (After Cabatu and Paras, and before Rich Alvarez). Shell then traded his rights to SMB for the services of Noy Castillo and future considerations. Danny Ildefonso’s entry marked the end of Nelson Asaytono’s scoring barrage (a year before Danny I’s entry, Asaytono was average almost 30ppg). He leads the league in Best Player of the Conference citations and moreover, he’s a back-to-back MVP. However some will say that had Danny Seigle, the other Danny, played more games than the Demolition Man, he could have easily obtained those citations. Injuries might have stalled him these past few years but his ability to light the court with his amazing clutch plays makes him a remarkable player.

2. THE TRIGGERMAN

Allan Caidic (Batch ’87) – The Triggerman. His ability to cream defenders with his cold blooded troikas made Allan Caidic the top pick of the 1987 draft. Picked up by Great Taste, the former UE Warrior quickly made a name for himself that he was awarded as the Rookie of the Year of that season. It was in 1990 with Great Taste now christened as Presto, did Caidic gained his best form, besting Alvin Patrimonio, Benjie Paras, Paul Alvarez and Ronnie Magsanoc to become that year’s MVP. In 1993 when Presto changed management to become the Sta. Lucia Realtors, Caidic went to San Miguel to join his former teammates in the multi-talented Ron Jacobs-led Philippine Team. He made respectable numbers as a Beerman but he did have a number of injuries, the best known was the one where Jaworski made the unpopular slit throat sign when Caidic bounced hard on the hardwood floor. He finished his career at Ginebra where it also finished Jaworski’s career as the club’s head coach – perhaps some sort of bad blood between the two. Nonetheless, he’ll forever be remembered as the man who had the highest point total for a local when he launched overwhelming triples to power his 79 points.

And speaking of power…

1. THE TOWER OF POWER

Benjie Paras (Batch ’89) – The Tower of Power. In 1989, SMB claimed a feat only the Crispa Redmanizers could ever brag about – a grand slam title. Ramon Fernandez was a sure man to get the title but he didn’t. Some kid came from nowhere and took what could have been his record-breaking fifth MVP Award. This same guy from UP also snatched a championship against the Jerry Codinera-led University of the East.

Anyway, before he became a bald-headed comedian, Benjie Paras was a big-haired prep star. He entered the league and made Shell an instant contender. This was like when Lew Alcindor (Now called Kareem Abdul Jabbar) made the Milwaukee Bucks a title threat when they selected him first pick of 1969. Twenty years past, Paras is hailed in the record books as the first and only player to achieve the MVP and the Rookie of the Year plum in the same year.

The feat he accomplished was almost duplicated in 1999 when Danny Seigle, another player from SMB, proved to be a sure pick for the MVP and Rookie of the Year title. Unfortunately he wasn’t. The person who took it? Paras, of course – making him the player who waited the longest the get back the MVP distinction. Once an aggressive slamming machine, injuries sidelined him in the mid 90’s. He developed a Webber-like jump shot, and he made a living out of this until his retirement. He did return out of his retirement, and he did it by joining the same team he took two MVP’s in the course of his career, playing limited action, but his image alone serves as basis for intimidation – as a San Miguel Beerman.

yah, i know he's the nephew of Eric Reyes. but that doesn't mean that he's a filipino. what if he's already an american citizen? and, what's the reason for their absence in the PBL despite having a good conference there? Devance is the MVP i think 2 conferences ago while Reyes was an important part of the champion harbour team.

and i think, no team will draft Reyes at number 2 or in the first round. there are plenty big men way better than him, who has outside shooting and has foot work. Reyes is much like Sam Ekwe of San Beda. Belga, Bono, Aljamal, Kramer, and Quinahan are some of the big guys that will be drafted ahead of Reyes if he decides to turn pro.

10.Douglas Kramer (Red bull), it is obvious that the Redbull management will select this 6-4 forward from Ateneo. With half of the lineup coming from Katipunan, I think this will be a reunion of some sort.

fyi, red bull doesn't have a first round pick this year. red bull traded its 2006 & 2007 first round pick to alaska for rich alvarez. they cannot get Intal and Kramer in the second round because they are 1st round locks. but if they really want a dimwit atenean(sorry, redundant) they can draft macky escalona which can surely help their back court. red bull really needs a point guard. but, when this happens, another atenean will lose his spot and that is membrere who can't even bring down the ball and always commit turnovers. one of the worst pick in the 2006 draft.

I think REdbull get the first round pick from the Tugade trade last PBA Conference, so it defend on the final position of the SMB this Conference in which they are on the bottom cellar.

DANNY I POWERS SAN MIGUEL TO 5TH CONSECUTIVE WIN

Red Bull drops to 4th; Villanueva follows RP-SMC 5 to Iran

Saturday, 12 May 2007

CEBU – Danny Ildefonso gate-crashed and spoiled Red Bull’s sendoff party for FIBA-Asia Champions Cup-bound Enrico Villanueva Saturday night here.

Ildefonso frolicked in the fourth quarter and fuelled San Miguel Beer’s decisive charge en route to a 98-93 spanking of Red Bull in a 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference road game at the New Cebu City Coliseum.
Ildefonso and the Beermen outmaneuvered Red Bull at crunch time, sustaining their searing run to draw closer to the teams in the upper half of the chart.

The Beermen shrugged off a listless start, fought the Barakos toe-to-toe in the two middle quarters before picking up the momentum in the final period to stretch their streak to five games.

Keeping their hot run going, the Beermen, now at 6-7, drew within a game of the fifth running Talk N Text (7-6).

Red Bull, notwithstanding James Penny’s 30-point explosion, slid to fourth place at 9-5.

It was a sorry loss for the Bulls, who were hoping to jack up their record as they’re to lose the services of Villanueva in their next game. Right after their game versus San Miguel, Villanueva left for Manila to catch the 12:20 a.m. Air Emirates flight for Dubai en route to joining the RP team in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Tehran, Iran.

Villanueva scored six points in the contest.

Ildefonso personally spoiled Red Bull’s sendoff party for Villanueva as he sizzled in the fourth quarter, carrying the Beermen to the five-point win.

The two-time MVP winner scattered 11 of his 20 points in the payoff period.

The two teams ended the first half tied at 48-all with Red Bull taking control in the opening quarter and San Miguel making a wild chase in the second period.

The Barakos closed out the opening canto with an 11-to-nothing run while the Beermen drew level with an 11-2 attack to end the second quarter.

Olsen Racela fired two triples and totaled 12 points in the second period with Dorian Pena adding 11. (NC)

The scores:

San Miguel 98 – Ildefonso 20, Pena 17, Young 15, Racela 12, Adriano 8, Wilson 8, Gonzales 5, Tenorio 5, Calaguio 4, Cablay 2, Adducul 2, Espino 0.

Red Bull 93 – Penny 30, Cruz 11, Fonacier 11, Baguio 10, Najorda 10, Alvarez 7, Villanueva 6, Sharma 6, Bugia 2, Yvanez 0, Membrere 0, Hrabak 0.

Sunday, 13 May 2007

Purefoods put up a monstrous game and got away with a convincing triumph after letting three straight pulsating contests slip away.

Drawing 30-point games from three players, the Giants built a 25-point halftime lead and held off the Barangay Ginebra Kings' determined chase in the final half for a 117-105 win Sunday night in the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Peter June Simon fired 31 points while Marquin Chandler and James Yap poured in 30 apiece for the Giants who played with a sense of urgency to check their slump.

"We badly needed that win because we're fighting for survival. We're not yet out of the woods but we're out of that 10th spot at least at the moment," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

Dealing the Kings their first back-to-back defeats in the tourney, the Giants improved to 5-10, two wins ahead of the cellardweller Welcoat Dragons at 3-10.

"Tinangal ko na ang pressure sa team. We're no longer looking for the top two nor the top five. We're just looking to survive and make the wildcard. Our sights are now set on that," said Gregorio.

The entire buzz around the NBA Playoffs is taking out the interest in the PBA. So what better way to stir reaction than to cash in with the PBA’s resident crowd pleasers!

(Surely this should land me some kind of fanbase too, hehe
! ANYWAY!)

Since 1979, the Baranggay Ginebra Kings is undoubtedly the premiere crowd drawer of the league. Superstars like Allan Caidic, Paul Alvarez, Johnny Abarrientos, and Freddie Hubalde suited for the squad at one point of their careers. Powerhouse Benjie Paras tried desperately to opt out of his Shell contract when the Gins called for his services. For budding superstars, if you want to become a great star and have a huge fan following, then Ginebra is your best option.

Gilbey’s Gin started in the PBA with Willie Tanduyan and Willie Generalao leading the charge. Then the team’s fate dramatically changed. As the Toyota franchise disbanded in 1984, most of its players were “sold” to the Beerhausen franchise. Ramon Fernandez was one of the players included in the transfer. However, Robert Jaworski resisted and stated that they were not for sale and they were not “pieces of meat”. This also further exposed the rift involving Jawo and The Franchise. When Ginebra came to the picture, “Jawo”, Arnie Tuadles, and Francis Arnaiz joined the Kings. They also brought the then-Toyota fans to the once talent-plagued squad to further strengthen this budding basketball institution.

Ginebra produced, developed, and created a slew of stars that the fans cheered throughout their Ginebra tenure. Here are the players that best described the celebrated franchise.

Before the list we should mention that Rudy Hatfield, Ronald Tubid, Rafi Reavis, and Billy Mamaril are not included for the reasons that they have yet to have a complete season with the Kings. Special mention from this list were the other players in the 80’s like Cayetano Salazar, Ed Ducut, and Mukesh Advani, 90’s players like Elmer Lago, Mike Orquillas, Macky de Joya, and Dodot Jaworski, and other players like Joey Marquez, Dennis Roldan, Terry Saldana, Willie Generalao, Pongkie Alolor, Bennett Palad, and Ronald Magtulis.

MY TOP 30 (Criteria: Popularity, Stats, and Tenure as a GIN)

30) Wilmer Ong – Long before Junthy Valenzuela, Ong was the most recognized hitman during the 90’s. Whenever Jawo wants a person taken out, Ong will viciously bump and ravage his opponent until he gets pissed with Ong and challenges him to a brawl. He had a long tenure as a King.

29) Benny Cheng – The former NCAA MVP found his way to the Gins via trade for Manny Victorino. He was the team’s starting forward, providing the hustle and the scrappy plays.

28) Sunday Salvacion – Another former NCAA MVP, Sweet Glorious Sunday transformed from a collegiate offensive powerhouse to a multi-dimensioned player. His clutch triple bombs have been one of his strong suits.

27) Willie Tanduyan – Little is known about this player but the former Crispa stalwart was one of Gilbey’s Gin’s first superstars. He was one of the franchise’s pioneers when it debuted in 1979.

26) Rodney Santos – Another former NCAA MVP, the Slasher found himself as a Gin when he was traded alongside Andy Seigle for Jun Limpot. He quickly became part of Kings’ insanely quick backcourt rotation.

25) Manny Victorino – One of the finest centers of the PBA during the 80’s, Victorino was taken from Pepsi in exchange for draft pick Victor Pablo. He played in the team during their championship-less years.

24) Sonny Cabatu – This was his first and only stint as a top guy. Despite playing for a team that desperately needed wins, he was their main man in the paint. He had a double-digit points average while playing as a Gin.

23) Vergel Meneses – This 1-time MVP was so sought after by the Gins that they had to give up popular Gin King Noli Locsin. But when a rookie named Mark Caguioa started his climb to the top, disemboweling his minutes… especially during fourth quarters, he headed to FedEx afterwards. .

22) Rey Cuenco – The former first pick overall in the 1986 Draft found was sent to Ginebra by Shell for Romy dela Rosa. He was an exciting scorer but injury-plagued throughout his career. He was best remembered as the person who ignited the Ginebra walkout (called Anejo then, they protested a foul against Cuenco which led to the stiff 550,000 fine they got from their actions).

21) Joey Loyzaga –He was efficient as a shooter but this wide-bodied talent was also an able defender. He was also part of the Ginebra Bad Boys that shackled every offensive threat that barges in their way. He was also known as a former beau of screen goddess Gretchen Barretto.

20) Dondon Ampalayo – Called the Magic Man, the former Rookie of the Year could play inside and outside. However, his Ginebra stint was short-lived as the management feared of his effectiveness being injury prone and all. He was sent to Alaska in a forgettable trade, with the Kings getting ‘suppossedly” good Stevenson Solomon.

19) Leo Isaac – If Jawo was Magic Johnson then Isaac was their version of Byron Scott. At that time he was big for his position that on a regular basis, he creates mismatches. He was not much of a speedster but he does what it takes to claim wins. He was part of their championship in ’86.

18) Philip Cezar – The Scholar played his final years as a pro with the Gins. The Tapal King was still controlling the boards like a youngster though. Aligning himself with the Big J was a tough act – since they’ve possibly swung their fists at each other during the Crispa-Toyota Era. However, this unlikely bond prospered after his playing career as he became Big J’s chief assistant during their 1997 title run.

17) Mama Mamaril – Current King Billy should learn a thing or two from his father. Despite his reed-thin frame combining with his 6’6 body, “Mama” was fearless. His unwavering defense, whether against locals or imports, proved vital for his lengthy stay in the majors. He also never backed down from a fight. He finished his career alongside Isaac, with their former rival, Shell.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- A former NBA player charged with dealing cocaine while his six young children were with him was sentenced to five years in prison.

Henry Charles James, 41, of Fort Wayne, pleaded guilty to one charge of distribution of a controlled substance for selling crack cocaine while on probation for marijuana possession. As part of the plea, prosecutors dropped one charge of distribution.

James was arrested on Sept. 7 after bringing his six daughters, ages 3 months to 6 years old, to a drug deal, according to police. He sold at least 5 grams of crack cocaine for $400 on two separate occasions, police said.

In U.S. District Court Wednesday, James apologized and thanked his family, friends, coaches and fans for their support.

"I'm going to rebound from this, and I'll be back," he said.

James, a Fort Wayne native and graduate of North Side High School, played professional basketball in the 1990s for several NBA teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks.

HOT, HOT BEERMEN WIN AGAIN
Cablay, Racela lift SMB to 8th win in a row

Sunday, 27 May 2007

Brandon Cablay made the most of his rare start and Olsen Racela sank four free throws in the final 30 seconds as the San Miguel Beermen won their eighth straight.

Cablay had a terrific night, capping it with two key plays in the closing minute to cushion the impact of Barangay Ginebra's desperate rally and led the Beermen to a 101-98 decision over the Kings Sunday in the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

After Rod Nealy split his free throws to tie the count at 95-95 with 1:24 to play, SMB called time before Cablay (9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and an ounce of hustle) scored off Ginebra's reserve center Andy Seigle from the right low block. Then on SMB's next possession, the athletic guard grabbed an offensive rebound that paved the way for Racela's two free throws and a 99-95 lead that held on to the end.

US-HONED REYES 1ST 2007 PBA DRAFT APPLICANT

Tuesday, 19 June 2007

STRESSING he's ready for the big league, sleeky guard Ryan Reyes made himself available by becoming the first player to apply in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Draft on August 19 at Market Market in Taguig.

The 6-foot-2 Reyes, a former high school teammate of NBA three-point champion Jason Kapono of the Miami Heat, is Henkel-Sista's star playmaker in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) where he steered the Super Sealers to a third place finish in the recently-concluded Unity Cup.

In his stint in the season-ending conference, the 23-year-old Reyes led the Super Sealers in scoring with an average of 11.4 points per game, while shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Reyes, who played alongside Kapono at Artesian High in California, averaged 2.4 steals a game to pace the league, while being named Fantastic Freshman during the PBL's conference awards.

Accompanied by his agent Charlie Dy, Reyes personally visited the PBA Office to submit his application and other pertinent papers.

"Handang-handa na," said the early pro hopeful in straight Filipino. Although raised in the US, Reyes' parents were both still Filipino citizens at the time he was born.

Prior to his PBL stint, Reyes also saw action in the National Basketball Conference (NBC) and played for the Cebuana Lhuillier sponsored national team in 2005.

He is actually among the foreign-honed players being eyed by coach Chot Reyes for inclusion in the RP men's training pool.

ALASKA LEFTIES DO EVERYTHING RIGHT

Aces take commanding 2-0 semis lead vs. SMB

Friday, 22 June 2007

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s170/Legend_Stopper/2007-06-22_MILLER_0696.jpg

Alaska’s left-handed players did most of the damage as the Aces handed San Miguel Beer a 93-68 beating in Game 2 Friday night to take a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-7 semifinal series in the Talk ‘N Text-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
After the Beermen raced to a 6-3 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game, lefties Rosell Ellis, John Ferriols, Willie Miller and Reynel Hugnatan combined to score 15 points in a 22-2 run during the remainder of the first period as Alaska broke the game wide open. Those four Aces actually outscored the entire SMB squad which trailed 22-8 at the end of the first 12 minutes of play as the Beermen matched the lowest output in a quarter this conference.

Another left-handed player in Eddie Laure joined in the scoring fray, pouring in all his nine points in the two middle periods and helping Alaska take leads of as much 33 in the one-sided game, which turned out to be San Miguel Beer’s worst loss in three conferences under head coach Siot Tanquingcen, including his interim stints in the 2002 Governors and Commissioner’s Cups.

“Yes my lefties did everything right tonight. But I really felt all my players did a wonderful job. I thought we defended well early in the basketball game,” Alaska head coach Tim Cone said in the post-game conference.

Ellis finished with 17 points to lead the Aces which had all their 13 players breaking into the scoring column. Hugnatan added 13, Ferriols 12 and Miller 11 as Alaska’s five southpaws combined for 62 points, just six short of equaling the entire San Miguel Beer output.

The Beermen, who are down 0-2 in a best-of-7 series for the first time since the 2001 Commissioner’s Cup Finals against Red Bull, just couldn’t find their shots in the early goings, shooting just 24.3% from the field en route to being 20 down and scoring just 25 points at halftime.

“San Miguel always has one bad game once in a while and then they comeback strong and win the next three… four games. So that’s one bad game out of the way,” Cone said.

Only two players scored in double figures for San Miguel Beer with Galen Young and Rico Villanueva finishing with 20 and 16 points, respectively.

Alaska, which is eyeing its first Finals appearance in a regular conference since the 2002 Governors Cup and hasn’t won in an import-laden conference since the 1998 Commissioner’s Cup, will try to make it 3-0 on Sunday also at the Big Dome.

The 25-point margin of victory was the biggest for the Aces since their 102-72 rout of Barangay Ginebra last Oct. 19, 2005 in this very same conference last season. (DBC)

The scores:

Alaska 93 – Ellis 17, Hugnatan 13, Ferriols 12, Miller 11, Laure 9, Belasco 8, Cariaso 6, Thoss 4, Singson 4, Aban 3, Cortez 2, Bajar 2, Juinio 2.

San Miguel Beer 68 – Young 20, Villanueva 16, Ildefonso 8, Pena 6, Espinas 5, Gonzales 3, Cablay 3, Racela 3, Tenorio 2, Wilson 2, Adriano 0, Calaguio 0.

Quarterscores: 25-8, 45-25, 70-38, 93-68.

If the LA Tenorio and JJ Trade would happen this would be Ginebra's possible lineup.

Starting 5

C- Eric Menk
F- Raffy Reavis
F- Gabby Espinas
G- Mark Caguioa
G- LA Tenorio

Off the Bench

G- Ronald Tubid
F- Sunday Salvacion
F- Ken Bono
F- Mike Holper
C- Billy Mamaril
G- Jec Chia
G- Mark Macapagal

Coach: Jong Uichico
Asst: Siot Tanquincen, Pido Jarencio and Dudut Jaworski

This would be a great mix of young and veteran talent for our team.

If i was trying to save money but also keep my team around for the next decade, i would be willing to trade JJ Helterbrand for lets say LA Tenorio and Gabby Espinas and a high 1st rounder.

It helps the team alot more than trading JJ for LA
imagine having LA Tenorio and MC for the next 10years

Gabe Norwood could try the short cut route in making himself eligible in the rookie draft by commiting himself, of course with the help from RP team coaching staff's to represent the country in the Jones Cup as a regular member.

That way, even if he still havent played a single amateur game, he can be eligible.

Regarding my take on what position SMB needs to draft, i will go for a pure point guard.

Smb(coke) has 1 lottery ball vs 2 from Welcoat, & if ever Welcoat wins the lottery, they will surely draft a Big Man to help JR Reyes man the Frontline.

They are looking for either Ken Bono, Samigue Eman or Joe Devance.

Now SMB assuming they picks 2nd, they could go for a star PG in preparation on Olsen's retirement.

LA Tenorio needs a back court partner as Brandon Cablay is not a pure PG.
If Gabe Norwood become eligible & subsequently applies for the draft, i'm 100% sure that coach Chot Reyes will select him. He was the one who discovered anyway.

If not, then theres Filam Ryan Reyes or homegrown Jason Castro.

Smb could also draft the best talent available if Norwood didnt apply for the draft & that could be anyone Welcoat did not select from Ken Bono to Joe Devance & it could be a trade bait for a star PG from other teams.

Samigue Eman is out of SMB's equation as coach Chot Reyes doesn't like Eman's work ethic when he was invited to the National training Pool.

I've heard another Filam prospect Rob Reyes had no interest at all to apply for the draft.

Earlier today, i met mega agent Danny Espiritu in Glorietta. He had a meeting with 1 Fil-Canadian guard who wants to enter the draft. I saw him, he's not that big. Maybe 5-10 or 5-11.

SMB will surely trade 1 to 3 players after this conference to have roster space availble when DS,DH & LT returns to active duty.

This will be a great turn of events for PBA and San Miguel Beermen.

1. Joe Devance (Welcoat Dragons)

Height: 6-7
DOB: Circa 1983
College: University of El Paso Texas
Amateur Team: Toyota Balintawak
Awards: 2005 PBL Most Valuable Player of the Year, PBL Mythical 5 members (2)

Last year he could have been the top overall pick if he already completes all the major requirements in his citizenship issue. The 6-7 Devance is a former PBL Most Valuable Player Devance is average 15.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in his last PBL Stint in 2005-06 Seasons. I think Welcoat in order to booster their frontline will select Devance in this year’s draft he will give the young Welcoat franchise some scoring in the low posts and help Jay R Reyes in his rebounding choirs.

Best Case Scenario: Paul ASI Taulava, Ali Peek

Mid Case Scenario: Dorian Pena

the 2006 UAAP Most Valuable player and 1st team Mythical member Ken Bono 6-6 Montana / Adamson. Bono is undeniably, the UAAP's top big man currently. He has great shooting touch that reminds you of Jun Limpot but has the size and the body to bang against anybody. He also reminded us of a young Eric Menk in his PBL Days. The Current UAAP MVP of Season 69 has declare his intention to enter this years PBA Draft.

Height: 6-2
Weight: 180 lbs
Team: Henkel Sista
Age: 23 yrs.old
Amateur Team: Henkel Sista
Awards: 2007 PBL Mythical 5 members (2)

Reyes is the first rookie to submit his resume before the deadline, they might have selected Reyes 1st first overall in this years draft if big men Ken Bono and Joe Devance will not submit their resume. SMB is in love with Reyes' game - no-nonsense, Court general, loves the dirty work inside and has full of energy, something their current big men lacks. Ryan Reyes is a very special player that has the potential to be one of the best point guards ever, and he captured the nation’s attention as a Rookie when he led Henkel Sista to the Semi Finals of the PBL Tournament.

He has since helped his stock even more. His extreme quickness and slick handle combine to make him possibly the hardest point guard in the country for defenders to stay in front of. He is an unselfish player and gifted passer that drops dimes that no one in the gym sees coming. He is one of the most entertaining players anywhere, because not only is he a slick ball handler and passer, but he has world class hops and the ability to beat his man off the dribble, get into the lane, rise above the opposing forward (and center) and throw down a nasty one-handed-flush that he had cocked back to the moon. You wouldn’t expect to see something like that from a kid as skinny as him, but Reyes plays without fear, and with a lot of swagger.

He is a southpaw with a good outside shot, but played with a pass-first mentality on his arsenal.

Talk about “sky is the limit”.

The 2007 PBL MVP one of the best combo guard in the NCAA and PBL would be an excellent pick for the young and upcoming Air 21 Express with Winnie Arboleda on the backcourt this will be an excellent run and gun team. With Jason Castro and Chico Lanete producing numbers befitting their status and Ryan Arana providing the needed firepower, the Batang Pier etched their names in the history books when they overpowered Cebuana Lhuillier Pera Padala, 90-75 and completed a swept of the PBL Unity Cup at the Olivarez Sports Center.

6.Jonas Villanueva (SLR) - Jonas Villanueva 6-0 Magnolia / Far Eastern University. Villanueva has the size and the skills to be an excellent pro. He showed his capability in the current UAAP season heading the Tamaraws' charge with only Chan and a bunch of newcomers. I think that with the departure of Alex Cabagnot and Kenneth Duremdes , I think the management realize that by picking Jonas Villanueva would be a suitable replacement for Alex Cabagnot.

Alaska is in need of a young PG that will complement Mike Cortez, we might see the 2nd coming of the Flying an in Marvin Cruz who is probably the best PG in the Amateur now. He is now one of the corner stone of the RP Harbour Team which won the 2007 SEABA Championship. In his last UAAP Stint Cruz average, 16.8 Points, 7.9 rebs, 0.2 Blks and 1.8 steals. 10. JC Intal (Air 21) - JC Intal 6-4 Harbour Centre / Ateneo. Intal is a high-flyer and made fame after defeating Nino Canaleta in a dunkoff in the PBL All-Stars. 10. Ryan Arana - a great slasher and a scorer this DLSU Greenarchers will probably one of these years steal of the draft. He shows that he can score as he pumps a career best 38 points against the weary Vietnam National Team.

11.Reed Juntilla- - Reed Juntilla- 6-1 Dazz Sing Patak / Mapua. Reed proved in the NCAA's and in the last PBL Cup that he's ripe for the pros. He has the size and the composure to play at 1. He has great tenacity and a winning attitude. Reminds you of Jeffrey Cariaso. Cone will be thrilled to have him.

PBL Stats.

15. 58 PPG, 3.42 RPG, 3.2 APG

12.Patrick Cabahug – a 6-2 scorer from Adamson University another player who can shoots from the outside and slash in the inside. He reminded me of a young Boy Cabahug and Al Solis.

13.Samigue Eman - 6-10 Rain or Shine / University of Mindanao. He was the BIG Ticket Eman is a project but has the best upside among all players in this list.. I think a great coach and a great system will help him to be able to improve his basketball skills.

14.Mark Borboran- he could have been included in the 1st round of the PBA draft but with the over flowing of the talent in this years draft. He could have been an easy 1st round pick in 2005 or 2007. Anyway the team that will pick him will be lucky enough the 6-2 Mark Borboran is a complete player and a decent defensive specialist. Borboran is the reigning PBL Rookie of the Year.

15.Bonifacio Custodio- another player who should have been included in the 1st round of these years 2007 Annual Draft. But like I said in my post about Mark Borboran we have a talent influx this year. Bonbon the 5-11 Gunner from Recto has his best year in the UAAP averaging 16.4 Points in 12 games. He is also a valuable asset to his team in the PBL. Custodio reminds us of a younger version of Vergel Meneses both are a great scorer and defender.

16. Edwin Asoro – the NU Bulldogs top scorer will be a great addition to the team that will select him. He average 15.6 Points in his last years UAAP Season 69. His Body is pro material; remind me of a younger version of Nelson Asaytono in terms of physical strength in the low post.

17. Jonathan Fernandez – 1/2 of the Dynamic NU Duo who is probably the pure scorer among this years draft with 15 PPG. Fernandez will be a great addition to any teams here in the PBA.

18. Nestor David- a 6-3 forward from the UP Fighting Maroons. He averages 11.8 Points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists. In his last UAAP tenure and is a Mythical 2nd team member in the PBL.

TUTOR & STUDENT FACE OFF IN FIESTA CONFERENCE FINALS

“Excited ako makalaban ang idol kong si Willie Miller” – Cardona

Thursday, 05 July 2007

Time was when Willie Miller and MacMac Cardona would spend time working on some plays together when the former De La Salle stalwart was still trying to find his way around in the Philippine Basketball Association.

A year later, Miller and Cardona find themselves headed for a great showdown as Alaska and Talk N Text clash in the Finals of the season-ending PBA Fiesta Conference.

The anticipated matchup between two of the league's most explosive guards and leading candidates for the Best Player of the Conference award will be among the highlights on Friday when Game 1 of the best-of-seven title series is played at the Araneta Coliseum.

Funny, but neither of the two stars would have imagined that they would be up against each other in the championship a couple of seasons ago. Back then, they were both donning the yellow-and-blue jerseys of the Talk N Text Phone Pals with Miller tasked to guide Cardona – then a rookie - under his wings.

But fate had something in store for them.

Miller along with forward John Ferriols were traded by the Phone Pals to the Alaska Aces for forward Don Allado and a future draft pick in the summer of 2006 while Cardona slowly blossomed into a certified league superstar on his sophomore year.

As the last two teams standing head for center stage, Cardona admitted he's thrilled no end at the prospect of going up against Miller one-on-one.

"Sobrang excited na ko dahil first time ko ito sa Finals. At the same time, makakalaban ko `yung idol kong si Willie Miller," proclaimed the 6-foot-1 guard dubbed as “Captain Hook.”

Miller, who won two championships with Red Bull and the MVP in 2002, downplays Cardona's insinuation that he idolizes him, although he did remember the time when the Phone Pals guard was still learning the ropes under him.

"Dati kasi sa Talk N Text kami yung nagbabantayan. Ako yung tutor dati tapos siya yung sumusunod sa akin. Ako lagi yung nagsasabi sa kanya ng plays namin.

"Pero sa laro ako yung tinuturuan niya ng hook shot kung papano gawin, " Miller said, referring to Cardona's unorthodox trademark shot.

The demanding task of taking on Cardona at the defensive end loomed for Miller after veteran Jeffrey Cariaso, Alaska's best perimeter defender, hyperextended his calf muscle and won't be able to play at least in the first two games of the title series.

Miller, though, wouldn't comment on his assignment and neither would Alaska coach Tim Cone.

"Without a doubt Jeffrey (Cariaso) is a very experienced defender. He's guarded big time scorers, he's guarded imports throughout his career. Obviously he would be our no. 1 choice to defend MacMac.

"But we just have to get someone else to step up and do that. We haven't decided yet who's gonna do that," the American mentor said.

Whoever that may be will definitely have his hands full.

In the absence of their three stars – Jimmy Alapag, Asi Taulava and Renren Ritualo – are serving the RP Team that is trying to clinch a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Cardona has assumed the role as the team's go-to guy, more so during the Phone Pals' semifinal playoffs against deposed champion Red Bull.

During that series, Cardona averaged 27.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting from the field. He even recorded a new career-high 38 points in the series clinching Game 6 win.

That easily made him a hot favorite for the Best Player of the Conference plum and perhaps, a first ever Mythical team selection in the league.

Still, Cone doesn't believe the Finals would come down to a “Macmac Cardona Show,”stressing that everything will boil down on what "the five guys on the floor could do."

The Alaska coach, however, can't deny that Cardona will be a marked man this coming championship series.

And, yes, Miller will definitely have his eyes on Cardona. (DBC)

Mac Cardona lead the BPC Race

Showdown between lead star and former understudy

By Noli Cortez, Malaya Online Edition
July 5, 2007

Stressing team play has always been Willie Miller's strong suit. Things will not be different when Miller and the Aces face the Talk N Text Phone Pals for the Fiesta Cup title in a best-of-seven championship series starting tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.

Even with the prospects of earning his second Best Player of the Conference a distinct possibility, the former league MVP is more concerned in helping the Aces cop the title.

"Kung darating iyun (BPC award), okay. Kung hindi naman, okay din, basta manalo kami ng championship," Miller told Malaya yesterday.

While Miller has been steady for the Aces, he has yet to flash his old fiery form. That is a must now, especially since the Aces are ranged against an equally formidable crew in the Phone Pals bannered by red-hot Mark Cardona.

Cardona has blossomed into the Phone Pals' go-to guy in the absence of TNT stars Asi Taulava, Jimmy Alapag and Ren-Ren Ritualo, who are on loan to the national team.

Cardona, who was the understudy of Miller while they were still playing together at the Manny Pangilinan franchise, shone best during the Phone Pals' semifinal playoffs against last year's champion Red Bull, averaging 27.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting from the field, including a new career high 38-point explosion in the 122-110 Game 6 clincher.

In contrast, Miller only averaged 12.7 points in their semis duel with San Miguel Beer, on top of 2.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

With those numbers, Willier, the BPC race leader after the eliminations, was relegated to fifth place after the semis with 29.9 statistical points, way below Cardona's front-running 32.3 SPs.

Vaulting into second is Purefoods' James Yap (32.1), followed by Sta. Lucia Realty's Kelly Williams (31.4) and Air21's Gary David (31.1).

Rounding up the Top 10 are SMB's Danny Ildefonso (28.0, Air21's Mark Telan (26.9), Ginebra's Ronald Tubid (26.8), Air21's Arwind Santos (26.3) and TNT's Jay Washington (25.8).

Only the top five candidates are eligible for the BPC award, with the votes coming from representatives of the teams, Commissioner's Office and the media.

In the past, the usual practice is for only the top three to be considered but this may change since Purefoods, Sta. Lucia and Air21 failed to reach the semifinals.

Miller has a good chance of adding on to his first BPC award in the 2005 Fiesta Cup, which will also boost the odds in his bid to bag a second MVP after his first in 2002.

For Miller, however, the title is still the biggest thing up for grabs in the title series.

"Mas hindi nakakasawa ang championship," said Miller, who has already won two titles with Red Bull. "Isa pa, para sa buong team ang championship."

The Red Bull Barakos closed out their season the way coach Yeng Guiao hoped it would as a form of consolation.

Red Bull survived a fiery charged by San Miguel Beer at the end of the third quarter then turned to Cyrus Baguio for the finishing touches as the deposed champions dealt the Beermen a 103-96 decision Friday night to salvage third place in the 2007 Talk

Tax cut and earnings of the games.

How Much are Imports Salary?
I don't know either. I think its a per games salary.

How much is the Max Salary for local players?
I'm not sure, but I think Danny Ildefonso earns around P300k a month.

1.By ticket sales sponsors, TV share which is why the PBA wants its own arena.

2.Imports get paid around $8k-10 for there stay here(2months) it used to be 15K I think but they reduced it.

3.Asi was making 500k before but i think there is a cap already

4. Harbour City has petitioned itself for entry next year.

Macmac Cardona delivered in the clutch when Alaska threatened in the second half enabling the Talk N Text Phone Pals to post a 120-113 victory in Game 2 Sunday and even their titular series at one game apiece.

The sophomore guard was at his deadliest in the third quarter, banging in 12 points, scoring each time when the Aces seemed to be building momentum.

MILLER LEADS 2006-07 MVP DERBY

Season’s top performers honored on Friday

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s170/Legend_Stopper/2007-07-10_MILLER_2109.jpg

Tuesday, 10 July 2007

Since being dealt to Alaska in the summer of 2006, Willie Miller's game has tremendously soared this season, making him a strong candidate to clinch his second Philippine Basketball Association Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy.

The flamboyant guard – winner of the coveted award in 2002 and a big reason why the Aces are in the Finals of the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference – leads five other players in hot pursuit of the league's highest individual honor.

The charismatic Miller, traded along with forward John Ferriols to Alaska by Talk N Text in exchange for Don Allado and a first round draft pick, leads the list of MVP contenders that also includes Sta. Lucia rookie Kelly Williams, the Air21 pair of Arwind Santos and Gary David, last year's winner James Yap of Purefoods and Talk N Text’s Mark Cardona.

The league will announce the 2006-07 MVP before Friday's Game 4 of the Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference Finals between Alaska and Talk N Text when it holds its Annual Awards Night to honor the best and the brightest in the PBA's 32nd season.

"This is the time of the year when the PBA honors the best players who shone brightest in the season that is coming to an end," said league commissioner Noli Eala.

Miller was named league MVP in 2002 while he was still with Red Bull, the same team that made him the top overall pick in the 2001 Annual Draft.

Should either Miller or Yap clinch the coveted award, they will join the group of Ramon Fernandez, Alvin Patrimonio, William Adornado, Alberto Guidaben, Benjie Paras and Danny Ildefonso as among the few select players to have won the coveted award more than once.

Interestingly, Miller and Cardona, the rising second-year star who had his breakthrough career this year with the Phone Pals, are hotly contesting the Best Player of the Conference plum to be awarded before Game 3 of the Finals.

Miller and Cardona are also showing the way for possible spots in the Mythical Team selection together with Williams, David, Yap, Santos , Wynne Arboleda, Alex Cabagnot, John Arigo, Jeffrey Cariaso, Ali Peek, Jay-R Reyes, Eric Menk, Yancy de Ocampo, Dorian Pena, Jay Washington, Harvey Carey, Mark Telan, Nic Belasco and Ildefonso.

Williams, the No. 1 pick in the last PBA Draft, is also in top contention for the Rookie of the Year title which he will dispute with Santos, Reyes, San Miguel's LA Tenorio and Welcoat's JunJun Cabatu.

Cardona, who blossomed into a certified star in the absence of Asi Taulava, Renren Ritualo and Jimmy Alapag who are serving the RP Team, heads the Most Improved Player's list that also includes David, Red Bull's Carlo Sharma, Purefoods' Peter Jun Simon, Sonny Thoss of Alaska and Ginebra's Ronald Tubid.

Other awards up for grabs are spots on the All-Defensive Team and the Sportsmanship Trophy.

Perennial members Johnny Abarrientos, Jeffrey Cariaso, Enrico Villanueva and Junthy Valenzuela lead 23 others vying for berths in the All-Defensive Team while Cyrus Baguio, Larry Fonacier, Nelbert Omolon, James Yap, Miller, Thoss, David and Simon are the prime candidates for the Sportsmanship Award. My Suggestion on how the PBA Board Awards the players in the Big league.

I think some of us know that our beloved Mark Caguioa has no chance of winning the 2007 MVP Award because he missed the whole 2nd conference not to point that in our topic pero anu ba dapat ang tamang criteria sa pagselect ng MVP, Rookie of the Year, Mythical 5, All Defensive Team, Defensive player of the Year, Mythical Team, Most Improved and 6th man of the Year.

Eto lang po yung suggestion ng iyong abang lingkod na si Lebron23

Lets go first to the MVP Awards.

Who have been the best players in the PBA thus far? There are several different ways you could answer that. It's all subjective, but to help you out, we've compiled the top 10 players when it comes to PRA, the sum of your points, rebounds and assists per game.

In order to compare the raw stats with how these players affect the score of the game, we also show their Lenovo Stat, along with their league Lenovo rank.

Dapat ganyan sa tingin ko naman eh nung 2003-04 pa Deserving na mag MVP si Mark Caguioa ksi naman eh nag lead siya sa scoring, decent rebounder and assists man.

2. Rookie of the year- I think we must base the individual performance of a Rookie instead of his team success meron na kasi mga players na hinde naging Rookie of the Year dahil yung team nila eh bumagsak.

kagaya na lang nung 1992 ng tinalo ni Bong Ravena ng SMB si Vergel Meneses pero Meneses is averaging 17.7 PPG.

Vergel Meneses was the top pick in the 1992 PBA draft taken in by the Presto Ice Cream (formerly Great Taste Coffee) franchise. At Presto, he played alongside 1990 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Allan Caidic, Chairman of the Board Abe King, many-time Mythical Team member Manuel Victorino and the late 1979 Rookie of the Year (ROY) and Mythical Five Member Arnulfo "Arnie" Tuadles. He averaged 17.7 ppg, 1.6 apg and 2.2 rpg in 39 games during his rookie year but he lost the ROY award to bossom buddy, Ferdinand "Bong" Ravena. But everybody understood that it was simply bacause Ravena's team, San Miguel Beer, had a lot more success than Meneses' Presto team. However, he was named to the All-Star team for the year and also won the first of his back-to-back Slam Dunk trophies.

I do not agree that the factor of a team success would hindrance an individual from winning an award that he deserve.

3. Mythical 10- I think the Mythical team must base their awards at the stats of the player and the impact of the player in the league.

Sana rin per position talaga ang botohan and hinde yung mga players na nag adjust ng position for example Egay Echavez na natural PG pero naka 2 ang nilalaro position

C-
F
F-
F-
G

Sa Mythical 5 naman sana yung 2 Best Player of the Conference eh meron automatic slot sa Mythical 5 at yung mismong position niya dapat ang nakalagay dun ng hinde na tayo magkaroon ng mga tainted MVP.

4. Defensive Player of the Year- I think defensive player of the year must be base on the stats of certain players in the league like the League leading in BLocks Per game and Steals Per game, Sana makita din natin ang kaibahan ng great defender sa isang flopper or player who fake a charge na halata halata naman.

Meron isang tao diyan na nagsabi na ang Steals eh hinde part ng depensa because it is very risky hinde lang siya sanay magbasketball but Steals are important in the game than flopping around.

5. Most Improve Player - This award should be give to players who have a major contributions in their team by virtue of a improving his stats and this player just excel in the different aspect of the game.

6. 6th Man of the Year- Player who came off the Bench and contribute saka check din natin kung lagi nga siyang off the bench and hinde nag start this season.

7. Comeback player of the Year- This award must be give to a player who have a leave of Absent in the PBA one or more Seasons.

For Example

Rudy Hatfield cameback after a 2 yr. hiatus so deserving siya sa award na ito.

Samboy Lim- After his Knee Surgery eh nakabalik muli siya and pang ALL STAR Caliber ang laro niya.

8. Sporstmanship Award- Gentleman on and off the Court.

Any Comments feel to add.

Thanks ;)

TALK N TEXT IN COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN, MOVES AHEAD 2-1

Aces vow to bounce back in Game 4

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s170/Legend_Stopper/CardonaPango.jpg

Thursday, 12 July 2007

What a night for Mark Cardona!

Mark Cardona came to receive the Best Player of the Conference award and then helped Talk N Text pull off a classic act to surge ahead versus Alaska in their title showdown.

Cardona delivered his valedictory address in the form of a 20-point game and the Pals completed his day, hacking out a come-from-behind 95-87 victory that pushed them 2-1 ahead in the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven Finals Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Pals came out flat but made a big turnaround in the second half, overcoming a 23-point deficit early on.

Talk N Text coach Derick Pumaren believes the tongue-lashing he gave his troops at halftime helped them win the contest.

"I was really pissed and fuming mad at halftime. Alaska showed they really wanted to win and we were not showing any resistance. I’m proud how the boys responded," said Pumaren.

"I told the boys we have 24 minutes to turn it around. They did it in 12 minutes," Pumaren added.

James Sullinger scored 12 of his 30 points in the third quarter with Felix Belano and Yancy de Ocampo adding six and five, respectively, as the Pals made a big run to overhaul a 40-56 halftime deficit.

Down by only one, 67-68, at the end of the third, the Pals sustained their charge in the payoff period as they duplicated the Aces’ Game One victory.

"They turned things on us. They did a good job of coming back and not quitting," said Alaska coach Tim Cone.

"We missed two gimmes and two free throws at the start of the third and that became the turning point. That started their run and that hurt us," Cone added.

Cone, however, made an assurance they would learn from their mistakes and they would come back in Game Four Friday in the same venue.

Trailing most of the way, the Pals surged ahead for the first time at 75-74 on a teardrop shop by Cardona with 7:17 left to play.

Cardona would score six straight points later on, then Belano followed those up with a trey as Talk N Text all but settled the outcome of the game at 92-83.

"I talked to Macmac at the half. I pointed out to him that he’s being terribly outplayed by Willie Miller. He’d just beaten Miller for the Best Player of the Conference honors and I told him he has to prove he deserves the award," said Pumaren.

Miller finished with a personal conference-high 29 points that went for naught.

Rosell Ellis came out strong, firing 19 points in the first half but added only three in the final half. (NC)

The scores

Talk N Text 95 – Sullinger 30, Cardona 20, Belano 14, Carey 11, Washington 9, De Ocampo 7, Allado 2, Pablo 2, Billones 0.

Alaska 87 – Miller 29, Ellis 22, Cortez 16, Hugnatan 7, Thoss 6, Belasco 4, Laure 2, Ferriols 1, Singson 0.

Quarterscores: 15-30, 40-56, 67-68, 95-87.

TALK N TEXT GOES FOR ALL THE MARBLES

Aces need Miller to show up to force Game 7

Wednesday, 18 July 2007
Derrick Pumaren said the PLDT franchise has long waited for this moment to come. And now that they're so close to making their dream come true, the Talk N Text coach proclaimed he'll not allow this opportunity to slip away.

The Phone Pals hold a 3-2 lad over the Alaska Aces in the best-of-seven Finals of the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference and could wrap the series up with another victory in Game 6 scheduled for 7 o'clock Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

"We've long waited for this (championship). Now that we're this close, we should take on the opportunity and not let it slip away," Pumaren said during the post-game interview that followed their 107-104 victory in Game 5 Sunday.

TNT won its first and only conference championship in 2003 by ruling the All-Filipino Cup. Since then the Phone Pals have never been this close to winning another championship.

"All we need is just one more win. I just hope the players have some energy left to get the job done," said Pumaren, seeking his third victory against Alaska coach Tim Cone in the Finals and his third PBA championship as bench tactician.

Pumaren won his first two championships with the now disbanded Sunkist Juicers and coincidentally, both had Alaska and Cone on the opposite end of the harcourt.

TNT import J.J. Sullinger said the team can accomplish the mission only if the Phone Pals continue to do the things that work for them.

"If we just do the things that we have to do and continue working as a team we can get the job done," said Sullinger, who has successfully outplayed Alaska import Rosell Ellis in the series.

Notwithstanding the tremendous challenge confronting his team, Cone isn't ready to give up the fight.

But he also acknowledges that for Alaska to force a deciding seventh game, the Aces will need a standout effort from his backcourt, particularly from Willie Miller

FedEx Express

Meneses was traded in 2002 from Ginebra to rookie team FedEx Express for a future draft pick. His career reemerged during his two year stay with the team. At the Express team, he was reunited with old coach Derrick Pumaren, his coach at Swift during their glory years in 1995. He again led the team in scoring with 14.2 ppg (15 games) on the way to a season average of 12.4 ppg, 1.9 apg and 2.6 rpg in 22 games (combined average while playing for FedEx and Ginebra), his second lowest scoring averages. He was also named the Player of the Week (POW) for the period July 29 – August 4, 2002.

In 2003, he was named to the PBL’s Top 20 Players for his exploits at Magnolia, Burger City and Swift Hotdogs. He was also a three-time recipient of the POW award, for the periods March 10-16, 2003, March 17-23, 2003 and April 14-20, 2003. He also became the first local player in 2 years to score at least 20 points in a quarter when he scored 20 points in the 3rd quarter of FedEx victory over Ginebra. Meneses was voted into his 9th All-Star game where he was named as the All-Star MVP in 2003, his 4th overall, and also led the Express to a third-place finish in the 2003 PBA Invitationals. He was also the first recipient of the Sportsman of the Year award together with Benjie Paras and Rob Johnson.

He also became a sort of a 3rd-quarter man for the FedEx team as he scored: (a) 15 points vs. San Miguel Beer on April 16, 2003, (b) 16 points against Red Bull on April 27, 2003, (c) 20 points contra Ginebra on May 02, 2003, (d) 12 points opposite Talk 'N Text on May 09, 2003 and (e) 19 points for the Commissioners All-Stars versus the Governors All-Stars in the June 01, 2003 All-Star game.

He finished the year as the Express scoring leader and the league's 8th leading scorer with an average of 15.9 ppg in nearly an average of 30 minutes playing time. He added 3.0 apg and 2.8 rpg for the season and saw him reached the 2,000 assists club, the 19th player to do so.

2004 saw him reached the 9,000-point plateau. He also made his 10th All-Star appearance during the year becoming the North team’s leading vote-getter as well as the 2nd leading vote-getter for the All-Star festivities behind Danny Seigle. By making it to his 10th All-Star, he became only the third player with at least 10 appearances in the mid-year festivities after Jerry Codi

Cellar dwellers field 2 imports in next Fiesta Cup

The Philippine Basketball Association is again applying a handicapping scheme in the import-reinforced tourney next year in a bid to keep balance in the competition.

The last two teams after the elimination round of the All-Filipino tourney will be allowed to field two imports in the Fiesta Conference with one standing 6-foot-1 or below. The rest of the teams will be allowed just an import with no height restriction.

This was approved by the PBA board of governors in a meeting yesterday at Chateu 1771 in Ortigas Center in Pasig.

Remaining in the drawing board is the proposed amendment to the controversial "Restricted Trade List." The teams couldn't reach an agreement and decided to make further discussion in their next meeting.

But giants like Julius Nwosu are allowed to be back in the local pro league in the next Fiesta Cup with the board deciding to put away height restriction on imports.

The return of seven-footers could well help PBA players familiarize themselves with international play.

The handicap scheme, meanwhile, opens the door for another stint by Alex Compton with Welcoat, in case the Dragons fail to make it to the top eight in the All-Filipino elims.

WELCOAT IN NO HURRY TO DECIDE ON NO. 1 OVERALL PICK

Eman, Bono, Devance, Intal head rich rookie talent pool

Tuesday, 24 July 2007
IT'S a major dilemma Welcoat Paints coach Leo Austria doesn't mind facing time and time again.

With the Paint Masters earning the right to select first in the coming 2007 PBA Rookie Draft, on the hands of Austria belongs the envious task of choosing the No. 1 overall pick in a 47-man field rich in talent and potential.
Fil-Am big man Joe Devance and Ateneo Blue Eagles stalwart John Christopher Intal are those athletic types currently in the Draft list. Both are coming off spectacular seasons in the amateurs.

Intal, the reed-thin, slam-dunking forward, was a key player of the Harbour Centre team that swept Cebuana Lhuillier in the PBL Unity Cup Finals and also the main man of the ill-fated Blue Eagles squad that lost a deciding Game 3 to the University of Santo Tomas Tigers for last year's UAAP men's basketball championship.

The application of Devance however remains conditional pending his submission of a confirmation from the Department of Justice until the end of the month.

The 6-foot-5 center was adjudged the 2006 PBL Unity Cup MVP after leading Toyota Balintawak to a runner up finish behind Harbour Centre. Upon his return to the team last conference, the Road Kings made it all the way to the semifinals.

A slew of big men are also making themselves available for this year's Rookie Draft, including bullstrong University of the Visayas power forward JR Quinahan of Burger King, Doug Kramer of Ateneo and San Beda's Yousif Aljamal.

Others in the mix include controversial Santo Tomas guard Jojo Duncil, guard Ryan Reyes of Henkel Sista, Toyota Balintawak premiere playmaker, Dazz
guard Reed Juntilla, Cebuana Lhuillier's Macky Escalona, Ryan Arana of Harbour Centre, University of the East's Rolly Masbang, Frederick Hubalde of Santo Tomas, St. Benilde's Rolly Menor and former Adamson Falcon Melvin Mamaclay.

One who easily catches attention by way of his resume is guard Daryl Pepito, a 5-foot-10 playmaker born in Quezon City but is based in Australia where he plays for St. Edwards College and saw action in the Australian Basketball League.

Last year Sta. Lucia Realty tabbed Fil-Am forward Kelly Williams as the top overall pick. (DBC)

Welcoat eyes Intal as first draft pick

By Waylon Galvez

WELCOAT PAINTS, which owns the luxury of picking first in the PBA Rookie Draft next month, is likely to go for height and glamour.

Actually, the Dragons already have a short list. And this includes JC Intal, a 6-foot-4 wingman who, with his athleticism and scoring ability, can give the Dragons the kind of go-to-guy type of player they lacked during their maiden campaign last season.

Welcoat, which finished last in both conferences during the previous season, owns the top overall pick in the PBA Annual Rookie Draft scheduled Aug. 19 at the Market! Market! in Taguig.

Raymund Yu, who co-owns the team together with Terry Que, said that Intal has the quickness and leaping ability to compete in the PBA.

Fonacier to join Ateneo pals in SMB?

By Nelson Beltran
Thursday, July 26, 2007

Larry Fonacier is another former Ateneo Blue Eagle set to land at San Miguel Beer.

Reliable sources said San Miguel is in hot pursuit of the 2005-06 Rookie of the Year winner, offering Kiko Adriano, Brandon Cablay and Christian Calaguio as trade replacement to Red Bull.

If the deal is closed, Fonacier is joining at San Miguel former Ateneo teammates Enrico Villanueva, Wesley Gonzales and LA Tenorio. Veteran point guard Olsen Racela is another ex-Atenean on the team.

San Miguel acquired Villanueva in an earlier trade deal with Red Bull. Gonzales was taken in from Air21 and Tenorio from the 2006 Annual Rookie Draft.

Fonacier was among Red Bull players whose playing contract expired at the close of the 2007 PBA season.

Leo Najorda, Junthy Valenzuela, Mike Hrabak and Warren Ybanez all have been given fresh two-year contracts. Fonacier is likely to get his new contract with San Miguel.

Meanwhile, Ranidel de Ocampo signed a P12.6-million, three-year contract extension with Air21 before joining the RP team in its departure for Tokushima, Japan.

The 6-foot-6 center-forward is guaranteed a maximum pay of P350,000 a month up to 2010.

June Peter Simon is close to sealing a contract-extension with Purefoods.

At Talk n Text, Macmac Cardona is also looking for contract extension this early although his existing pact is alive until next year.

Noli Eala quits as PBA commissioner

MANILA, Philippines -- Making his announcement with a bleeding heart, Noli Eala on Tuesday tendered his "immediate resignation" as commissioner of Asia's first professional cage league, citing his love for family and the integrity of the league as reasons.
"To ease the pain of the people who matter most to me, my family and all of my children, and to shield the league I truly care for, I am today tendering my immediate resignation," Eala, his voice low and nearly cracking, read his statement before a packed press conference at the league's offices in Libis, Quezon City.

"It is a painful decision brought about by a painful personal circumstance, but I have always believed that the PBA is bigger than any one man, one team, one player or one team owner," he continued.

Eala's resignation came on the heels of an emergency board meeting Tuesday morning at a posh hotel in Mandaluyong, where members of the board, or their representatives, reportedly voted 6-3 to remove him.

A source who refused to be identified told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net, that Talk 'N Text, Red Bull, Alaska, Air21, Sta. Lucia and Coca-Cola voted to remove Eala, while San Miguel, Barangay Ginebra and Welcoat wanted him to stay.

Chair Ricky Vargas presided over the meeting and voted for Talk 'N Text.

Tony Chua, the incoming chairman, cast the vote for Red Bull, Joaqui Trillo represented Alaska with team owner Wilfred Steven Uytengsu present, Lito Alvarez was there for Air21, lawyer Ariel Magno represented Buddy Encarnado for Sta. Lucia and JB Baylon voted for Coca-Cola.

Ely Capacio was present for San Miguel, Robert Non for Barangay Ginebra and lawyer Mamerto Mondragon for Welcoat, which actually batted for Eala to stay even for just one more conference before stepping down.

A separate source said that, with the 2007 Draft scheduled for August 19, the board will likely tap someone who will perform Eala's erstwhile capacity in an interim manner.

The next season opens September 23 with "Super Sunday" where all 10 teams will play simultaneously in the country's three major islands.

Eala's resignation was the consequence of a disbarment ruling ordered by the Supreme Court Wednesday last week, which found the 44-year-old commissioner guilty of an "extramarital affair with a married woman."

"I leave the PBA cognizant and gratified that I have turned things around," Eala continued. "Though I believe in the biblical edict 'let he who is without sin cast the first stone,' I have decided to walk away keeping my dignity intact and my hopes still high."

Eala became the league's sixth commissioner at the end of the 2002 season after beating out Chito Narvasa, former Shell governor and chairman Rey Gamboa and former OIC and executive director Renauld "Sonny" Barrios.

Eala, who appealed "to allow me to deal with this personal ordeal [disbarment] privately," was responsible for the recovery of the league, which suffered through some of its lowest marks close to two years before taking over.

But there were also some black marks in his tenure, like the doping case that involved around 10 players and the Fil-American brouhaha where several foreign players were found to have carried spurious documents to play.

Several names have cropped up as a possible replacement, including four-time MVP Ramon Fernandez and former Senator Robert Jaworski, though they were not consensus picks of the board.

Saturday, 11 August 2007

Prospective No. 1 pick Samigue Eman leads 46 other aspirants display their wares and skills in the three-day PBA Rookie Camp set at the Moro Lorenzo gym beginning this Tuesday.

All 47hopefuls have been spread out into four teams that will play three games each from August 14 to 16.

Two games in the afternoon jumpstart the camp's playing schedule. The Red team takes on the Blue Team in the 1:30 p.m. opener followed by the 3 p.m. match pitting the White team against the Yellow team.

The Yellow squad boasts amateur stalwarts Ken Bono, JC Intal and Marvin Cruz while the frontcourt tandem of 6-foot-9 Eman, who many expect to land with Welcoat which holds the No.1 draft pick, and burly 6-foot-5 Yousif Aljamal spearhead the Blue Squad.

Brawny Cebuano cager JR Quinahan and playmaker Ryan Reyes banner the White team's campaign and the Red quintet will have for stalwarts Doug Kramer, Jeff Chan and prospective first No.2 pick Joe De Vance.

On Wednesday (August 15) at the Blue Eagle gym, Blue takes its turn against White at 4 p.m., after which Red battles Yellow at 5:30 p.m.

The final playdate also at the Blue Eagle gym will have Red clashing with White (4 p.m.) and Yellow meeting Blue (5:30 p.m.).

Ryan Arana, Joel Solis, Melvin Mamaclay, Joferson Gonzales, John Bombeo, Edilgusto Soriano, Khiel Misa, Chico Manabat and Chris Baluyot suit up for the Red team while Macky Escalona, Jojo Duncil, Jonas Villanueva, Ronnie Zagala, Francis Barcellano, Elbert Alberto, Jose Aquino, Alex Angeles, Godofredo Cuevas and Junjun Molina complete the Blue squad.

Others in the Yellow team are Reed Juntilla, Frederick Hubalde, Ramil Tagupa,

This is the original draft rankings of the 10 PBA teams:

2. Coke
3. SLR
4. Air21
5. PF
6. Alaska
7. Red Bull
8. TNT
9. Ginebra
10. SMB

Now, if we will apply those trades that happened in the past:

#2 pick will go to SMb on that Dale Singson trade 2 years ago.
#5 pick will go to Air21 on that Pingris trade.
#7 pick will go to Alaska on the Rich Alvarez trade.
#8 pick will go to Air21 on the Yancy De Ocampo trade.

Another bone of contention if Coke will get the #4 pick from Air21 also on that revised Ginebra/Air21/Coke trade last year.

Not yet final if Ginebra's pick will go to Coke on that infamous Reavis/Mamaril/Hatfield trade.

Another bone of contention if Coke will get the #4 pick from Air21 also on that revised Ginebra/Air21/Coke trade last year.

Also the #10 pick if it will be SMB's pick or will it go to Ginebra on the Adducul trade.

Until now, only the 1st 3 pick is Final.

Eman, Intal shine
in PBA Rookie Camp

http://www.malaya.com.ph/aug15/spor6.htm

POTENTIAL top draft picks Samigue Eman and JC Intal were among those who showcased excellent skills during the strength, agility and endurance tests that ushered in the three-day PBA Rookie Camp yesterday at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center.

Edilgusto Soriano, Alex Angeles, Donald Tadena, Daryl Pepito, Macky Escalano and Dom Javier also impressed scouts and coaches who were present, proving they have what it takes to join the pro bandwagon.

Eman, a prized recruit by Rain or Shine from the University of Mindanao, was measured tallest among all 47 applicants at 6-foot-8 while Ken Bono, a former UAAP MVP, was the heaviest at 104 kilograms. Eman also has the longest wingspan at 86.5 inches.

Soriano, a San Beda product, emerged as the best in bench press and push ups, doing 37 and 75 repetitions in separate tests, while Angeles, another Red Lion, was No. 1 in pull-ups with 23.

In the agility drill, Intal and Tadena of Rizal Technological U shared top honors with 4.72 seconds.

2007 PBA Pre-draft Camp (Day 1): Guards dominate play

In the first day of the rookie camp, a lot of eyes were glued on big men Joe Devance, Samigue Eman and Ken Bono. It was the play of guards Jojo Duncil, Jonas Villanueva, Dom Javier and Ardy Larong, however who made the difference as they led their respective teams to victories.

Ex-UST Tiger Jojo Duncil topscored a game-high 16 points while Villanueva contributed 11 points and 5 assists to lead the Coke-Blue team to a 63-52 win over the Welcoat-Red squad.

Noy Javier had an explosive day, firing away long range bombs en route to scoring 14 points, backed up by 2 boards, 1 dime and 1 steal while Larong had 12 points and 6 rebounds as Sta. Lucia-White team made mincemeat of the Air 21-Yellow

2007 PBA Rookie Draft Complete 1st/2nd Round Team Rankings + Camp Talks!!!

I have a fax copy coming from Chairman Tony Chua(Red Bull) of the PBA office this morning regarding the Complete 1st & 2nd round draft rankings. Here it is:

First Round:

1) Welcoat
2) SMB (from Coke)
3) SLR
4) Coke (from Air21 Hatfield,Reavis,Mamaril Trade)
5) Air21 (from Purefoods Pingris/Billones Trade)
6) Alaska
7) Alaska (from Red Bull Rich Alvarez Trade)
8) Air21 (fom TNT Ritualo Trade)
9) San Miguel
10) Coke (from Ginebra Hatfield,Reavis,Mamaril Trade) (Ginebra option either 2007 or 2008)

From what i gathered today, i was in the Rookie Camp, Air21 would like to get the #4 pick from Coke in exchange for Telan.

Second Round:

1) Air21 (from Coke Pacana Trade)(this could be shifted back to Coke as part of that agreement by Air21 getting the 4th pick+Telan)
2) Welcoat
3) SLR
4) Air21
5)Red Bull (from PF Camaso Trade) (Purefoods option 2007 or 2008)
6) Alaska
7) Red Bull
8)TNT
9) Red Bull (from SMB Tugade Trade)
10) Air21 (from Ginebra Tubid Trade)

Now, the concensus from the coaches & 2 mega agents i talked to earlier in the final day of the Rookie Camp, Samigue Eman is lucky to even make it to the Top 4!
Ryan Reyes is the most sought after player by almost all the teams. There were rumors that the Air21 asst coaches(they coached the White team of Ryan Reyes & JR Quinahan) is trying to hide Ryan Reyes by not fielding him longer as the team is planning to pick him at #4 if they succeed on getting the pick from Coke.

But Air21 will face some competition with SMB team, who is now seriously considering tapping the Fil-Am guard at #2. Other SMB prospects, JC Intal & Joe Devance. Coincidentally, Joe Devance would like to play for SMB. My friend, a host of an AM Radio Basketball show made an Interview with Devance & it will be aired tommorow Aug.17 at DZSR 918 at 10AM.

Welcoat is also seriously considering Joe Devance over Samigue Eman.

At 3rd, SLR, quietly looking at Ken Bono or Samigue Eman.

Then at 4th, if Air21 gets that pick, they will use it to tap Ryan Reyes & a bigman for the 5th pick.

Alaska is also deadset on Doug Kramer & Ryan Reyes.

JR Quinahan also passed the test with flying colors as he was the most consistent of all the Bigmen. Same goes with Yousef Aljamal. But he might drop late in the 1st round to early 2nd round. Reason? His height versus the position he plays.

JC Intal looks awesome, but the teams picking in the 1st half was loaded in the position he plays.

Daryl Pepito made that gutsy winning acrobatic driving layup in the middle with Joe Devance going for the block.

Regarding PBA rumors, all the teams tied to get/buy Ranidel De Ocampo from Air21, bidding went to P15 Million but Air21 said, NO Dice!

SMB wanted Arwind Santos but Air21 also declined.

Coke is looking to acquire Chris Calaguio from SMB since last year.

There's also some kind of Negotiation happening between Ginebra & Air21. Either player trades or Draft pick to be acquired by Ginebra in the 1st round.

QUINAHAN, REYES LEAD TEAM TO PERFECT SLATE IN ROOKIE CAMP

2007 Rookie Draft on Sunday, 4p.m. at Market! Market!

Saturday, 18 August 2007

The White team, led by Cebuano slotman JR Quinahan and guard Ryan Reyes, emerged the best performing team in the 2007 PBA Rookie Camp, completing a three-game sweep with a 57-55 squeaker over the Red team (1-2) at the close of the three-day session on Thursday at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym.

As in their 57-52 win over the Blue squad Wednesday, big men Quinahan and RJ Masbang carried much of the fight for White as they held their own against Red's solid frontcourt built around prospective top pick Joe DeVance.

Masbang scored a team-high 11 points while Quinahan produced eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a solid all-round game in 25 minutes of action.

DeVance, now the focus of attention by Welcoat which will select first in Sunday's Rookie Draft, led all scorers with 14 points and added seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal.

Red missed the services of Doug Kramer who suffered an injury against the Yellow team Wednesday.

San Beda workhorse Yousif Aljamal had another sterling performance while guard Ronnie Zagala came through with clutch plays as Blue (2-1) toppled Yellow, 62-55, in the other game sponsored by Accel and Viva Mineral Water.

Zagala went 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the stripe for 14 points while Aljamal logged eight points and the same number of rebounds sending the Yellow team of JC Intal and Ken Bono reeling to a third loss in as many games.

Samigue Eman, another player being considered by Welcoat to be the first pick overall, managed just six points and three rebounds for Yellow (0-3).

Intal finally produced significant numbers with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists to no avail. Bono added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Venancio Johnson " Benjie" Paras

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s170/Legend_Stopper/benjie_03.jpg

There are those who will dispute his first MVP award in 1989, the year San Miguel won a grand slam. In fact, even Norman Black found it funny that the MVP during the triple crown year did not come from the team that accomplished the feat. But what is non-debatable is the fact that Paras is the only player to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season. But his real claim to greatness is his heartwarming comeback story from his self-inflicted downfall. Coaxing himself out of a shell of his self-contentment, Paras won yet another MVP award, 10 Years after the first one launched him to superstardom. And that MVP trophy came in the year when several talented half-Filipinos threatened to duplicate his feat as top Rookie-MVP awardee. The way he defended his sacred space in the record books was truly an inspiring story.

Mark Anthony Caguioa (born on November 19, 1979 in San Juan, Metro Manila, Philippines) is a Filipino professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He plays for the Barangay Ginebra Kings, although he is currently on leave from the team due to his playing commitments to the Philippine national team. Known by many as The Spark, he is also known, along with backcourt tandem Jayjay Helterbrand, as one-half of the so-called, The Fast and the Furious.

Collegiate career

Although born and raised in the Philippines, Caguioa spent his adolescent days in the United States and played collegiate ball at the Glendale Community College in California. He was named into the First-Team All-Western State Conference honors in the 1999-2000 season.

PBA career

In 2001, as a virtual unknown in Philippine basketball scene, he was drafted by the Barangay Ginebra Kings as the 3rd overall pick. Expectations were not high as Caguioa started as role player and reliever to Vergel Meneses. However, after showing strong performances and leading the Kings to the All-Filipino finals, he became very popular. With his killer cross-overs, slashing drives to the basket, and penchant for making clutch plays, Caguioa earned the respect and admiration of Filipino basketball fans. His exciting brand of play earned him the monicker "The Spark". At the end of the season, Caguioa is the 3rd Ginebra player since Dondon Ampalayo in 1986 and Marlou Aquino in 1996 to win the Rookie of the Year award.

In the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Caguioa had good performances but the Kings were unable to get past the quarterfinals.

In the 2004-2005 season, Caguioa along with the comebacking Jayjay Helterbrand, formed a strong backcourt tandem, which ABC Sports later dubbed as the "Fast and the Furious". Their tandem enabled Ginebra to win back-to-back championships. Caguioa also set his career high during this season, scoring 43 points in Game 4 of the Philippine Cup Finals against the Talk N Text Phone Pals.

Caguioa had 4 chances to become MVP:

He was among the leading players for 2004 Fiesta Conference and Philippine Cup best player, but lost in the media voting twice to fellow Ginebra teammate Eric Menk. His "bad boy" image was apparently disliked by the media.
His output of 36 points in the 2004 All-Star Game would have won him the All-Star MVP, but the South All-Stars led by Asi Taulava and Jimmy Alapag stole the show.
Caguioa was also the statistical leader for season MVP in 2005 [1], but lost again to Eric Menk in the media voting.
In the 2006 Philippine Cup, Caguioa is still showing brilliance in his game earning Player of the Week honors thrice, becoming the league's leading scorer at 24 points a game, breaking his previous career high by scoring 45 pts despite losing to Red Bull in quarterfinals. He became the first guard ever to finished a single season as the league's leading scorer in the 21st Century (since Allan Caidic in 1995).

Currently, in the 2007 Philippine Cup, Caguioa is averaging 24.7 PPG in the 23 games he is currently playing in the said tournament. He also lead the league in Statistical Points for the Best Player of the Conference Awards. Ginebra is currently leading the series 3-2 in the best-of-seven semifinal series with the Talk N Text Phone Pals. During the series, Caguioa scored 34,31,26,35 and 31 pts. respectively with a 31.4 point clip. Mark Caguioa won the 2007 PBA Best Player of the Conference.

He was healing with a shoulder injury after the FIBA-Asia Championship held at Tokushima where the team SMC-Pilipinas ranked 9th overall.

National team

Caguioa was named in the RP Training Pool for future international competitions. He has participated in several exhibition games against the Iranian National team and the NBL team Sydney Kings in mid-2005, where he impressed the latter team's coach by scoring 27 pts. in the said game. [2] [3] He has also played in the 2005 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup held in the Philippines, in which they finished 5th in the event.

However, Caguioa was eventually left out of the team for the past few months. It was due to national mentor Chot Reyes' claim that Caguioa has failed to appear in several practice sessions.

He is currently a member of the Philippine national team that will compete in the Southeast Asia Basketball Association Championship and FIBA Asia Championship.

Controversy

A mini-controversy happened in 2005 when he spoke a Filipino vulgar word during a live interview of a game between Caguioa's team against the Sta. Lucia Realtors. He didn't receive any form of punishment from the PBA for his comments.
Caguioa once had a rivalry with then-Sta. Lucia player Alex Cabagnot, who now plays for the Coca-Cola Tigers. It was mainly because Cabagnot broke Caguioa's scoring records at Eagle Rock High School. They had several episodes of commentaries regarding each other in interviews, and were seen trash talking in camera during their first two encounters. The rivalry apparently cooled off as Cabagnot failed to live up to everyone's expectations. [4]
Aside from being left out of the national team, Caguioa was recently sanctioned by the league for his failure to appear in the 2006 All-Star Game held in Cagayan de Oro City. Through his agent Danny Espiritu, he said he was then suffering from an injury and had to beg off from coming.
Prior to the start of the 2006 Philippine Cup, Caguioa vowed to run naked (or half-naked) along the streets of Shaw Boulevard if the Kings failed to defend the title during a pre-tournament interview with ABC Sports. His team eventually lost the title, but he reneged on his earlier promise.
On May 17, 2006, Caguioa was ejected during Ginebra's 99-88 defeat against sister team Coca-Cola Tigers for two technical fouls. The first technical happened after he vehemently complained a call against Tigers guard John Arigo. The second offense was for throwing the ball into the stands after a foul was called on him. The league suspended Caguioa during their loss against Air21 on May 20.
He was fined by PBA Commissioner Noli Eala for failing to attend the 2006 PBA Annual Awards, where he was included in the Mythical Second team.
Several newspapers wrote an article claiming that Caguioa is hated by the media in relation to his non-inclusion in the individual awards in the past.
It is said that while these controversies produce a bad image for Caguioa, he still ranks as one of the most popular players in the league and is among the most favorite of Ginebra fans. Some also argue that Caguioa is either liked or hated by fans and the media.

Trivia

PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad is his cousin.

He is currently dating Australian/Filipina model Lauren Hudson. [citation needed]
He is scouted by the NBA team Toronto Raptors.
He is offered by Iran basketball team to play for ten million pesos as an import, But he declined the offer.

Ibn Notes:

Carlos Loyzaga

Carlos Loyzaga (born 29 August 1930 in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro) is a former Filipino basketball player and son of Joaquin Loyzaga (former member of the Philippine national football team). He is considered by many to be the greatest Filipino basketball player of all time and will go down in basketball history as the “Big Difference”orthe “Great Difference”of Philippine basketball.

He had the natural ability to turn what seemed to be an impending defeat to victory, thus earning for himself the monicker: The Big Difference, a sobriquet made popular by the incomparable sportscaster Willie Hernandez.

Loyzaga, a two-time Olympian, was a many time member of the Philippine national basketball team in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He steered the national team into one of the best in the world, winning four consecutive Asian Games gold medals and two consecutive FIBA Asia Championships.

He led the Philippine National Team to a Bronze Medal finish in the 1954 FIBA World Championship and was named to the Mythical Team of that tournament. As of the end of 2006, this third place finish remains the highest finish of any Asian team in the history of the tournament.

Career

NCAA and MICAA

At the age of 15, he was discovered by national team head coach Gabriel “Gabby” Fajardo in Sampaloc, Manila and offered him to play for the junior PRATRA team, and from there, he was taken by Felicisimo Fajardo to San Beda College.

He played college basketball for the San Beda College Red Lions and lead the team for two consecutive NCAA championship titles in 1951 and 1952. In 1955, he led San Beda to its third post-war title and earned the right for permanent possession for the Crispolo Zamora Trophy.

From 1954 to 1960, Loyzaga lead the Yco Painters to seven consecutive national titles in the now-defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA).

In 1954, Loyzaga lead the team to a “grand slam” victory by winning the national title, the MICAA and the Challenge to Champions title.

Between 1954 to 1955, he lead Yco to a record 44 consecutive victories before breaking the record the following year, 1956, to an all time record of 49 consecutive victories in MICAA.

National Team
In 1951, he was selected to play for the national team and helped the team to a gold medal finished in the inaugural Asian Games held at New Delhi, India. He went on to win three more Asian Games gold medals (1954, 1958, 1962) and hold the record for the most appearances (24) by a Filipino basketball player in Asian Games.

In 1952, he was selected to represent the country in the Olympic Games and led the country for a 9th place finished. In 1956, he lead the national team to a seventh place finished, its best ever finished in the post-war Olympic Games.

Loyzaga’s finest moment was the 1954 FIBA World Championship when he led the Philippines to a third place finish and captured the bronze medal in the process. It was the best finish by an Asian country and the Philippines have remained the only Asian medallists in the said tournament to date. Loyzaga finished as the tournament’s third best leading scorer (16.4 ppg) and was named in the tournament’s All-Star Mythical Five selection.

In 1959, he again lead the national team to an eighth place finished at the FIBA World Championship in Chile.

In 1960, he lead the national team to captured the first ever Asian Basketball Confederation championship (now known as the FIBA Asia Championship) in Manila, Philippines and was named alongside the Carlos Badion (tournament‘s Most Valuable Player) in the Mythical Five Selection. Later that year, he missed the Olympic Games at Rome, Italy after injuring himself in a softball game.

In 1963, he won his last international tournament after helping the country win its second Asian championship in Taipei, Taiwan. He retired in 1964 following a distinguished 15-year career.

Post-playing career

In 1967, He coached the Philippine national basketball team, that includes Robert Kaworski, Danny Florencio, Jimmy Mariano and Jun Papa Jr., to captured the FIBA Asia Championship (Philippines‘ third Asian Championship title) in Seoul, South Korea.

The following year, 1968, Loyzaga coached the national team to a 13th place finished in the Olympic Games at Mexico City, Mexico.

In 1998, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Asia’s oldest existing professional league, named Loyzaga (1950s) alongside Narciso Bernardo (1960s), Robert Jaworski (1970s), Hector Calma (1980s) and Alvin Patrimonio (1990s) in the Philippine Basketball All-Time Mythical Five of the Century.

The following year, in January 1999, he was inducted alongside some of the Philippines’ greatest basketball players to the National Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was named by the Philippine Sportswriter Association (PSA) as one of the Filipino Athletes of the 20th Century.

In 2005, Loyzaga, now resided in Australia, welcomed and supported the touring PBA Legends Team in Australia in a two-game series. The team includes Loyzaga’s two sons Chito and Joey, as well as superstars Allan Caidic, Alvin Patrimonio, Samboy Lim and Hector Calma.

WELCOAT SERIOUS IN BUILDUP, TAGS BELASCO FOR CABATU

Aljamal to TNT, Lanete to Purefoods

Monday, 20 August 2007

Veteran player Nic Belasco is going to Welcoat, sophomore pro Junjun Cabatu to Alaska and rookie draftee Yousif Aljamal to Talk N Text.

With the 2007 PBA Rookie Draft over, most of the ballclubs have started trying to boost their rosters with Belasco, Cabatu and Aljamal among the players involved in trade deals consummated thus far.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->
Red Bull earlier acquired Mark Andaya for nothing from Air21 while Purefoods signed up rookie free agent Chico Lanete for a two-year contract worth P5 million.

Welcoat is showing great resolve to make an impact in the coming 33rd PBA season, recruiting Belasco from Alaska after picking Joe Devance and Ryan Arana from the Rookie Draft Sunday.

The Dragons, the league whipping boys last campaign, acquired Belasco in exchange for Cabatu. Belasco is a restricted free agent with his previous playing contract with Alaska expiring at the end of the 2006-07 season.

Welcoat and Alaska closed the deal a few minutes before the Draft held at the Market! Market! Activity Center in Taguig.

Welcoat taps Belasco; TnT gets Aljamal

By Nelson Beltran
Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Welcoat continued its team rebuilding, hoping to turn its fortunes around in its second season in the pro league as it recruited reliable veteran forward Nic Belasco from Alaska Milk after picking Joe Devance and Ryan Arana from the Rookie Draft Sunday.

The Dragons, tail-enders on both the All-Filipino and Reinforced conferences last campaign, acquired the signing rights on Belasco in exchange for sophomore center-forward Junjun Cabatu. Belasco is a restricted free agent with his previous playing contract with Alaska expiring at the end of the 2006-07 season.

Meanwhile, Yousif Aljamal is headed for Talk n Text since the Piltel franchise and Air21, even before the draft, agreed on a trade deal involving the services of the San Beda do-it-all star.

Air21 selected Aljamal at No. 8 overall in Sunday’s draft. Talk n Text didn’t have a chance to tab the 6-foot-3 forward since the Phone Pals had given up their 2007 first round pick on a previous trade transaction.

Talk n Text team manager Frankie Lim, in a text message to The STAR, said they’re still working on what to offer in exchange for their acquisition of Aljamal.

Air21 coach Bo Perasol said the team is likely to keep their three other draftees in JC Intal, Doug Kramer and Marvin Cruz.

The three and another rookie hopeful RJ Masbang join the Express as they start their training today at the Xavier Gym in San Juan.

“With the entry of Intal, Kramer and Cruz, we now have nine players in our lineup. (Injured player) Gary David is our 10th man. We’ll look for two other players from the free agent pool,” said Perasol.

Draft aspirants not picked Sunday automatically joined the free agent pool. Among noted players not drafted were guards Khiel Misa, Reed Juntilla and Wynsjohn Te.

Over at Welcoat, more trades may happen in the next few days with the team looking forward to build a competitive lineup for the coming 33rd PBA season.

“For sure, we will improve with the addition of Devance. We’ll be more competitive than last season. But we may be hard-pressed for a championship,” said coach Leo Austria.

Welcoat co-owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que were upbeat in the composition of the team after getting Devance and Arana from the draft.

“Everybody was looking at Devance. But they seemed to overlook Arana. The guy’s a winner,” said Yu of the former La Salle mainstay.

Meanwhile, the PBA Commissioner’s Office has scheduled a pre-season tourney, also featuring a visiting team from South Korea, next month.

Alaska Milk is the defending champion in the pre-season tourney, serving as the appetizer to the coming season which opens Oct. 14 at the Araneta Coliseum.

off Topic , Bong Alvarez looks taller in the height chart compare to his listed height of 6'0 in his PBA Career.

He looks like 6'2 1/2 - 6'3 in that picture maybe he had a shoe advantage at that time.

That is one of the reason that i do not believe in criminal mugshot height chart because they can make a person taller than his barefeet height.

Wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin (real name: Steve Williams) pleaded no contest in November 2002 to a misdemeanor charge of assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute.

The numbers on the wall apparently indicate the metric system used by the Bexar County (Texas) Sheriff's office. Austin is about 6' 3", or 1.93 meters.

Austin is no taller than 6'1 maybe he was wearing some massive shoes to upgrade his height by 2 inches.

Former NBA star Charles Barkley was arrested by Milwaukee police in December 1991 for allegedly punching a man in the face. In June 1992, a jury acquitted him of the assault charge.

The numbers on the wall indicate that Charles Barkley is 6'7 or 2.01 M. We all know Charles is not taller than 6'5 probably 6'4 based on the measurement in the 1992 US Olympics.

SLR Targets Brunei Cup Championship

Sta. Lucia Realtors will target at least the championship in the coming 7th Brunei Cup Basketball Championship. This is in relation with the signing up of Ex-California State University, Fullerton (US-NCAA Division 1) standout Ryan Reyes along with natural shooting guard Anthony Johnson as reinforcement.

Johnson, who led Kansas Cagerz to capture the 2007 USBL championship with an amazing average of 16.4ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.2apg, FGP: 50.3%, 3FGP: 35.7%, FT: 77.0%, boosts more the chances of the team. Johnson was also a former import of PBA's Coca Cola Tigers.

The Realtors also signed another top rookie Melvin Mamaclay and free agent Philip Buttel to complete its roster.

Philippine national team standout Kelly Williams (196-F-82, college: Oakland) will be expected to banner the team after performing well in the last FIBA Asian Championship in Japan. Veterans and former national team members Marlou Aquino and Dennis Espino are also expected to provide additional firepower to the team.

Realtors can probably match up well against any teams in the tournament with Aquino, Espino, Williams, Johnson and Reyes in the starting line-up.

The squad will leave the country on Thursday with the hope of bringing the championship back home.

Other participating teams are RP Harbour Centre National Team, Darwin Airport Resort All-Star, Jordan All-Star, Singapore Slingers and LG Sakers.

RP Harbour Centre National Team beats PBA's Ginebra, Norwood begged off to play in Brunei

by Hector Santos

Philippine Basketball League backed RP Harbour Centre National Team won its tune up game against Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings yesterday at the Greenmeadows Gym.

The win, 77-68, will be a moral boost for the team which will leave today for Brunei to compete in the 7th Brunei Cup (August 25 to September 2).

Christian Coronel (176-G), Joshua Urbiztondo, Jason Castro, Jeffrey Chan, Eric de la Cuesta, Robert Sanz, Beau Belga (196-C), Dennis Daa, Chad Alonzo, Jerwin Gaco, Lawrence Bonus, Nestor David and former pros Allan Salansang and Ato Morano consists the line up the team that will compete in the Brunei joust.

Filipino-American Gabriel Norwood, who last played for the RP team that competed in the FIBA-Asia tournament in Japan, begged off from the tournament but will be available for the coming SEA Games in Thailand.

Norwood's absence will definitely lessen the chances of the squad in the Brunei competition.

Other participating teams in the Brunei tournament are PBA's Sta. Lucia Realtors, Jordan All-Stars, Korean Basketball League's LG Sakers, Darwin Airport Resort All Star and Australia National Basketball League's Singapore Slingers.

ALASKA OWNS RIGHTS ON BIG MAN BONO

No. 1 overall pick Devance signs max 3-yr pact with Welcoat

Friday, 24 August 2007

The Alaska Aces have been in the PBA so long not to know their assignments in the annual Rookie Draft.

The reigning Fiesta Conference champions are on vacation in Los Angeles,
California, and team manager Joaqui Trillo has been comfortable with the thought that negotiations with their draftees can be done smoothly upon their return by the first week of September.

Trillo was not aware a wrong report back home sowed confusion, prompting other teams to entertain hopes they can acquire prized big men Ken Bono and JR Quinahan.

"Officials from other teams called up when they heard news that Alaska has yet to tender an offer on Bono," said Edgar Tan, who represents the former UAAP MVP.

"Akala ko rin wala pa. But Bono has confirmed to me that he has signed a paper with Alaska right on draft day," Tan added.

Air21, a team still looking to shore up its frontline, was the first to inquire on Bono

2007 PBA Steal of the Draft

I think Joselito " Jojo" Duncil is the steal of the 2007 PBA Draft probably one of the best draft in recent years.

We might be seeing another soon to be Mark Caguioa in the PBA. DUncil is probably one of the best athlete in this years Draft Class and he is also a proven Clutch Shooter.

The thing that i like about Duncil is this guy is very coachable and does not have any bad attitude towards the game. He might actually get enough playing time as a Rookie after Larry Fonacier was traded to the San Miguel Beermen a couple of weeks ago.

2009 PBA Mock Draft

FIRST ROUND

1) Welcoat - Japeth Aguilar (6-9 C Western Kentucky/Ateneo). If he does not make it into the NBA, he'll the top pick here. Has size, athletic ability, and shotblocking potential.

2) Coca Cola - Jervy Cruz (6-5 F University of Santo Tomas). Best big man to come out of the UAAP since Benjie Paras and Dennis Espino.

3) Sta. Lucia - Edwin Asoro (6-3 F National University). Terror on the boards and on defense. Also has good body and athleticism. Can he play small forward in the pros?

4) Air21 - Jonathan Fernandez (6-2 G National University). Shades of Renren Ritualo? He has similar game but could be a better defender.

5) Purefoods - Rino Berame (6-7 C University of the Visayas). Surprised scouts when he schooled 2006 UAAP MVP Ken Bono during the Collegiate Champions' League. Has good post moves.

6) Alaska - Eric John Llanto (6-5 F University of San Carlos). Another Cebuano big man who has great rebounding instincts and accurate shooting touch that extends out to the three-point area. Bruiser, has size and heft at his position. Could be a better prospect than a young John Ferriols.

[B]7) Red Bull - Kelvin Dela Pe

New PBA rules applied in pre-season games

People's Journal
September 8, 2007

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has adopted a new set of guidelines -- including a couple of FIBA-inspired rules – that will take effect this 2007-08 season.

Adjustments in the three-point line, hand checking, goal tending, zone measurement and penalty situation are among those approved by the league’s competition committee that will be implemented for the entire PBA pre-season games starting today.

In the event no glitch is encountered in the imposition of the new rules, the league will formally adopt it beginning the 33rd season that begins on Oct. 14.

“The new rules are expected to add more excitement, speed up play and likely increase the scoring in the league,” said PBA Officer-In-Charge Sonny Barrios.

PBA operations director Rickie Santos, a member for the competitions committee, believes the new rules will help improve the players’ defensive acumen.

From its original measure of 20-feet away from the basket, the three-point line has been shortened to 20-feet and patterned after FIBA.

The zone measurement has also been reduced from the PBA restricted area of a rectangle that measures “16' x 18'-10” or 301.44 sq.ft to Fiba’s restricted area measuring 3.6 meters (12 feet) wide at the free throw line and 6 meters wide (19 ft. and 8.25 inches) at the baseline or 298.54 sq.ft as per FIBA standards.

Defensive players meanwhile, will now be whistled for hand checking this time if such contact is deemed by game officials as a tool to impede the progress of the offensive players.

Goal interference and goal tending will also be a thing of the past. Under the new guideline, offensive or defensive player may touch the ball provided it touches the ring.

As for the penalty situation, the new rules will have the number of team fouls committed in the fourth quarter being carried over to overtime, the extra period now having been considered as an extension of the fourth quarter as far as the number of team fouls and the team fouls penalty rule are concerned.

During regulation, a team that commits two fouls under two minutes in any quarter automatically gets into penalty situation, resulting to two free throws for the offended player on the second foul regardless of the number of team fouls.

The last rule on penalty situation was actually approved as early as last year by the same competition committee, but was deferred for this season to give all teams enough time to adjust.

The pre-season games will last for more than two weeks, kicking off with the lone game between Purefoods and Barangay Ginebra today at the San Sebastian College gym in Cavite.

Arwind Santos is one of the best player in the Air 21 Express roster, he quite made a huge impact in his rookie season, averaging 14.03 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.8 BPG in 42 Regular Season games.

He ranked first among rookies in scoring during the Philippine Cup and almost led the Express to a quarterfinals appearance only to fall to the Sta. Lucia Realtors in a knockout match.

That is an amazing performance from last years outstanding rookies that came from the UAAP. He is also a member of the current PBA Mythical 2nd team, which is a sign that he can be the franchise player of Air 21 once that ball hogged Gary David is gone from their lineup

The future looks brighter when we have guys like Jervy Cruz dominating the UAAP with an average of 16 points and 16 rebounds. Jervy is one of the best bigmen prospect since Dennis Espino, Danny Ildefonso and Don Allado of DLSU Green Archers in the 1990's.

Beside some of our players from the South like Gregory Slaughter and 21 yrs.old Rino Berame, they will probably make a huge mark in the national level, collegiate and in the PBL because of their height and potential.

The players today are much better in my opinion as proven by our current national team, which is the best team ever assembled since the 1998 Centennial Team, our players are progressing but the main reason that we cannot win the Gold in Asia is because the international competition is so much better compare to the 1990's where the only powerhouse team in asia beside the Philippines is China and South Korea, now you can see some Middle Eastern team dominating the competition like Lebanon, the champion Iran and Qatar.

KOREAN KT&G SQUAD NIPS WELCOAT

Devance proves worth, scores 35 in pre-season debut

Monday, 10 September 2007

Welcoat may really have found in Joe Devance the right player to build its team around on.

The top draft pick had a spectacular maiden showing with the Dragons although he missed two crucial free throws at endgame, costing them the game against the visiting KT&G team of Korea Monday night at The Arena in San Juan.

The Dragons suffered a 91-94 defeat which won't reflect in their win-loss record in the 2007 PBA pre-season tourney since the Korean team is a mere guest squad set to play five games.

Reinforced by imports Marquin Chandler and Robert Cummings, the Koreans will be up next against the Alaska Aces

Giants send Artadi to Ginebra

BY NOLI CORTEZ

http://www.info.com.ph/~paulrtd/images/welcoat_paul.JPG

GINEBRA has landed a dervish-like spitfire while Air21 has moved closer to forging a concrete deal with the "Living Legend."

With Ginebra’s dreaded backcourt duo of Mark Caguioa and Jay-Jay Helterbrand still in the injury list, the Kings yesterday acquired speedy Paul Artadi from Purefoods in a three-way trade that involved Air21 as the third party.

Artadi will be the fourth playmaker on the squad after Helterbrand, former Most Valuable Player Johnny Abarrientos and rookie Macky Escalona.

A very reliable source said that in return Purefoods got Ginebra’s future second round pick. Another source said Air21 will get Paolo Hubalde, son of former Crispa Redmanizer legend Freddie Hubalde.

A highly-placed source told Malaya the deal has yet to be formalized, but is "good as done." Top officials of the teams involved could not be reached for comment as of press time.

With Artadi gone, Purefoods’ playmaking chores will be split among Roger Yap, rookie Chito Llanete and Noy Castillo, who can also play the 2-guard slot.

In getting Hubalde, indications now point to the Express getting very close to forging a deal with Robert Jaworski to become their coach. Hubalde played with and for Jaworski while they were with Ginebra during the early 90s.

Air21 chairman Bert Lina and president Lito Alvarez, also the Express team manager, were reportedly in a closed-door meeting for the most part of yesterday to discuss the details of Jaworski’s contract.

It was not immediately known how Hubalde can be inserted into the Air21 lineup since the team’s focus is centered on the search for another inside presence to complement rookie Doug Kramer and Ranidel de Ocampo.

"We direly need another big man," Air21 coach Bo Perasol said, pointing to the likes of Purefoods’ Richard Yee and Coca-Cola’s Ervin Sotto.

At the moment, the Express remain rookie-heavy with Kramer, JC Intal, Marvin Cruz, RJ Masbang, Frank Barcellano and Cris Baluyot in the roster. Jeck Chia has also been taken in.

Artadi and Ginebra, meanwhile, got their respective wishes.

It was reportedly Artadi himself who asked Purefoods management to release him. His transfer severs his ties with James Yap, but reunites him with another former University of the East teammate, Ronald Tubid.

In an earlier interview, Ginebra coach Jong Uichico had expressed his interest in Artadi.

"We’re hoping to get him" said Uichico. "He has speed and he can possibly bring in additional excitement."

Artadi’s inclusion gives the defending Philippine Cup champion additional boost since Fil-Am Rafi Reavis is already in the country and is set to practice with the country’s most popular ballclub. Reavis was sidelined by a shoulder injury since last March and was forced to go to the United States for surgery and rehabilitation.

"He’s about 90 percent ready now, but he has yet to join our practice. Only our doctor can tell when he can join the team’s practice," said Uichico.

UNDERMANNED GINEBRA TRIPS TALK N TEXT

Tubid, Salvacion, Macapagal step up for Kings

Friday, 14 September 2007

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s170/Legend_Stopper/TUBID.jpg

Barangay Ginebra, minus five key players, pulled the rug from under Talk N Text, 102-100, in the 2007 PBA Pre-Season Tournament at The Arena in San Juan Wednesday night.

Ginebra got off to a swashbuckling start and watched TNT self-destruct in its fiery chase at endgame as the Kings bounced back from an 87-97 defeat at the hands of the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants in the pre-season event opener four nights ago in Cavite City.

Ronald Tubid, Sunday Salvacion and Mark Macapagal carried much of the load for the Kings with Johnny Abarrientos, Eric Menk and Rafi Reavis sidelined by injuries and Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand still on vacation in the US.

Macapagal made 16 points, including clutch free throws that kept the team afloat down the stretch.

The Pals, who repulsed the Air21 Express, 137-126, Monday, actually had a chance to steal the game while only down by one at 100-101, but Harvey Carey missed a layup with three seconds to go.

After Macapagal made it 102-100 on a split from the foul line, the Pals went to Asi Taulava in their attempt to force overtime but the Fil-Tongan behemoth likewise missed his shot.

Thus, the Kings, the reigning All-Filipino champions, salvaged the game and stayed in the running for the one-game final in this pre-season event won by the Alaska Aces last year.

Ginebra pounced on Talk N Text’s lackluster start and sat on a 29-17 cushion going into the second period.

The Kings sustained their searing drive in the next quarter but the Pals enjoyed some breaks towards the end of the first half, including a shot made by Renren Ritualo from midcourt with three-tenths of a second left in the clock.

Buckling down to work after the halftime huddle, the Pals closed in at 69-76 in the third and put the pressure on in the final canto.

Talk N Text finally caught up at 89-all on a dunk by Taulava, then the team pulled ahead at 92-89 on a trey by Ritualo.

It was a battle to the finish.

Tubid and Salvacion had their clutch plays and led the Kings with 24 and 22 points, respectively. Jimmy Alapag paced the Pals with 19. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 102 – Tubid 24, Salvacion 22, Macapagal 16, Holper 12, Hubalde 9, Santos 9, Mamaril 8, Lao 1, Aquino 1, Escalona 0.

Talk N Text 100 – Alapag 19, Cardona 17, Taulava 16, Washington 15, Ritualo 10, Carey 9, Allado 7, Noble 4, Billones 2, Ferreria 1, Santos 0.

Quarterscores: 29-17, 57-44, 78-69, 102-100.

Harbour Centre
Hapee Toothpaste
Montana Pawnshop

Teams that might return in the PBA

Sunkists Orange Juicers
Shell Turbo Chargers

For me i want the PBA to add more teams in the league so that it would become super competitive. The PBA needed expansion in the next few years, the influx of great players was at a peek, and so the PBA must expanded to other local teams from the South. Anyway, it would be my dream that the PBA would then be a one season league just like the NBA and we can let foreigners play in the league as a locals.

So that they can elevate the game here in the Philippines because we can actually have some great talent that can compete againts the locals.

Rod Nealy, Ginebra's import last conference is one of the main reason the Gin Kings are a consistent rebounding team. Now they should rely on their locals to produce the same quantity of rebound that Nealy produced last PBA Season..

BY NOLI CORTEZ

CROWD-FAVORITE Ginebra will continue trying to shore up its frontline despite drawing blanks on two prospects.

Coach Jong Uichico, however, yesterday admitted there is a distinct possibility the Kings will defend their PBA Philippine Cup crown with no real go-to guy in the post.

"We will try to be competitive, try to make trades to fill up the vacuum," Uichico told Malaya over the phone yesterday. "Pero mukhang puro imposible (through trades) because the player other teams want are those we don’t want to give up. Kaya ang kalalabasan, status quo kami."

Uichico said he has no personal knowledge of any trades being brokered by the Kings, but the likes of Nic Belasco and Don Carlos Allado would have been welcome addition to his team.

"Mula sa point hanggang small forward, kumpleto kami. Pero du’n sa kuwatro (power forward) at singko (center) kami kami malaki ang kulang," he pointed out.

Ginebra tried to trade Mike Holper and Macky Escalona for Belasco, who initially spurned Welcoat’s offer. The Dragons earned the right to the 33-year-old forward in a trade with Alaska for Junjun Cabatu.

Belasco, however, had a change of heart late last week and is likely to come to terms with the Dragons within this week.

Before that, the Kings also tried to pry Allado away from Talk N Text but the Phone Pals reportedly wanted Rafi Reavis in return, leaving the deal dead in the water.

Ginebra management is reportedly bent on pursuing other trade possibilities. There are also talks Kings center Andy Seigle’s contract will not be renewed.

Uichico said it is understandable why Ginebra management is exploring every possibility.

"Lahat halos ng ibang teams nakakuha ng at least isang impact player o role player who can complement their established stars (in the draft). Kami lang ang wala," he pointed out. "So while others can only get better, kami stagnant."

In a way, Uichico knew the trade talks for either Belasco or Allado would fall through.

"All along, alam kong 50-50 lang ang chances na matutuloy. Mahirap kasi na ituloy na one relatively old player at ang kapalit two young guys," he said.

The teams being allowed to carry 14 players in their lineup this season also did not help Ginebra any.

"Kung dose lang sana isang team, siguradong me sosobra sa ibang teams and an easier trade could be brokered. Pero katorse nga ang puwedeng dalhin. The teams can really stack up."

For now, Uichico is concentrating on making the most of what’s on the table. Still, the lack of an agile big man gnaws at him.

"We can still gang rebound, do those outlet passes, run and defend. But we still lack a go-to guy in the post," he said.

Defending PBA preseason champion Alaska notched its first win in two games after holding off Coca Cola, 95-89, Wednesday night.
Tony dela Cruz, who returned to active duty after serving the Philippine team, scored 18 points with reigning Most Valuable Player Willie Miller adding 12 for the Aces. Three others tossed in 10 each to lead the Aces.

Alaska was in control throughout, ending the half with a 48-35 lead.

Rookie Ronjay Buenafe and veteran Mark Telan led the Tigers with 16 each.

Air21 also broke through with a 112-100 demolition of luckless Welcoat after getting 27 points from Arwind Santos and a combined 31 from rookies Doug Kramer and JC Intal.

The Dragons, who won only seven games in their maiden season last year, were led by Joe Devance’s 31 and JR Reyes’ 29.

It was the third straight loss for Welcoat, which is still awaiting the arrival of Nic Belasco from the US.

Yap powers Giants past Phone Pals

MANILA, Philippines -- PUREFOODS encountered rough sailing before blowing away Talk 'N Text in extra time, 111-105, Friday night to seize the solo lead in Group A of the 2007-08 PBA Preseason Tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan.

James Yap bailed the Giants out of trouble by tossing in seven straight points and handed a nifty feed to Jondan Salvador for the insurance basket that neutralized the onslaught of the Phone Pals in overtime.

Though the Giants notched their third win in four games, it was an ugly one considering the chances they wasted in regulation.

For a three-minute stretch in the fourth period, the Phone Pals dissolved an 80-65 Purefoods lead to a single basket following two free throws by Asi Taulava.

Yap ended the drought with a short jumper off the glass before June Peter Simon's three-point play gave the Giants a 92-85 cushion.

Jay Washington knocked in a three in another Talk 'N Text assault as the Phone Pals pulled within 92-94 with 43 ticks remaining.

Yap had the chance to seal the deal in regulation as he drove through the teeth of the Talk 'N Text defense, but Washington swatted away the 2005 MVP's floater.

Jimmy Alapag fetched a foul off a loose ball scramble and then sank two free throws to forge extra period.

The scores:

PUREFOODS 111--J.Yap 29, Simon 14, Raymundo 13, R.Yap 12, Lanete 11, Adducul 7, Pingris 6, Sanz 5, Evangelista 4, Larong 0.

TALK 'N TEXT 105--Taulava 27, Washington 22, Carey 19, Alapag 8, Billones 8, Noble 6, Belano 5, Ritualo 4, Ferreria 2, Fran 2, Cardona 2.

Quarters: 25-17, 45-44, 75-62, 111-105

By Jasmine W. Payo

MANILA, Philippines -- A league rookie takes on a veteran crew when the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) First Conference kicks off on Oct. 20 at The Arena in San Juan City.

Newcomer Pharex and San Mig Coffee (formerly San Miguel-Magnolia) will clash at 2 p.m., followed by the 4 p.m. dispute between Toyota Balintawak and Bacchus Energy Drink on the first day of the season opener.

PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad expects “a wide open race for the championship” since the league loaned several of its stars -- including back-to-back Most Valuable Player Jason Castro -- to the Harbour-RP team set to see action in the Southeast Asian Games.
But more standouts are expected to emerge from the new batch of rookies led by 6-foot-5 Fil-Am guard Gabe Norwood and San Beda College’s John Hermida of Hapee, Ateneo de Manila University center Ford Arao of San Mig Coffee, University of the East’s James Martinez of Bacchus and Jose Rizal University’s James Sena of Toyota Balintawak.

“The endearing exploits of some of the finest collegiate players are expected to spill over in the PBL considering that most of them will see action,” said Trinidad.

According to executive director Butch Maniego, the league will also hold a one-week tournament which will pit the Harbour-RP team against a foreign team and other invited squads.

Aside from missing Castro, three-time champion Harbour Centre will have to do without Beau Belga, Jonathan Fernandez and Chad Alonzo, while newcomer Lina Group of Companies also loaned a prized recruit -- UAAP MVP Jervy Cruz of the University of Santo Tomas -- to the national five.

James Yap is one of my favorite player in the PBA and at age 25 yrs.old, He is probably one of the most successful PBA Player of all time.

Just check his awards, stats and accomplishment in the the 1st 3 years of his proffessional career.

James Yap is lethal in the open court and very dangerous with his jumpshots and devil drives towards the hoop... a cross between Samboy Lim and Allan Caidic... a second MVP award for the Escalante, Negros Occidental native could be in the offing but he must practise consistency and learn to take charge for the Giants.

Cablay goes to Purefoods

By: Rey Joble
People's Journal
October 9, 2007

Versatile guard Brandon Cablay, the small man with a big package, is the newest Giant in Purefoods.

Cablay’s transfer was formalized yesterday after months of speculations.

The 5-11, Fil-Am guard will fill in the void left by Noy Castillo, who injured his toe during the pre-season.

“He was introduced to the team kanina and I think he will play a valuable role for us,” Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio told People’s Tonight. “He’s a versatile player and I think he can help us on both guard spots.”

Cablay was taken in by Purefoods from Red Bull. He was traded to the Bulls in the off season as part of the package in the Larry Fonacier trade.

But with the Bulls already loaded with guards – Cyrus Baguio, Jojo Duncil, Celino Cruz, Topex Robinson and Junthy Valenzuela, Cablay may not shine as a player with a lot of potential.

With Purefoods, Cablay provides the kind of player Gregorio wants to have on his team – flexible, athletic and capable of playing solid on both ends of the court.

Meanwhile, teams in the coming PBA season were presented yesterday at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

Alaska, the Fiesta Cup titlist, parades an intact line-up and a beefier frontline.

San Miguel, already an explosive squad, has added more firepower while sister team Ginebra is expected to become the fastest gun in the tournament with the addition of two spitfires.

But the team out to make a strong, wide signal covering the entire season is Talk N Text.

“They have a deep bench and they have three starters returning in their fold,” Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao said, referring to the three national team members making their comeback this season.

“They managed to enter the championship round last conference even without these three players and now, they have no reason not to be up there.”

The three players Guiao was referring were Asi Taulava, Ren-Ren Ritualo and Jimmy Alapag, who are returning to help the Phone Pals nail the big one.

For Gregorio, the Phone Pals are indeed one of the two super powers aside from San Miguel.

“Definitely, they’re the top two teams in terms of manpower,” said Gregorio, whose team is out to reclaim the Philippine Cup crown. “They are capable of fielding in a strong five even those coming off the bench. But still, it’s not about who comes up with the best five, but which best five fits better.”

Fonacier’s entry coupled by the acquisition of Samigue Eman and Jonas Villanueva from the draft certainly made the Beermen the odds-on pick this season.

Of course, the Gin Kings, with the Fast and the Furious all set to make the season ablaze with their fiery brand of play and the inclusion of Kid Lightning Paul Artadi, will be more fun to watch this season.

The Aces have become bigger and better. Ken Bono and JR Qui

Congratulations to the Magnolia Beverages as they defeat the Air 21 Express 121-112.

Best Player of the Game:

Danny Seigle 28 points, 7 rebounds, 10/16 FG

KG Canaleta lead the Air 21 Express after scoring a career high 32 points. The Magnolia Beverages just dominated the 2nd half as their 3 wingmen lead by Tugade, Fonacier and Seigle are just too much for the Express to handle.

Enrico Villanueva is just a monster of the board and he literally destroyed the 6'5" Ervin Sotto with his 1 on 1 power moves.

Samigue Eman have a very memorable PBA Debut after scoring 5 points and blocking the shot of Arwind Santos in the 2nd quarter, which is one of the highlight of the match up after Santos block him in the early part of the game.

Overall the Magnolia Beverages are one of the best team this conference and they are a much deeper team compare to last years All Filipino Cup.

Arwind Santos also have a very great game i think he score more than 20 points with his outside shoots and some hang time moves like that put back dunk he did in the later part of the game. I still think that the Air 21 Express needs to adjust in the upcoming games because their team chemistry is not yet intact. I predict that once this team jell expect them to make it in the semi finals round of the ALL FILIPINO CUP.

JC Intal, Marvin Cruz and Douglas Kramer contribute in their 1st game but they need to remain consistent the whole time and Cruz needs to stop forcing some stupid shoots, when he can just pass the ball to his open teammates.

SEIGLE, HONTIVEROS SHINE AS MAGNOLIA TAKES OPENER

Faster-paced ballgame leads to highest-scoring season curtainraiser since ‘92

Sunday, 14 October 2007

Dondon Hontiveros picked up his offensive rhythm in the third quarter and the Magnolia Beverage Masters took the cue to mount a second half charge that keyed a 121-112 victory over the Air21 Express Sunday night in the opener of the 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Hontiveros, cold as ice in the first half with only two points, drove the Express crazy in the third that saw him scattering 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the perimeter and 4-of-5 from the stripe.

His explosion practically changed the complication of the game and put an end to the Beverage Masters' three-game losing spell at the hands of the Express last conference.

Hontiveros, who missed the entire 2007 Fiesta Conference along with Danny Seigle to serve the RP Team, finished with 15 points. He tied the game at 67 midway in the third with two free throws, then completed a three-point play 13 seconds later as Magnolia took the lead for good at 70-69.

"The basics are all there but when the going gets tough we can always count on Danny Ildefonso, Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros,” said Magnolia coach Siot Tanquingcen of their second half surge.

"We had to deal with it. We have to play the way the refs call it. Everybody's playing with the same set of rules anyway," offered Tanquingcen when asked to comment on the new rules implemented by the league this season.

The implementation of the new rules quickened the flow of the game, and the big opening day crowd lapped up every moment of the action-packed encounter.

It also opened a lot of offensive opportunities for both teams and the result was a high-scoring curtainraiser that featured a combined 17 triples and 30 fast break attempts and nearly 50 percent shooting from both teams.

The league's highest scoring opener was established in 1992 when Presto defeated Swift, 120-118.

Seigle scored 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting and Enrico Villanueva had 21 points for Magnolia, which had six players scoring in double digits.

Larry Fonacier, Lordy Tugade and Ildefonso each had 11 points for the Beverage Masters who shot 48 percent from the field.

Ervin Sotto pulled the Express within 89-93 early in the fourth quarter but Magnolia quickly countered with a 10-0 run to ripped the game apart.

Air21 actually dictated the tempo in the first half due largely to the 3-point shooting of Nino Canaleta and Aris Dimaunahan, who both went 3-for-4 from the trifecta zone.

Their tireless effort to run the court also paid handsomely for the Express, who enjoyed a 56-52 lead at halftime.

But things turned sour for Air21 in the third quarter as the Express began missing from the field and eventually drowned in a series of turnovers.

Canaleta led all scorers with 32 points and Arwind Santos added 21 points for the Express, who committed 20 turnovers. (DBC)

The scores:

Magnolia 121 - Seigle 28, Villanueva, R. 20, Hontiveros 15, Fonacier 11, Tugade 11, Ildefonso 11, Tenorio 9, Racela 8, Eman 5, Gonzales 3, Wilson 0.

Air21 112 - Canaleta 32, Santos 21, Arboleda 15, Dimaunahan 9, Se 8, Cruz 7, Sotto 6, Intal 5, de Ocampo 4, Kramer 3, Baluyot 2, Chia 0.

Quarters: 25-32, 52-56, 86-81, 121-112.

Great Game for both teams in the start of the conference and It is a come from behind victory for the TJ Giants lead by James Yap, who scored 29 points and help the TJ Giants to beat the Sta. Lucia Realtors after PJ Simon was thrown out in the game after committing 2 technical fouls in the 2nd half.

Overall the Purefoods TJ Giants are one of the most underrated team this conference but they added some nice acquisition like Rookie Robert Franz, Ardy Larong and 5'10" PG Chico Lanete.

Nice game also from Roger Yap who added 16 points and facilitate Purefoods offense since the start of the ball game.
