Much has been made of the arms race between Disney's Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.' DC Comics to create superhero movies through 2020. Less debated is a key financial underpinning of the war: Licensing revenue generates tens of billions of dollars for Hollywood companies, and DC needs a heroic effort to catch Marvel in licensing profits.

On Oct. 15, Warners CEO said that if they can close the current gap by half, the studio could earn an additional $150 million a year in profits. How big is the gap?

In May, License Global placed Disney first among licensors with sales of about $41 billion in 2013; Warners was a distant seventh with $6 billion.

The Licensing Letter listed Marvel's Spider-Man as the most popular with global retail sales at $1.3 billion. No other superhero comes close.

Marvel's The Avengers comes in at $325 million but is considered to have the most growth potential. Compared with DC's Batman at $494 million and Superman at $277 million.

In other words, Spider-Man himself outsells The Avengers, Batman, and Superman combined.

Honestly thought it was going to be either Batman or Superman.

If you're going on the criteria of the most well known, iconic superhero it's Superman.

But the OP's criteria is BO/Licensing numbers which Spidey crushes everyone in.

that does make sense I loved spiderman as a kid mainly because of the cartoons on fox but then again batman was badass as well.

I think spiderman just as way more appeal to all peoples.. i mean batman is an only child/loner/playboy/billionaire while superman is a demi-god alien...

spiderman was just a normal kid going to school until he got into one little fight and his mom got scared

Makes sense it's Spider-man but didn't expect the gap between him and the next superhero to be that huge!

That's domination right there.

I used to think I was spiderman when I was a kid. It seemed more practical and realistic to be him, especially with that toy that shot silly string out like a web. Used to climb the walls. Dressed up as spiderman 9 straight years for Halloween, including this year.

The Hulk is by far the coolest superhero though. It's not even close.

I thought it was going to be Batman since Batman is on a roll in all forms of entertainment medium. He has quality stuff with movies, video games and comic books. TV shows need work, but you still have Batman TAS and Batman Byeond back in the day. The DC animated movies with Batman are usually epic.

Spidy is cool. Make sense too since he is relatable and appeal to all ages.

Anyone have like an image or infographic or something of how everything breaks down. There are so many damn superheroes etc out there now and I'm just confused about what Marvel, DC, Justice League, Avengers etc all even are.

If Spider-Man can be way more popular than Batman with shitty movies compared to TDK trilogy, then imagine how big he can get if he was teaming up with the Avengers or getting solo MCU movies

I was a big fan of Spidey as a little kid watching the Tobey Maguire movies, but once the crap started rolling out, I kind of forgot about him. If he appears in Civil War, it's game over.

The Hulk doesn't do anything except say Hulk Smash. Most overrated monster ever. He's not even a superhero, he just breaks things.

I liked this show as a kid, hated the Maguire movies. The new Spiderman is actually decent, but the CGI and dialogue is so bad, i can't enjoy them either.

It'd be the greatest thing in the world if Marvel could get Spidey's rights back. Those movies would be off the charts amazing. Imagine the end of the Infinity Wars Part 2. Everyone is happy, reminiscing, and then you see Andrew Garfield pop us.

PLEASE SONY. Just sell him.

My big kid (2y10m) loves Spidey, he is shooting spiderwebs and trying to climb walls. He has a costume too.
Also his favourite villain is Green Goblin, with the "skate" and pumpkin fireballs.

For me: 1a)Batman 1b) Wolverine 2) Spidey 3) Iron Man

Really? I would be pissed if he finally showed up after Infinity Wars. Captain America, Thor and maybe even Iron-Man will be gone or dead by then so they'd need Spidey.
