Pakistani security forces killed a commander who helped to plan last week's school attack in Peshawar that left 132 children dead, a government spokesman said Friday. The commander of the Pakistani Taliban's Tariq Gedar group was identified only as "Saddam." He was killed in a gunfight Wednesday in Jamrud, about five miles from where the horrific siege took place, Shahab Ali, a spokesman for Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, told reporters.

Pakistani media refers to him as a "suspected facilitator" (http://www.dawn.com/news/1153459/school-attack-facilitator-killed) in this attack, but apparently had quite a list of crimes in his background.

LANDI KOTAL: Security forces eliminated a suspected facilitator of the Dec 16 attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School in a clash in Khyber Agency’s Jamrud town on Thursday, according to Political Agent Shahab Ali Shah.

He said at a press conference on Friday that the alleged facilitator, Saddam Jan, was a member of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s Tariq Geedarh group.

He was wanted in several cases of terrorism and sabotage, Mr Shah said.

“Saddam Jan was the mastermind of an attack on a polio vaccination team on March 1 this year. Eleven Khasadar personnel were killed in the incident,” Shahab Shah said.

“He also spearheaded an attack on a checkpoint in Hawaldari on July 25 in which three Khasadars were killed.

“Saddam orchestrated the killing of eight personnel of Swat Scouts when their convoy was attacked on July 17,” the official said.

Mr Shah said the intelligence agencies were investigating the militant’s role as a facilitator in the attack on the school in Peshawar.

He was killed and six of his accomplices were arrested after a shootout in Ghundi area when the militants’ group was trying to flee after killing a tribal elder, Badshah Khan.

The official said the arrested militants had been injured in the clash and their involvement in other crimes and their plans were being investigated.
