Yes, there was a story in some magazine about a white kid from rough part of La (I think) who spent all his money on a bus ride there to show what he had in hopes of making it on to a city team. Kid could jump and was quick, but lacked in other areas. He didn't perform well and was given a bad nickname. Was a sad story, as that had been his dream. But he put a good face on it.
