Is there an actual difference in quality between brand name gasoline and generic?

I hear all these things:

Costco only buys the cheapest gas on the market/costco advertises that their gas meets higher standards

76 uses ethanol

Using Chevron cleans out your system

The government requires such high standards for gasoline to be sold that all brands are good quality.

Thinking along the lines of Chevron, Shell, 76, Mobile, Valero etc. vs Costco, Arco(I know they use ethanol), Circle K, Joe's Budget Gas etc.

No, there is not.

yes and no.... there is a difference, most cars won't notice a difference unless it's a true high performance car that requires the good stuff and even then there's good good stuff and better good stuff

here on the West Coast if you have a car that requires the higher octane fuel then you'll use Union 76 or Chevron, even Arco's best won't cut it

Some companies arrive at higher octane numbers via additives where the better fuels are refined to a higher octane

so there is a difference BUT your average car won't know the difference performance

gas selection is minute to a car's longevity.

A WRX on 14 pounds of boost.

most engines tend to run a little bit better on gas that does not contain ethanol, but the difference is so small that you probably wont be able to notice it in most vehicles.

unless u have a high performance vehicle, premium doesn't do shit for you. most people get it thinking they have to but its additives are mainly for high performance motors. google it.

worst case you'll get engine knocking...

Lulz if that's true I wouldn't consider 14psi "boosted as fvck"
Haha i was just joking man, ofc thats not boosted as fvck. I could be tho, buts its a daily driven car.
Take it easy bro, happy holidays.

A WRX on 14 pounds of boost.nice...

was just reading an article where a guy is using modified Subaru heads on a 1930 Ford model A engine on his land speed car

I believe the difference is the additives that each company puts into their mix. The actual crude oil is the same.

Don't confuse octane level and gas brands.

Higher octane is for higher compression engines and/or timing specific in the case of certain computer(ECU etc) design. Using it on normal compression engine will result in a waste of money, and unburnt fuel pushing through the rest of your system, which over time will cause issues.

Brands do not matter either, what matters is what source the gas station gets their fuel from. Not all "Shell" stations buy their fuel from a Shell source refinery. Not all Mobil, BP, Chevron, etc. And even then the difference is negligible. Just stay away from the lowest tiered fuel, and use a fuel system additive with a high ratio of polyether amines(PEA) as often as you need to(all depends on the person/car and usage).

Haven't researched it much, but I typically avoid marathon stations. Someone once told me it's inferior quality gas

I think there's a frequent poster here who actually work at a gas station, we should wait his response
