The team isn't going to move from a bigger market to a smaller market.
That won't happen.

Get a real owner and then we will see what happens.
Might be time to look at a new arena too.

Are they in contract with the city of Atlanta/with the arena? Or the new owner can move them?

Who cares about the owner though? People just aren't tuning in to watch them play and their attendance is in the bottom....It's ATLANTA for crying out loud. The lousy fanbase will most likely force the franchise to move to a different city.

They are the only Playoff team besides Milwaukee that's in the bottom 10 in average attendance...

It's the city breh...

They still are under lease, but it is getting close to time for a new arena.

No chance, especially not with the new football stadium going up. The city is going to pay for $100 million+ worth of renovations to Philips though if the new owners, (when we find them) agree to keep the team in Atlanta.

Fair enough.
Philips needs some updates.

Average attendance is up by about 2,200 fans per game and TV numbers are up by almost 40%. They'll continue to go up if we keep playing well and if we somehow finally get an owner who gives half a shit about the team or the fanbase they'll go up even more.

The NBA isn't moving the Hawks out of a top 10 media market with tons of room for growth. Lots of other teams in worse markets who would be at more risk.

If the Trashers moved from a top 10 media market to Winnipeg (a city of 663,000 people)... why not the Hawks?

You're talking about hockey, a sport which draws about 600,000 viewers for an average first round playoff game where the NBA draws 3.5 million.

Basically nobody watches hockey, so if they can get a bunch of hillbilly canucks to fill the stadium up, they'll do it and take the cash.

The NHL already owned the Coyotes and didn't want to own two teams.

The NHL was low on cash and sold the team for needed capital. But in the long term, not having a team in a big market is not good. So it was robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The NBA had that era with teams moving - Grizzlies to Memphis, Sonics to OKC, Hornets to New Orleans (now Pelicans). The league didn't want more of it - i.e. preventing the Kings from moving to Anaheim or Seattle, preventing the Bucks from moving, etc.

There are a number of problems with attendance for the Hawks, but one is that the owners have not been able to land a star player that attracts people. We have a bunch of very good players that I like, but no big megastar.

Beyond attendance, the league still gets a lot of benefit from having a team in Atlanta.

The original Jets should have never moved to Phoenix in the first place.
