Shumpert is not a good defender, he will not help Cavaliers, Lebron will lose, Kobe is GOAT.:applause: :applause: :applause:

He's better than the corpse of Mike Miller on defense, so he will help :D

What's laughable is you starting a thread about a player that you've obviously never seen play.

We've only had glimpses of what Iman can bring. The problem is he gets banged up too often and wears his heart on his sleeve.

Always liked the kid... I wish him luck.

he is VERY overrated on defense. definitely a 'good' defender tho

Here's my take, based on my observation of Shumpert vs. Waiters guarding the player I watch most:

Wade can torch Shump. On the other hand, Waiters shut Wade down in the second half on Christmas. He's the only player since LeBron left who I've seen make Wade look old. Hell, even with no lift, Wade abuses the vaunted Tony Allen. But, Waiters was ripping him, blocking his shot and just plain stopping him.

So, I see this at best as a lateral move for the Cavs. They get an upgrade at starting SG, but an overrated defender and they lose Waiters' instant offense off the bench (would you really have J.R. Smith as 6th man lmao?). Waiters was on a run for a while and absolutely helped the Cavs win some games. They'd be sub-500 without him.

The Cavs didn't do anything to address their biggest need: the middle. I'd say OKC won this deal, no matter how desperately ESPN is trying to spin it.

Dion is a very talented player and can be a good defender when he puts in the shift but that has been the problem. He has these mood swings which makes him a very unpredictable and frustrating player. When he is on his game, he will put up goo numbers in the offense and do a good job on defense like he did against Wade in the Christmas game. Although I feel a part of it was also down to Wade getting tired. But then there are games like his last two games before he left where he jacks up shots from ridiculous angles and switches off many times on the defense. He was improving his defense but to say, Dion is a better defender than Shumpert is wrong. He didn't show it consistently enough.

Now, Shumpert used to be a very good defender before he tore his ACL in 2012. Since then, he hasn't shown that kind of athleticism or the defense but in spite of all that, he is still a good defender. Does he solve all the defensive problems of the Cavs? No. Is he an elite or very good defender? No. But, he is still a good defender and is a massive upgrade on anyone Cavs have currently except LeBron in terms of the defensive contribution.

As for JR Smith, well, bad case scenario, he will have the same output as Dion has been having till now by shooting around .40 from the field and scoring 10-12 points off the bench but if the Cavs can somehow sort him out and make him the player he was a couple of years ago, when he won the NBA Sixth Man Of The Year, they will getting a really good player coming off the bench to give them some bite. Now, he comes with a lot of baggage and like Dion would make a lot of boneheaded play but even though I don't see how the Cavs lose in all this. BTW, JR Smith is still a better three point shooter than Dion and I read this stat, that he was amongst the top five catch and shoot players in the league from beyond the arc.

Not to mention the first round pick from OKC which would be very handy for them to get a big rim-protector which they desperately need.

They are basically getting three players from Dion's trade, out of which two would definitely improve them in Shumpert and the big which they would get before the trade deadline. So, I don't see how it is a bad trade for the Cavs. Dion was vey talented and Cavs are losing the most talented player in this trade, but he hadn't improved since his first season and was basically the same player as he was a couple of years ago. As complimentary pieces, Shumpert and JR Smith would be better options unlike Dion who wanted to be THE MAN!

Being that he was one of the best perimeter defenders in the league before he tore the ACL you know he has the fundamentals and desire but his body might be fighting him. Its not going to be this year. But its possible he can get it back. You just don't know what inspiration might hit him.

Thats true.

Even if he isn't the Shumpert of 2011-12, he will still be a massive upgrade on anyone Cavs have in terms of defensive contribution.

straight up, rookie year and before all these knee injuries he was a beast on D.

Quick and agile enough to hang with small guards, strong and big enough to take on the taller players, plus his intensity was off the charts....

He's a great defender. He gambles way too much though so that drops him down to just slightly above Lebron's level.
