Nah... How's there ever been a MVP of the league who got bounced by an 8th seed ?

Kobe in 2006 vs the suns is up there as well. But bran takes the cake in 2011.

Kobe was never a true mvp in the league so he wouldn't have this sort of choke jobs.

Not even the worst of THAT Postseason which was Dwyane Wade's choke job getting swept out of the first round.

LeBron's 2011 / Dirk's 2007 indistinguishably, both indiscriminately embarrassing.

Dirks choke in game 3 of the finals the year before was pretty bad too.

Also, remember the spurs losing to the grizz in the first round as a first seed.

I think we should seperate playing like shit and not trying at all (choking)
at least kobe tried, he just played like shit

wow.....ISH keeps surprising me. kobe's 2004 is up there with lebron's 2011 finals as one of the worst by a great player.
Dirk's 2007 was way worse though. he had close to lebron's 2011 numbers while shooting 38.3% and this was in the first round unlike kobe and lebron's performance which were in the finals.

man, "top-25 players" encompasses so many years of ball, it's tough to narrow it down. I'll say that it was definitely one of the worst playoff collapses I've seen live from a player in an MVP season. Dirk had to take some time to himself in the Outback after that, can't really blame him. For such a prolific 3-point shooter to go so cold from beyond the arch (.21%) and in general (.38%) was definitely surprising. And his lack of post game at the time got exposed (he got better though). Josh Howard, who had questionable bball IQ but was an All-Star that season, managed to have a good series but GSW had Dirk locked down

Yup.. LeBron had worse stats getting bounced in 08 and 07 than 2011 but he didn't choke there really.. Just ran into some really great defenses.

Detroit, Boston, San Antonio defense >>> golden state and Dallas by every measure. There's no explanation for playing as subpar as they did against those defenses other than choking.

How about the Kobe's back2back defending champions getting swept in the 2011 playoffs? :confusedshrug:

dirk is top 17-20. gtfo with '25'. no way theres 25 people over Dirk.

in terms of choke jobs, the spurs circle of choke the last few years is at the top.

or rose in 2011 (not a top 200 player tho) . kobe in 04,07,08,10,11

Ginobili was injured and the Grizzlies were injured for the first half of that season. They were probably the greatest 8th seed in history.

If you bring rose up then you gotta bring up kobe in 2011. 0-4 to mavs as a back to back championship team vs mavs. 40 point loss in the closing game.

Dallas vs Golden State was a special case for four reasons:

#1 The 2007 Golden State Warriors made a big trade in January, and after they had some time to gel, they played much better than your average #8 seed. IIRC they had one of the best records after the all star game. So, while they were technically an #8 seed, their actual level of play in the spring of 2007 was much higher than your typical #8 seed.

#2 GSW was a bad matchup for Dallas, they swept their regular season matches.

#3 Don Nelson was a master of gimmicky tactics, and he knew Dirk inside and out.

#4 Avery Johnson was a stubborn idiot who was really bad at making proper adjustments.

So, to sum it up, it was a perfect storm situation.

I get that GSW was a bad matchup for Dallas, but it's not like they were contenders. They got dismantled in the next round by Utah.

Just look at the 2012 Mavs who were missing Chandler.

Then look at Dirk's ring count without him.

Coincidence?

No shit, Duncan is obviously better than Dirk. I was just using that idiot's retarded logic back at him.

I remember thinking that year that if they have to play GSW in the playoffs, they're losing... if they play anyone else, they'll win the championship.

And that Mavs team which swept the Lakers won the title? There is nothing wrong with getting swept or getting bounced as defending champs since you have proven you got what it takes.
