Garbage pail kids

Gremlins

Dark Crystal

Chuckie

The list goes on. Why are 80's puppets so f*cking scary? To this day I get very uncomfortable watching them. It's not jump-scary at all, but the creep factor for me is just off the charts. Anybody else creeped out by the puppet effects in 80's movies?

I'd take puppetry and practical effects over CGI. CGI is so overused these days..it makes movies look like cartoons.

Just watched this for the first time in 20+ years courtesy of your link. WTF were Jim Henson and Frank Oz smoking at the time they made this? This movie is simultaneously brilliant and bewildering, its just completely and utterly weird. The final scene when those slow moving animals come in and merge with the skexis, :wtf:

Oh and you're right it spooks the shit out of kids, my 6 year old daughter caught a little bit of it over my shoulder as I watched it on my laptop. Needless to say she was most unnerved.

i don't know about that... when you're aware that it's a henson movie and have seen your share of fantasy movies, i think it's more creative and refreshing than it is creepy. maybe younger kids shouldn't watch it, but if you're a teenager, especially today, you're surrounded by worlds of creepy stuff anyway, right? :confusedshrug:

90% of 80's movies practical effects are nightmare-fuel

Thorpesaurous
01-12-2015, 11:43 AM
I love practical effects. The editing was better too. They don't look great in gif form now, but they'd cut them at the time so that your imagination did 75% of the work. Now they want to show you everything, and it loses some of the impact.

Dark Crystal is a great movie.

And I posted this the other day in a thread about creepy robots, but this is based some on the Uncanny Valley Theory of humans being creeped out by things that are humanoid but don't move quite as naturally as humans. It accounts for robots, zombies, puppets, the elderly moving quickly, or even the use of things like fish eye lenses or editing tricks to make things move unnaturally.

It's pretty interesting.

interesting theory. like a varient of that feeling when you were almost tricked by an outsider trying to pass themselves off as a 'normal.' this probably goes way way back in our evolution and biology.

so... better to be a genuine outsider than one trying to fit in and failing, maybe.

Someone told me about it after I was a little freaked out by the Direct TV wireless commercials with the marionette family.

I had a huge fear of a ridiculous movie called Dead Dudes In The House as a kid, which featured a decreped old woman in a house terrorizing a bunch of co-eds in a giant house. She would sort of wonder around, then move freakishly fast when she attacked them. That movie scared the hell of me.

he got the money from studios, but how he convinced them to finance him is a good question.

anyway, maybe he got tired of sacrificing money for his art. i'll have to check out his earlier stuff, because his tolkien stuff leaves a lot to be desired, at least for me.

I guess so, anyways, movies you have to see:

Braindead
Bad Taste

You will laugh & vomit at the same time, Peter even stars in those especially in Bad Taste, two sick characters, see the youtube link i posted above for a taste. :)

The other is optional:

Frighteners (pretty good horror imo with Michael J. Fox)
Meet the Feebles (muppets on crack, creepy puppet splatter galore)
Heavinly Creatures (good drama/crime, got 7.5 on imdb)

Dead Alive is one of the greatest horror movies ever. Hardly anyone knows about it. More people know the Re-Animator and From Beyond, but Dead Alive is tops. We used to watch it all the time in high school to freak people.
