I haven't seen enough of the "big" movies yet to care about this. Maybe in a week or two.
Boyhood was excellent though and will deserve almost any win it gets.

The gimmick movie?
Yes. A gimmick that 100% succeeded and turned a standard story into an awesome experience.
Also, Fargo was excellent. If that's what True Detective lost to, that's fine.

Boyhood was solid but I preferred both Birdman and Whiplash to it

Boyhood totally relies on the gimmick. It's not near as effective without it. But it's there and it was incredibly effective at blurring the lines between reality and fiction for me and turning it all into a interesting experience through this kid's life. It's more of a directorial achievement that will hit home with people by relating to similar experiences they might have gone through.
<Mild Spoilers ahead>
There's very little major drama. It has moments where you think it's about to turn into a standard Hollywood drama and it pulls back. Sometimes I almost wished it did go a bit further but it's just not that type of story. Much like the "Before" movies.

is there a link w/ just the award winners/highlights? i don't need to see all the pomp and circumstance.
and yes, boyhood was amazing. maybe a bit overrated from the critics' standpoint (but so wasn't pan's laybrinth)? i digress, it was huge in its scope and it wasn't only from one perspective. anyway, linklater won best director for it.
meh, i liked several wes anderson films more than budapest. if anything, that movie felt super forced and formulaic at times and i dig wes

Boyhood was a terrible movie. The little boy turned into a weird bad actor and the story fell apart and dragged on. The beginning was interesting, but by the time he's starting college, there is no more story and the movie is very dull.

terrible? to each their own but idk. weird bad actor? thought he played the aloof guy pretty well. just cuz he doesn't give you answers on every turn doesn't make him a bad actor. the ending was open ended. i don't think they could have put that in a nice bow tie. arquette played an amazing role. the story had its ups and downs. it didn't try to overindulge and at the same time, it didn't try to hide the hard realities of life. had no real problem w/ the acting especially since so much was on kid acting which can be so hit or miss.

I'm sure Boyhood is done well, but the commercials look boring. What is the story other than the gimmick of following them over 12 years?

It seemed like the main actor wrote his own lines for the majority of the movie. Near then end of the film he starts talking to his dad about the meaning of life, like some delusional self righteous stoner talk. I really enjoyed the first half of the movie and thought it was good, but then the second half just had an unmotivated photographer as a main character with nothing interesting going on in his life.

I loved Boyhood for what it tried to do, but I did find most of my interest in it tied to it's process. I wondered during the movie how much of the script was written on how the boy grew up in real life. Like they played the boy into this artsy guy, but what if the kid in real life turned out to be some strapping athlete. They had set that up with the father as rock band vagabond early on, so what if it didn't play. I'm sure they had an idea of how the kid would grow physically, but it occurred to me quite a bit as I was watching.
I found most of the characters sort of unlikable right off the bat, but because of the scope of time we dealt with them, I wound up really accepting of all of them.
In the end I loved it, but it was a different experience of loving than anything else I can think of. If I were voting I probably would've put Birdman and Whiplash ahead of it, but I have no problem with it.

Best part of the Golden Globes was watching Kate Mara. I don't know what it is about her. She's not bombshell pretty, but she has that vibe about her like she knows how to get nasty.

I like both of them a lot, and neither is of the traditionally stunning mold. Kate Mara usually plays cuter, and then when she shows off like that it's like cute girl gone glam at a wedding or something, and it's pretty eye popping.
Jessica Chastain was the one I liked most watching in and out of it too. And she usually plays pretty salt of the earth. So when she gets done up like this it really can be pretty stunning. She's got a much better body than she usually shows off.
