Who would've thought these nikkas would become the #1 ranked defense (http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/team/_/stat/defense-per-game/sort/avgPointsOpponent) by adding Chris Kaman and Steve Blake? :biggums:

What are they doing differently this year?

Doesn't explain how they jumped 20 spots in defensive rankings in one season :wtf:

Chemistry, eye test, intangibles, things you cannot see by reading box score

Steve Blake is an underrated defender. I loved the guys effort when he played for the Lakers. Portland has a pretty good squad that's hard for me to dislike. The only person I don't care for too much is Kaman. Lillard and Aldridge are top grade.

AND they were without Batum and Lamarcus for a bunch of games too and those two are among the best defenders in this team. Overall the explanation is simple....everyone has improved. Hell Lillard is miles above how he was defensively this year, he took the off season and just worked on it and bam. Even players like Crabbe and TRob has been very very good on defense

All in all I love this team. A well balanced and constantly improving one with great team chemistry

Has Lillard improved defensively? TBH the only time I watched them was when they played Orlando yesterday.

A huge leap..no joke. I think he focused on defense and finishing at the rim this off season and he has made incredible strides on both fronts

Terry Stotts is one of the best coaches in the league. The Blazers have improved significantly every year under him.

Doesn't really surprise that their defense is elite now. They have Matthews, Batum, and Lopez, who are all great defenders. Even Lillard and LMA have improved to the point of being serviceable on defense.

I always knew our defense was good because of the flashes they showed last season.

Aldridge was a DPOY in college. He's a really solid defender but coasts until the 4th so people think he doesn't care. Watch how many strips he gets every game. He has Karl Malone hands.

Lopez, Batum, Matthews. We already know about them

And then there is Damian Lillard. I never thought he'd become this good on defense. The lateral quickness there. He is just quicker, he's smarter. He gets his damn hands up to contest shots. He fights around screens. Picks up offensive fouls on the screener. He's been huge this year. Big time defensive leap.
