I'm also surprised Nadal hasn't won an Aussie Open, being that it's the first Major of the season, and he's typically healthy.

nadal has one ao title .. but yeah he's been struggling badly .. body breaking down on him .. I'd be surprised if he wins this one but you never know .. he could catch fire ..
I don't know about 2012 .. that was pretty much up for grabs between djokovic and nadal .. could've gone either way .. but I think 2014 was his if not for his back

Great start for Rafa. Youzhny wasn't the toughest opponent but Rafa definitely looks to be in way better form than in Doha. Didn't like his chances before the tournament but I might have to rethink that. Looks like vintage Rafa.

Well, he has won one in '09, which ironically was the start to his wave of injuries... Mainly the long, enduring consecutive 5 hour matches to win it while grinding it out at the baseline.
Very satisfied with the easy win over Youzhny :applause:

Rafa exhausted and keeps fighting through it... won't throw in the towel. Countless of other players would have given up already, sooner or later. But damn.. this is a tough 5th set. Hope he can come through, looks alot slower now, but things might look different in a couple of days.. he usually works himself up to grand slam champion level throughout the tournament.

Freakin Nadal... took him 5 sets to win. I can't watch because it's in the middle of the night for me, but when I woke up to check the score I was shocked. Hopefully this is his usual fight in the early rounds and he heats up after it. He's been taken to 5 sets against no names before and romped through.
At this point, we all know he is susceptible to being upset by hard hitters in early rounds. Let's get him to the 2nd week.

Reportedly he had the stomach flu. Think he threw up between sets 3 and 4 iirc. Dude looked OK to start the match but progressively began getting paler and paler and sweating profusely, looked like he was gonna pass out at one point before he got medication. Ugly match and shit circumstances, but he is seriously the mentally toughest tennis player I've ever seen, probably all time arguably with Borg. Great players really do find a way.
Still don't think he's a favorite like Nole and Fed, but I also don't think we should write him off just yet. He looked great against Youzhny and he was clearly not well against Smyczek..so if anything I think we should go by his 1st round form. Also it's great to hit these extra shots and get tested early rather than later, even if it was because he was sick..he'll be fine imo. He's just lucky his draw is comically easy, if his opponent last round was just 1% better he would've lost...a top 20 player would've raped him.

Why are there so many Rafa fans? I didn't realize there were so many fans of moonballing on here. I never found a player running, playing defense the whole time, waiting for errors, and occasionally hitting a winner fun to watch.
Makes you wonder how much a better player like Agassi would have won in this era of slow courts.

I don't get it either. People just like his hustle I guess. Don't get me wrong, I like to see some long rallies as well... but I also prefer a match with more winners than unforced errors. I don't want to see a match won because one guy was simply willing and able to run more.
It's funny you mention Agassi, because the slowing of the balls and courts really began in the late 90's, in response to the serving dominance of Sampras.

Probably because Rafa isn't a moonballer. That is the type of generalization made by someone who doesn't watch the game.

I thought it was interesting the other night when Brad Gilbert said he thinks Nadal actually has the best volley on tour, because of his ability to convert such a high % on so few attempts. I don't agree with Brad, but it's a testament to just how good Nadal is. Brad also thinks Nadal has the best overhead shot on tour as well, something I've never really attempted to evaluate. I think Nadal really took his game to an all-time level when he improved his serve though.

I've met Nadal, and had a chance to talk to him. Great guy.
The way he plays and wins tennis matches though, is largely predicated on the courts being slower. Being in the non dominant position for most rallies, and top spinning shots back a meter and a half over the net while waiting for your opponent to make a mistake is the definition of moon balling.
It is effective, but it is boring.
Where is the trolling exactly asswipe?

No, that is not the definition of "moon balling". Nadal hits some of the heaviest shots on tour, and with Fed's decline his forehand is without question the best shot in tennis at the moment, imo. Players both current and past have raved about how incredible a shot it is. He dictates points regularly and bullies people around the court as much as any baseliner on tour.
Honestly if you think Nadal just runs around hitting weak ass moon balls and playing purely defensive, you haven't watched him in years.

To Federer, I think its amazing, really...
The last 2-3 years for Federer seemed to go like this:
Looks awesome, gets better, wins a Masters, beats a Djoker/Nadal, people say he's back in contention for the Majors, loses early at the Major.... repeat x12
Like, how does he lose so early after looking good for so many months on the tour in between slams?! What happens every time the Grand Slam kicks off?!

I don't know why people keep killing themselves with these unfair expectations for Roger...just because he does well in smaller tournaments doesn't mean it'll carry over to slams..high intensity best of 5s are a completely different animal, and winning 7 in a row is insanely tough for anyone, let alone 33-34 year olds nearing retirement. Like another poster said, the mere fact that he's competing at a high level is a bonus

I've accepted that now, but man, cmon, even you just said you had him as one of the favorites "Still don't think he's (Rafa) a favorite like Nole and Fed"... quite a contradiction.
He looked really good the last months of last year, and in fact alot of Federer fans believed he had a chance of winning, too (at least competing).

Loose terminology. I had Fed pegged as a "favorite" along with Djokovic and Wawrinka, that his chances were good, moreso because of Murray's inconsistency and Nadal's lack of match prep and very likely early exit. Don't think saying his chances are good is the same as expecting him to win it. If Nadal/Murray were at their normal level I would've given Fed near no shot to win it. As it stood before this loss, I did think he was capable. Just not nearly enough to expect a trophy.

Nadal is not a moon baller and he is strong as a beast, his shots are strong and precise too. His game is boring though, I liked it when he emerged as a contender and started consistently upsetting Roger but his style is just too conservative for my taste.

With how open the field is beyond Djokovic, healthy Nadal, Wawrinka when he's in the zone, and in-form Murray, it really doesn't mean anything. He just has a better chance than most of the top guys, hence he's one of the favorites essentially by default. But I'd still expect him to soundly get his ass kicked by Djokovic if he met him in the final or Nadal in the semi if Nadal was in the form to get there.

Outside of clay courts, he really hasn't been that great, besides his hay day back in 08-10. He has won just once since 2010 outside of the French in grand slams.

and it's not nadal's problem that federer can't figure him out on clay .. nadal had no problem figuring out federer on hard courts .. 8-2 outdoors .. a goat would have figured nadal out on clay .. sorry but you're making yourself look like an idiot trying to downplay his greatness .. 14 slams is ridiculous and in GOAT company .. and he has the career grand slam which is extremely hard and rare to accomplish(he's one of only 4 men to do it) .. you got shit all over your face

Man, I wish he would have won that close 3rd set tiebreak.. perhaps could have mounted an epic comeback (2-6, 0-6? wtf). Berdych is playing the best tennis of his career, a buddy told me this before the match and I didn't even know..

I almost thought he was going to pull off that 3rd set .. thought berdych would choke it away .. you know the momentum would've swung if he would have .. it was 5-1 .. then suddenly 5-4 in the tiebreaker .. he was so close but he dug himself a hole just a bit too deep and berdych's serve was just just enough

Ripping their shirts off after a big win? Which one of the other guys have done something to that magnitude showing up the other guy? Federer has told someone in the box to shut up, but even he keeps it classy. You don't tell a whole stadium to suck your dick, when you're playing "a gentleman's game" no matter how much they are rooting against you. I see the same shit from the 19 year old Aussie, but his excuse is he's a teenager.

Historically, I agree. However, with how physical the game has become, it seems like the average prime for men has shifted from the early-mid 20's, towards the mid-late 20's. Just look at the age of the top 10 players in the World currently. You see the same thing in the ladies game. When's the last time there was a teenager in the top 10 (honest question)? Most of the top women on tour are mid-20's and physically mature. Monica Seles won her first Major at the age of 16.

good points, yes yes. diet, training and sports medicine have come a long way.
i remember stories of top players staying out late, downing a bunch of beers and shots, etc etc on nights before big matches. AFAIK the only modern guy who thought he could get away with that was ernests gulbis, and even he realised his foolishness in the end.
even so, rafa's game puts a tremendous strain on his body. his tendency to get injured and need long layoffs is probably not going to get any better as he turns 30. nothing against the guy, he's obviously one of the greats, but his fans should probably be thankful for what he's accomplished and not get to hung up on how much he wins or doesn't in future.

Nadal is so cursed down in Australia  His last 2 losses are to 2 guys he has owned in the past. I think Stan was goating anyway, but I remember Nadal hadn't even dropped a set to him ever before last year's final and Berdych hadn't beat him since 2006.
His playing style means his days are numbered. I know he wants to continue playing, but I don't wanna see him go on if he is getting hurt in majors and losing to his pigeons.
He can get past it at the French Open since he is Clay GOAT even on his way down, but he is ripe for pickings every where else.
Definitely rooting for the Muzza-Berdych winner. Maybe Berdych has gotten past his demons of wilting under pressure, but I don't have faith in him against Djoko as much as I have in Muzza.

I don't hate Djoker at all. Like I said, he is an all time great player who managed to solve Rafa unlike anyone else especially in 2011. I don't root against him, I just happen to like Murray more. There are lots of Federer fans who watch every single Nadal match hoping for serious injury or embarrassment because of all the anguish that he's caused them by beating Federer over and over. That is not how I feel about Djoker. I would never get upset about Djoker winning a slam unless he did it beating Nadal, because I believe Djoker belongs up there.
I just don't agree with your assessment that he is such a nice guy and no one should dislike him. He has had his run ins with Fed.
Murray has been to plenty of finals and has come up short so often, especially at the Australian Open. Hoping for a good match

So 2 inches makes the difference for you?
6'2" is normal. 6'4" is a freak?
Shaq(7'2") is normal, and Andre the Giant (7'4") was freakish.

Mayweather is only 5' 8"
She also has heels on. 6' 5" or above is what I considered as freakish for female, someone I stop and stare at for a few secs.
normal female height is like 5'4 so 6'2 is 10 f*cking inches over the average..
thats like saying lebron is not freakishly tall in a middle of a concert with normal people

it does for sure .. but past a certain point, it's actually a hinderance or at the least neutralizes any advantage .. that's why you never see any guys past 6'3" winning slams .. always pretty much 6' - 6'3" and some slightly under 6' ..
same for women .. 6'2" is just at that limit of not being an advantage anymore ..
sereno's height is pretty much ideal

please .. sereno becomes average without his serve .. the thing is that the quality of women's tennis blows .. there's no way that a 33 yr old should be ranked this high in women's tennis .. 33 is ancient in tennis .. it's laughable .. she could still be competitive and such but still having this deathgrip on other players at age 33 ? .. it's ridiculous .. and pam shriver even insinuating that she has a chance at a calendar slam .. a 33 yr old .. what a joke lol .. it just speaks of the lack of quality in women's tennis and her ped use .. weak as hell era for women's tennis

Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer are all shorter than Sharapova...and these are men. If height was such huge advantage, wouldn't the norm be that they'd be really tall guys? 6'1" isn't that much taller than what the average American male is.

exactly .. something is up .. no way a 33 yr old tennis player should have this kind of deathgrip on other players .. be competitive, still challenge and be a threat once in a while ? sure .. but this is not normal .. this is like the equivalent of kobe dominating the league at the age of 39 or something like that .. it's unheard of and will never happen for a reason .. players routinely retired at 30 or even younger because their bodies were just not up to it anymore .. graf retired at 30 I believe .. going pro at 13-14 and by the time you're 30 you're just done .. burnout and your body is just done .. yet we have a 33 yr old here who's been on the tour for almost 20 yrs now and seemingly still playing with no end in sight and still at the top of her game ? lol .. it's a joke .. sereno is still human .. she's definitely getting 'help' .. that coupled with the shit quality of women's players is why this is happening

Sharapova beats her opponents usually because she is bigger than most of the 5"6" and under female tennis players.
Now when she plays 1 player that is stronger than her, she's a poor little flower that is beaten because the other player has an unfair and perhaps illegal advantage

Sharapova just overpowered Genie in the match before. She is literally a bigger version of Genie. I don't like Sharapova but she dominates everyone because of how strong she is, well outside of Serena. So I'm happy Serena is able to neuter her everytime they play, can't stand the shrieking. He could get close to anyone. And IMO he's wasted a few opportunities at slams from 2012-2014. But he might just win 3 once again this year (minus the French).

way to suck up the two on-court injuries and finish like a boss, nole. this is your house!
meanwhile, i see no problem with mauresmo in any way shape or form. it's a new partnership, and murray was already in a slumpish year before they connected. if anything, she gets some credit for helping him return to form.
either way, both these guys are deep in their primes and have a small roster of coaches and trainers. the idea that a becker or a mauresmo is making some fundamental difference is just silly.
in their own words, the reasons players at this level bring in a new head coach is generally to clear some stale air, bring in a different POV, make a little bit of adjustment here and there... that's pretty much it.
