I think the difference is that he is playing a bit less and the way the offense works the threes he is taking are a bit different than prior years.

In prior years he had the ball in his hand and used picks and rolls etc, so there were a decent amount of times that he actually had a bit more threes off that. It's easier to get into a shooting flow with that sort of offense for him.

Nowadays, the ball moves around a lot more so his threes come from a weird variety of spots and places. It simply means that he just isn't as comfortable.

When you are hot + his skills and you have an offense that is predicated on you dribbling and doing everything (aka Mark Jackson offense) then it benefits that player.

In this current offense it doesn't benefit him, but definitely benefits the entire team. Nowadays, when he is hot, he still doesn't just reel off 3 or 4 in a row etc. They still run their offense.

Primary ball handlers without options(on a play by play basis that accounts for defense and broken plays) take more bad shots. That's just the nature of the game. Steph is such a good shooter, if he had the same looks that Klay gets, his 3P% could lead the league.
